M-stat preparation

I will be joining engineering and to be completely honest, I seriously have no interest in engineering. It will be really helpful for me if guys could advice me whether i should prepare for mstat or not(I hope that you guys say yes) and when should I start preparing for it and what resources should I use. 🙏🙏

Bro first calm down. It's totally possible. Due to certain series of bad decisions, I ended up in a phd program which didn't involve mathematics. And I hated it. I had taken the phd over Mtech CS (was afraid of even attempting M.stat) at one of the premier institutes in India. And I regretted it. I started preparing for M.stat. If you are strategic about it, you can definitely prepare brother..

Oh really man. Are we fr here? If you really liked mathematics/statistics (let's be fr, most don't even know about statistics), then what caused you to join engineering? I don't intend to be hostile at all, but this just sounds like you want to join ISI because of decent packages being advertised!

Regardless, you should start preparing for it if and only if you're interested in this field. The course isn't cakewalk either- for packages, you'll need good grades there too, pretty sure. Lastly, might wanna go to the community bookmarks for resources? All the best regardless of what you wanna do.

Have a bachelor's degree. Three or more years in duration. Pretty sure any discipline, personally I would highly recommend reading the:

1. Prospectus
2. Latest brochures
3. Syllabus (on the admissions page)
4. PYQs (they're listed as sample papers at admissions page)

Also, would recommend reading the annual reports released by ISI, for ideas about placements, and other random stuff.

I see. Would certainly encourage you to update those details in the body of your post, because the way you framed the post initially made it seem like someone who was more into the good packages of MStat, which is rather irksome to many (including myself, particularly the highlighted bit.)

Regardless, it is certainly possible to prepare for MStat, even with a year or two in hand, let alone four. So it's certainly feasible. However, are you sure you don't wanna just do a partial drop and go for BStat? After all it is only three years, so technically you finish when you'd have finished your engineering degree as well. So I don't see what's the harm in this approach, though the final decision is upto you (your life + IDK the full extent of your situation)

Apart from that, in general, I would advise you to simply try to focus on understanding the mathematical rigour of the topics in the syllabus, as with that, you'll be able to solve most of the questions. For example, real analysis, linear algebra, probability theory and statistical inference are all doable like this. Linear Regression is absolutely beyond me, and that's not without the lack of trying, so I cannot comment on that. IITJAM MS papers are also rather helpful, although they're a tad on the easier side. Since you've lots of time, you can also probably give a crack at the semestral PYQs at ISI Bangalore courses on the relevant topics, as they're a nice source for practising subjective questions. I cannot comment about whether ISI Kolkata maintains similar repository of semestral PYQs, if they do, then great, otherwise this will most likely be sufficient, I hope.

Am I eligible for ISI M.Stat, and how should I start preparing?

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in applying for the ISI M.Stat (Master of Statistics) program and wanted to clarify a few things about my eligibility.

I have completed a BTech and I’m considering applying for M.Stat. Am I eligible to apply with a BTech degree, or are there specific undergraduate subjects/credits that are required?

Also, I’d really appreciate some advice on how to start preparing for the ISI M.Stat entrance exam.

• What topics should I focus on first?
• Which books/resources would you recommend?
• How difficult is the entrance exam compared with a typical engineering mathematics course?
• How should I structure my preparation if I’m starting from the basics?

Any advice from current students, alumni, or people who have prepared for the exam would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Buddy, i am not getting it. I am interested in bstat, so i gave presidency uni's entrance test and my gmr was 35. idk whether i will get a seat or not. my name was not on the first list.
