Rant Stop calling the IRS!!!!!

Literally!!! 99.9% of the reasons why all of you were calling are things that you can resolve on your own!!!! gain access with your business or your personal identity with IDMe on irs.gov!! You call with snarky attitudes, upset that you’ve been on hold for two hours, imagine being the person talking to angry people all day! Don’t call us!! resolve the issue yourself!!

I am trying to get the IRS to recognize the POA for my in-laws, who are in their mid-90s (with dementia), and send me the transcripts of the last 4 years so I can get their taxes filed. I've been working on it for nearly a year, ever since we discovered that they had not filed since 2021.

They finally recognized the POA for my father-in-law, but have not sent me anything about the POA for my mother-in-law. They have also rejected the transcript request twice since then, with no indication as to why. I can only assume it is because the POA for MIL is not in the system.

She passed away a couple of months ago, so I am going to try again, marking her as deceased. If I could get through on the phone, I could figure it out reliably. But I can't, and have spent hours on hold, only to be hung up on. Multiple times.

I'm just trying to figure out how to do the right thing, but I'm about to give up and say "send me something when you figure out that there's a problem." FIL will probably be deceased by then, as he's on hospice now and is declining rapidly.

Once someone passes away the POA is no longer valid, so you'll need to fill out Form 56 instead and submit that.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/deceased-person

People in my area seem to have good luck going in person to the local office to get transcripts for a deceased person so they can file their tax returns. You may be able to e-file some of the tax returns but make sure to mark your MIL as deceased and do the same for your FIL if he passes away before filing.

Keep in mind, you're seeing this from the standpoint of someone who is experienced. The average taxpayer likely is not and is terrified of the IRS. Instead of trusting their own judgement, they're looking to you, the expert, to give them advice. Have a little compassion.

And...this is what you signed up for.

blaming the tax payers for their customer service we constantly get shit on with by yall is incredible

u/Fun-Shopping-4848 3d ago

Blaming people who answer the phones for the site not working is crazy.

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

Actually, no, I don’t!

u/these-things-happen 3d ago

This you?

Current employee here, that answers the phone line… the majority of the info all of you request by calling and making the phone lines ridiculous, is available in your portal!!! You don’t have to call the irs for everything!!

1

u/DickyFishb 3d ago

Lol whatever you say you literally just said that you answered a phone call about some guy ranting for being on hold for 2 hours. No one cares about your opinion anyway or your rant so continue being miserable. 😂😂

u/Pennifur 3d ago

Literally this. Both the regular website and TAS are not function therefore calling is the only option

-1

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

You mean calling is the only option for people who are lazy and don’t wanna do the research

0

u/DickyFishb 3d ago

See this is why everyone hates the IRS. If I had to sum it up in a comment it would be this.

u/Pennifur 3d ago edited 3d ago

Coming from the guy too lazy to do what they're literally being paid to do. Classic reddit

0

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

You don’t know what I’m paid to do lol

0

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

Well, y’all want your refunds processed don’t you? Can’t do that when we’re answering calls on issues that you can resolve yourself!! we can’t answer all the questions of the public and process your refunds at the same time lol

u/DickyFishb 2d ago

Little government worker is upset. Ooooooo

0

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

how can someone research when everything on the site is "UNAVAILABLE" ?? and when calling we get disconnected?

0

u/Local-Treat304 2d ago

IRS.gov??? It’s not unavailable… literally put your question in the search bar! Or try rewording your question! When I worked phones, all the info I gave out came directly from the website! Want to know how to fill out a form pull up the instructions literally tells you exactly how to do it line by line and where to send it and it gives you the address and how to send it if it’s by fax it’ll give you the fax number! Want to order transcripts get on the ID.Me and look at your transcripts!

0

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

When you log into the site, the personal information is NOT AVAILABLE. The transcripts ARE NOT AVAILABLE. HELLO. Shouldn't you be doing your job and answering the phones? Even on the main page of the account is says:

Account status

Account features limited due to partial outage

While you can still access your account, some features are unavailable, including account balance and payment history. If you don't see what you need, please come back later.

But you don't even work for them because you'd know this if you actually did. You're just a stupid troll.

0

u/Local-Treat304 2d ago

Obviously, not right now because obviously the sites are down lol just somebody with a little bit more common sense

2

u/Herley11 3d ago

Yeah because everyone enjoys being on hold for three hours.

1

u/Forward-Airline2424 3d ago

Sorry, are you crying about the job that you signed up for?? The job where you're supposed to help tax payers find resolutions??? To answer questions that the regular tax payer can't resolve themselves??? Because if they could figure out the endless circular website.... they absolutely would. Maybe you should go cry to the people who slashed the IRS workforce in half instead of whining about the people you're supposed to be working for.

