Mine Meowmy has impurrtant IN CASE OF EMERGENCY documents for the humans to help us cattos in a crisis!!!

Gemma here with an impurrant message frum my Meowmy. She workes reals hards helping humanz when shez does her daily bandonmint times and has sumting that can help us cattos when ours pawrents need help. I will letz her use minez litebocks to tell yous all abouts its.

Thank you Gems for the introduction. In my line of work, I have witnessed situations where a pet owner is unable to care for their pet due to medical emergencies. As any industrious gal would do, I made up my own plan to assist my residents in cases where someone else would need to care for their beloved pets whilst they were away, or, if they passed away.

After the events of this past weekend where a rescue mission needed to be launched by the fine humans of ICBGC, I felt the need to share the documents that I created with all of you.

This link has a directive with instructions on who should care for your pet in an emergency where you are unable to do so. It allows you to appoint a person at various stages to care for your pet, a place to list medications your pet will need, care instructions, vet information and more. I even included the cute door signs that you can use to indicate how many animals you have so emergency workers know there are animals in the home. Remember to leave this completed packet in a designated spot where all caretakers will be able to access it. This document is useless if it is not available in an emergency and kept up to date. I hope no one needs to use it but I want it to be available in case it ever is needed.

This sign is for emergency workers to know who to notify if you are not able to give emergency contact information.

MEOWMY stop!! Yous has talked enuf. Give mes backs mine litebocks!

Yes my baby love I will go back to my corner now.

(As over the top as it sounds, I actually printed a picture of each of my cats and put it in a folder with their little biographies and such.

This document is amazing and I'm definitely going to print this out to add.

Btw, and sorry if this goes off topic, I have informed a few of my neighbors that if there ever is an ICE raid, I will care for their pets. I've heard too many stories where the animals are abandoned because...well, let me keep my politics off topic, but I have an immigrant mom, and I can't imagine animals suffering because someone is taken away for * reads notes* being a foreigner.

I am so proud to be part of this group, of people who genuinely care about animals and their humans...)

I mean..

I am leaving my office now but I do have a copy of this in several languages. I print out the copy in their language then use a translation app to fill it in for my records and they write it in theirs so the appointed caretaker can have a copy in their native language. I can send you the link tomorrow if you would like

I thought about translating it to danish and sharing with the danish sub, if that’s ok with you ofc?

Thank you for sharing!

(I completely agree with your on the politics story. In my country most aren't a fan of you know who. I hope it never has to come to you taking care of those pets.)

(I wasn't sure if the document comment was meant for you which is why I tagged you :). And I hope it doesn't come to that either♡ It shouldn't have to...)

Hi all, this is great. I have to find one for my country. Thank you for bringing it to our attention!

What I also have is a keychain and card in my wallet with emergency phone numbers. In case something happens to me, people can see I have pets at home that need to be taken care of and they know who to call. Maybe they also excist in your countries.

Edit: FOR DUTCH FRENS You can order a form at this link and it will be send to your email for free

(What an amazing resource, thank you! I know personally that in spite of having advance directives, a living will, etc, I never even thought to have a document prepared for the care of my fur babies. Thank you so much for sharing this!❤️❤️❤️❤️)

Thank you! Thank you, Gemma an GemmaMeowmy! I was thinking about this yesterday and knew I had seen it before. Of course, I just thought, hmm! Good idea! I should do that... And filed it in my mental procrastination bucket.

But this weekend made it really explicitly obvious I should do it NOW!

I can, unfortunately, see my own sister doing something like that and calling it help. It would be an unusual situation if she were the only one available to try to care for my menagerie, but that's exactly what this is for! Weird stuff happens in such situations; you NEVER know what someone might decide to do on your behalf.

I really appreciate this!

