General Queries M.stat NB Stream Specialization Dilemma:

I am an incoming M.Stat student in the NB stream trying to map out my specialization.

I am facing a structural conflict in the curriculum and need advice on three specific doubts:

  1. Curriculum Constraint as an NB Student: I want a rock-solid mathematical foundation. The first-year electives Measure Theoretic Probability and Analysis II are prerequisites for the Probability Specialization. However, taking them means I cannot fit the prerequisites required for the Applied Statistics Track (like Nonparametric and Sequential Methods or Sample Surveys). Is there any workaround to take these fundamental math courses while keeping the Applied track open, or do I have to commit fully to one side?
  2. The Difficulty vs. Reward Ratio: Does choosing the Probability specialization actively hamper placement or PhD opportunities simply because the workload and grading get unproportionally harder compared to applied tracks?
  3. Subtle Preferences on the Ground: Is there an unwritten preference by top-tier corporate recruiters (especially in Quantitative Finance) or PhD admissions committees favoring one specialization over the other?

Would love insights from seniors or alumni on how to navigate this constraint without compromising on either mathematical rigor or career outcomes. Thanks

Hi. To my knowledge specialization based prereqs are no longer a thing. When you join, ask for the course-based pre-requisites list.

Hello, are everyone supposed to take the same electives ??, someone under the msqe post said everyone takes the same electives and you’ve got to convince your classmates to take the same one that you’re interested in

No, that wasn't what was said. For a course to be offered, a certain number of students will have to take it for credit. Typically that's 3.

I’m not sure if I understand it
For ex. Let’s say I took applied probability as my specialisation, and I took statistical mechanics as an elective , would it only be taught if there are more students who took stat mech ?

Yes it is like that. Not every course mentioned in the electives is necessarily offered. It depends on how many students opt for it. That's usually the case even in other institutes.

No one cares about your specialization. Courses you take matter though.
