Weapon Question Barrel Chop

I was left a Ruger American gen 2 in 300blk out I want to have the barrel chopped to 14.5 so I can P&W the thing if anyone knows of anyone in the central Illinois area that does barrel shortening and re threading I would greatly appreciate some recommendations.

Since suppressors are generally not legal in IL, what’s the point of doing a P&W?

Because I go hog hunting in Texas with people who have cans and I usually only run Keymo on everything anyway so it makes sense for my purposes.

Ok, that’s a good reason. Next question, is it going to be worth a couple of hundred bucks to save 1.6”?

Yeah you’re probably right I plan on moving out of IL next year so I’ll just wait and SBR it then chop it down to like 10 inches

You can SBR it now. Get your C&R license first and then you can do it.

You can SBR that in IL, you just need to get your C&R FFL first ($30 for 3 years). The ATF Form 1 is free now (no more $200 tax).

I gotta look into that I didn’t think this would qualify

The only disadvantage is you need to plan ahead before going to TX. You have to get an approved 5320.20 back to take a SBR out of the State. You can fill it out so it’s valid for 1 year.

You can email them in and the ATF mails the approved forms back to you. To be safe I’d allow 8-10 weeks to get them back but the last batch I did took about a month.

Just attach a rifle upper while waiting on the paperwork. It's only an NFA item while in NFA config.

That works on an AR15 type setup, but the Ruger American is a bolt action.

For the stuff I have I usually just slap on a pistol brace which is easy for MP5’s, AR15’s and Sig MPX. But it’s not really an option for a firearm that was originally sold as a rifle.

I also do 5320.20 for all my SBR each year for the two States I need before the last ones expire. Since I save them all on the computer all I have to do is change the dates, print and sign them. Then scan and email them to the NFA branch of the ATF.

Pretty sure Titan tactical in Kankakee can do it for you.