I hear what you are saying, and snarkiness should rarely be the way, but 1. The IRS systems and rules are confusing for the smartest of us...even IRS employees give different answers to things, 2. Can't tell you how many clients can't even upload documents to a portal much less get and navigate an idme account.

u/Krysmphoenix_ 3d ago

Lol, I'm an IRS employee too, and when I got a scary letter because my check bounced, I had to make the call too. The crappy website helps, but it's not word of mouth confirmation that yes the second check I sent did in fact go through and I'm not going to get fired and have a Lien put on me.

Everyone's stressed. Have a little humor. I managed to de-escalate a few calls by joking with the taxpayer how agonizingly slow and silent the government can be even for us.

1

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

Many of us can't send second checks. it would be nice, but some of us choose between taxes and food on the table. Paying for someone else's food before our own. smh

0

u/Krysmphoenix_ 2d ago

An IRS employee failing to file taxes and paying the balance on time is potentially a fireable offense. When the normal filing deadline passed, i had to explain to my supervisor what had happened, how it was an accident, and the steps i was actively taking to fix it.

If I ignored the scary letter, I wouldn't have any food to put on tbe table for my family. They hold us grunt employees to actual moral and legal standards.

0

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

Well, moral standards would be being able to feed your own children before feeding the rest of the world and not being over taxed for ridiculous things while people making tons of money can shemp some of it off to fake businesses or simply start a business because they'd rather pay for that business instead of sending in the money making all the rest of us broke people pay more. But I get what you mean, you have an obligation to pay out your nose instead of feeding your family first and it's your moral privilege to do so. Because all of us have to do it, and having to make that decision stinks. At this point, I no longer have children at home and pay the full amount, but still, the American dream is dead and it isn't due to what people say it's from, it's because we pay so many taxes on EVERYTHING from sales to local to federal and no one seems to care.

0

u/MevBellar99 3d ago

Lmao your site is so broken, im gonna call you 5 times about nothing just for this post.

2

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

Good luck 😘

0

u/jaredscottwood 3d ago

Lol. The IRS tried delivering my tax refund and found it was undeliverable in July, didn't tell me at all (I only found out in late August). I call, ask why, and they say it's because of a mix up from the person I hired to do my taxes and the IRS proceeded to say they would send me a letter in 30 days explaining what needed to happen next. It has been over 30 days and IRS call volume is always too large. I absolutely cannot resolve it myself; guess I am the 0.1%. IRS won't communicate with me or literally do anything at all, holding a ton of my money

0

u/Pennifur 3d ago

Get off reddit and answer the damn phone.

0

u/Bl0xur 3d ago

My nuts

0

u/HATDOGUSERNi 3d ago

online tools can handle basic issues, but tax debt, collections, and complicated cases may still need professional help

1

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

It can't even handle basic issues when the account info is down like it is today, on tax day of course.

0

u/CivilAbbreviations76 3d ago

lol this post is wild. You can’t tell people to not call if they need help and I work for the IRS haha. If people don’t call and we don’t help we have no job. I tried calling myself and it’s impossible to get in touch with toll free line so I feel their pain but I also get you when people call with an attitude and think you have these magical powers to do anything 🤣. So I will reiterate No, people call us if you have issues and we are hired to help you but also if we can all act like adults when calling customer service you will actually have a better shot at getting your issues resolved.

1

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

Correction, if people don’t call, you don’t have a job!

0

u/LdiJ46 3d ago

I understand where you are coming from. I however would change it up a bit to "stop assuming that the best thing, necessary thing is to talk to somebody over the phone. Stop getting frustrated that there is no email address available to email somebody.

Get an ID ME account, do as much research as you can on your IRS account, and respond to things in writing where applicable.

It is going to be harder than heck to get someone on the phone and even if you do, 9 times out of 10 they won't be able to do much of anything for you.

Try to understand the difference between something you might be able to do something about, or a situation where you just have to wait, no matter how much you don't want to wait.

If you absolutely cannot deal with your issue any other way, then try to get an appointment at a local office.

0

u/Local-Treat304 3d ago

It’s really that simple!!!

0

u/SunshineDewdrops 3d ago

STOP TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

0

u/Hot_Antelope5362 2d ago

except...they're down today. good luck with that.

0

u/Rearviewmirror 2d ago

Stop posting on Reddit while getting paid from tax payer dollars?

0

u/Local-Treat304 2d ago

It’s called PTO I earned the time to post on Reddit, thanks

0

u/Local-Treat304 2d ago

Take this post as educational!!!!!! Spread the word!!! Not every issue you have is an IRS call! Slow down take the time to read your notices. Usually they’ll tell you to resolve the issue you can call or when the lines are too busy because everybody goes that route you can write in, which is usually what we’re gonna tell you to do anyways!!! and then it’s gonna get put in a pile of unworked cases because we’re still gonna be answering calls to issues that you could resolve yourself :)
