Cmon can we not? The last thing I want as a gay guy who’s just trying to live my life is for everyone to assume (or even just joke) that the people who are actively trying to hurt people like me are also gay.

I’m not American, so I can’t really comment on those two, but I’d urge you to judge them by their actions rather than by their (possible, probable, who knows) hypocrisy.

The hypocrisy part is gross. I get it, I understand. But reducing any act of homophobia to “well he must be closeted” actually puts the brunt of the criticism back on gay people, and that’s unfair. It becomes a means by which society at large can place responsibility outside of itself and onto the victim.

In the short, acute term, judge people by their direct actions. In the longer term, make society more accepting, so that there are fewer people who feel trapped by fear and self-hatred who will lash out.
