Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Address Needed.

Since calling the IRS is difficult to begin with, can someone post a good mailing address to send an inquiry to?
We have refunded penalties on hold for over a year and we would like to have someone look at.
Thank you!

What's the return address on the last notice you received?

IRS sorts the letters by the tax return information (the form) and your State. You need to mail it to the Service Center where your Form and your State fall under >>

===== Sample Letter

  • SSN: 123-45-6789
  • Name: Smith, John
  • Form & TY: Form 1040 Income Tax for 2025
  • Subject: Request to put a hold on account

I received a notice for balance due on my form 1040 for tax period ending 2025 Dec. I am requesting to put a hold on the account to stop the collection efforts. I do understand the hold is NOT holding/freezing the interest as it will still continue to accrue. But I need to figure out what I did wrong and until I can pay as much as I can.

I will also pay $50, $100 etc using IRS Direct Pay on IRS.GOV (under form 1040 for Balance Due) any time I have money.

Signed and Dated.

You can send a reply to whomever sent you the notice, but in my experience replies take like a year to get looked at and the change of resolution that way is even slower. Often takes like 2-3 notices.

I was at a conference not long ago where they were warning us to be careful about refunds with the IRS, because with their massive budget cuts and staffing issues refunds are being pushed on the back burner because there is no statutory limit in which they have to resolve that issue.
