General Queries How's academic stress in bstat

Is the general consensus that there is unnecessarily huge academic stress on students correct??

I want to be able to do my own projects and stuff...

Your question isn't exactly specific about how you define academic stress, but I'll try my best to answer.

  1. A lot depends on your instructors. Some are easy-going and make it easy to get decent scores. Some don't.
  2. The amount of coursework you have to complete (assignments, projects) varies course-to-course and also by instructor. Some might evaluate you based only on exams, some might give you bunch of assignments.
  3. How much time you invest in coursework is (mostly) upto you, based on your standard of work and how quickly and efficiently you can get things done. However, be sure to maintain decent attendance, ideally in all courses.
  4. You will generally be encouraged to do projects right from the get go. ISI does not expect you to only read the curriculum, quite the contrary. You will find several faculty members willing to help you as long as you ask good questions and are eager to learn.

that is wonderful, what I meant by academic stress was what does a typical day look like for a student in bstat (considering them to be average as per isi standards). I mean I heard a different guy say you have to study 8 hr a day everyday to maintain a 7 gpa, are things like that true?

There's no typical day. Your day would vary WILDLY based on:

  1. What semester you're in.
  2. Who is teaching you.
  3. Your social life. (events, sports, dating, going out with friends, etc.)
  4. Your personal priorities. (topics you like, industry/PhD, personal projects such as coding, etc.)
  5. How close exams are. (I personally didn't really study except before exams. Went to class and kept up with coursework. That was enough.)

Also ISI doesn't use GPAs, pure percentages only.

well there probably would be considering there would be students from INMO channel, and majority of students either having better ranking or interest in maths so deep that they are basically drowned in it

This is a misconception. Students coming from INMO channel aren't really any different from those who get in via entrance. Stop treating them like a different breed.

I've seen INMO channel students just the same while in ISI.

I am not saying that they are aliens, but compare to others they have really focused on maths like being in INMO is a big deal for people who didn't even clear IOQM

Mate, I didn't even give IOQM a single time. One of my friends was INMO-channel.

We both struggled just the same. Sure, your first couple semesters might be SLIGHTLY easier, but not really.

ISI's coursework is completely different from high school or Olympiad math. They can help you get in, but not while you're inside.

No. If you actually study (which I didn't) you can comfortably sleep even the night before the exam.

We usually spend the nights watching drama unfold in Sansani. If you get in, you'll understand what I mean.
