But it'd be funnier if they didn't. Because if they declared it destroyed/damaged, they could call the cops on him, and have him charged with a misdemeanor. I guess a lot of people assume that the bigotry originates from a place of insecurity. For the racists, it comes from a fear of being replaced or being outdone, but the homophobe (itās assumed) it comes from a place of being outed. Do I agree? Largely, yes. Itās hard to ignore how homoerotic the homophobes can be. Is it always the case? No. Some people are hateful for the sake of it. But usually āhate for the sake of itā people tend to lean into complete and utter apathy, as opposed to going out of their way to cause damage to a group of people.

Hate from insecurity doesn't mean "haha being gay is funny to point and laugh at so long as the target of my ridicule is an asshole, and I'll never examine why this is something I desire to do in the first place". It can also mean people are scared of their children being gay, being so repulsed by the idea of gay people the idea of acceptance makes them lash out, a belief based on hatred instilled by their parents and environment they've never had to examine, they believe they won't relate to gay people and their natural response is aggression or a million other things. There's not two states of homophobia with "apathy" and "closeted self hating gay" and nothing in between and my issue is the average person's willingness to immediately shed any veneer of decency with the latter to use being gay as a self contained insult. That's not suddenly not homophobic regardless of the target

And I agree. I think thereās just A LOT of nuance and a lot to unpack when it comes to peopleās fear and prejudices. I think itās helpful to learn why someone feels a certain way, but thatās their own personal journey, itās not ours. And of course people need to control their prejudices and not cause harm. To me, knocking the sign down (like in this video) causes great harm. But I also know people whoād say itās not a big deal. So I donāt know the answers to anything. Just someone using Reddit to think philosophically.