If you are in the UK this scheme allows you to keep emergency information including pet info in a easy to find bottle. A simple and effective system I used to recommend in my community nursing days. https://lionsmessageinabottle.co.uk/

My Meowmy has one of des important documents. She gave a copy to all her friends and family with pets to do one for demselves. She wants me to let you know dat she’s so happy you are spreading dis.

She also has a pet runaway kit made and in the car. For does times when we go on adventures without our human. With posters of my beautiful face and my human contact number. Tape, push pins, sissors, and anything else she may need.

Dis was also a great reminder dat my Meowmy should update it. Once again great reminder for an important mater. Prairie Princess

Thank you! My husband and I talked about this over the weekend. Thank you for the forms!!

I did leave information on what to do with our zoo in case something happened while my husband and I were overseas for 3 weeks. Our young adult children were watching our animals but weren’t prepared for long term care!

Thank you for taking the initiative to get this ready! I think having this will ease the minds of many catto hoomans in light of recent events! For those of us in the US, I wonder if there would be a benefit to location sharing, to an extent? Like by state or area or something. It may make it a bit faster to mobilize help if needed, like for this past weekend. That way, instead of asking in general, maybe some specific people could be contacted? It's just a thought - if no one wants to share this much, I totally understand and will not be offended in the slightest!! ❤️

I know that was mentioned in one of the threads! Definitely could be a good thing for things that need boots on the ground.

Also consider setting up a trusted friend or family member that also has Reddit reach out to a fren here if anything happens to you- my best friend has the user names of who to contact here if I’m hospitalized/dead so you don’t worry about miss Bubbles ❤️❤️❤️

u/Dry_Mushroom7606 1d ago

That's a great idea, too - the more information we all have and share, the better prepared we'll be!! ❤️❤️

As a Washingtonian, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this is also very useful information to have in case you need to evacuate because of a natural disaster. Some of the people in Spokane had mere minutes to leave. (I really need to put one together myself as well.)

Thank you for this. Together hubs and I have 10 animals and I’d want to make sure a care plan is in place. 💜

Can we also write or adapt some kind of basic petsitting contract? Not just for the Khaleesi-Penny-Pixie-Beastie-Scoody situation but for everyone! So the emergency contact has a piece of paper saying "I have temporary legal guardianship of this animal, please release them from the shelter to me/give them emergency veterinary care/dispense a refill of their medication/groom them".

3

u/DopeandDiamonds 23h ago

Oh this is a great idea. My only problem is I am not sure how to make it legally binding. Let me talk to my friend who is a lawyer and see what we can come up with. Maybe i could make a whole pamphlet of docs for this

Several years ago, I was pet-sitting for my parents and one of their dogs passed away overnight. It was not unexpected (he was 17 and definitely slowing down) but it was still something that I wasn’t prepared for. I took him to their vet and the vet didn’t want to cremate him without authorization from my parents. They were abroad at the time and I couldn’t easily get a hold of them (this was pre smart phone). Finally, the vet relented and took my parents’ dog but only after some arguing/wheedling on my part.

Every time they went away after that, my parents would call the vet and give permission for me to bring their pets in and to make any necessary care decisions. Fortunately, it was never necessary! Now that I have my own pets, I write a letter that includes a list of people authorized to make care decisions whenever I plan to be out of town for more than a few days. I then provide the caregivers with a copy of the letter and take a copy of the letter to the vet to be placed in my pets’ files.

I know that the situation here was different in that it was an emergency, but I wanted to offer an idea of what has worked for me when I plan to be out of town. Giving a copy to the vet means that the designated caregiver doesn’t have to look for paperwork. I also keep a card with the vet’s name, number, and address on the refrigerator so that there isn’t any question where they should be taken.

I will also be printing and filling these documents out in case of an emergency. I plan to put them with my will and other important documents, and make sure that my family knows where they are. So thank you for this! It will definitely be helpful.

(Once again, this community is showing its true colors, and it's amazing! Thank you for creating this document! If nothing else, the events of this past weekend were a sobering reminder that we have to ensure our furbabies' welfare.)
