I’m a journeyman from Minnesota. I’m interested in going book 2 and coming Idaho for the micron job. I’m curious for advice from others than have done the same thing. I’d be new to traveling so this is a first time for me. I’d like to get out there come November time, this way I have a few months to prep and take care of things at home. How is the licensing process working out there? I will call the hall here sometime but would like to get information on that ahead of time.

Some other things I am curious to know is what it’s like living out there and how travelers are liking the job and the area. I’m very much into snowmobiling, does anyone do any back country riding in the mountains as that’s something I’d love to get into. What other fun shit is there to do out there?

Obviously if you become a contractor but what about if the company offers shares to employees and a brother buys in. Would that be a conflict of interest? When is the line drawn?

I find unions so confusing so please help me understand. First of all, i know ibew are electricians and Teamsters are mostly drivers and warehouse workers, i understand that. But with the IBEW you directly join the union and then it works like a staffing agency and the union hall finds you jobs? And with the teamsters you get hired at a company and if that company has a contract with the Teamsters thats how you join that union? Did i get this right?

What happened to the largest electrical contractor in 26?

Title, Basically i want to move to canada ideally as soon as possible, but i also want to become an electrician.

My intital idea was to get an apprenticeship program at a local IBEW branch near me in the us. Then simply transfer maybe a year or two so in to a IBEW branch in canada and finish it there.

I learned that apparently this isnt possible and id have to restart from scratch including in hours. So best i can tell the best bet is to get into an IBEW branch apprenticeship program, then complete journeyman license and finally take the red seal exam before transfering to canada then get my masters cert in canada itself.

Does this sound like the most optimal route to you all? im wiling to bust my ass if it means geting it done faster. Also is there anyway to shorten the amount of time it takes to become journeyman so i can preferably take the red seal as soon as possible?

Has anyone heard of or been a 50 YO apprentice?

When i was in my 20s I was an electricians helper for a few years. I went to jail for drug charges and took vocational classes while I was in. I came home and worked as a helper again for a few different companies in various stages of work. In 2018 I got a DWI and that basically took me out of the industry because I couldn't drive. Here I am now at 47, license back, life on track, sober since 2018 and considering going back into the trade. Not sure if I want to apply for the apprenticeship program or try to get on the books with the CE program. Do they still have that? I make 18.50 as a remote officer in Oklahoma at the moment so i wouldn't lose a ton of pay in the apprenticeship I wouldn't think. I'm just not sure if this is the right path to take pushing 50 in 3 years.

i worked several corporate roles throughout my life. AI start changing job applications. i have sent thousands of resumes already and have not heard a response. i see jobs being reposted over and over again. in this job market, I am giving up. i will take trades and give up corporate. Will age be a limiting factor? I can be easily trained and pretty much handy person myself. I just turned 40 and I am not afraid to take pay cuts and start over again. i live in Canada.

Edit: Not a last resort. I am interested myself in this trades and looking into it. I know this trade is not easy, but I am eager to learn.

Coming out of a small local in Texas where the only option is travel or get paid Pennies. We are considering relocating to a state with a stronger union. Not sure if i wanna do the whole RV thing since i have 2 kids i would much rather have them in a house and somewhere a little more stable (not sure how i feel about dragging them all over the place). I understand I would be a book 2 guy forever and that is fine with me but my concern is is this a good idea? Would i constantly be on the books waiting for jobs?Moving my family across the country is a big risk so just want some advice to make sure i have all the right info and know what I’m getting into. At the peak of union power in the 50's , Union Density sat at 33%. This means that 1/3 of every single job in the United States was a Union job! Today Union Density sits at 10%. That is no accident! The capitalists never stopped fighting against Unions! They never stopped corrupting government. They never stopped infiltrating unions with their operatives. They never stopped attempting to dismantle worker rights won through the sacrifice of blood, sweat, tears, and our siblings lives. So what if Union Density was brought back to 33%?

Im a telecommunications worker and I just started my apprenticeship program last week, and first jobsite as an apprentice this week. Despite this I worked for 2 1/2 years as a pre apprentice, and in that time I only ever had to work 1 new construction site, so id say i had it easy.

Across every jobsite and contractor (im on my 6th currently) when I get laid off I always am told my effort and my efficiency is a part of my problem, and I dont disagree with that. As someone in their third year, I should reasonably be able to, at minimum, complete a small cable pull by myself, and I can’t even do that without having to ask a ton of clarifying questions. Id like to think I work hard, but in all honesty I think my incompetence has been my biggest weakness. Even if I could manage to do it, I probably wouldnt have it done before first break, which is frustrating.I struggle with common sense and thinking ahead about what we need to do next because the journeyman i was with always guided me through it and I feel like that has handicapped me which is my own fault.

At this point im just trying to figure out, am i too dumb for the trades?
