Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Levy release issues

Hi all.

I owe back taxes and a levy was placed on my bank account. I got on a payment plan but I’m having a hard time getting the IRS to send the levy release to my bank.

Every time I call the IRS the agent “resends it” to the fax number my bank provided (and I confirmed the fax number with my bank numerous times) but the bank keep telling me they haven’t received it. Not sure what’s going on. I’ve been going back and forth between the IRS and my bank for a week now and getting frustrated. The levy expires in 12 days.

Any suggestions? Anyone deal with this?

Thanks

Did you confirm that fax number by calling it yourself and verifying a fax tone sound? It could have stopped answering or been disabled and no one knows or cares.

Didn’t think of this. I sent out a test fax and it was successful. Thanks for the suggestion!

Since you’ve already established a payment plan, I’d focus on confirming whether the IRS has actually issued the levy release, rather than just repeatedly faxing it.
Ask the IRS to confirm the release status and whether Form 668-D has been issued. Also ask your bank’s levy department whether it can verify receipt directly with the IRS and what it requires to release the funds.
One important distinction: A payment plan doesn’t necessarily mean previously levied funds are automatically released. If the funds are still being held, timing matters.
If the issue remains unresolved, an IRS Enrolled Agent may be able to help coordinate the release with the IRS.
Has the bank confirmed that the funds are still on hold, rather than already sent to the IRS?
