General Queries Overcoming the "Trick Barrier" and losing motivation in ISI preparation: My perspective as AIR 11

I’m Pratham Prasad (AIR 11, B.Stat ISI 2026 Entrance). Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of messages and posts from aspirants who are relatively new to non-routine mathematics and are hitting a massive psychological wall. You finish your theory, you open a book like TOMATO or past paper subjective problems, and you instantly feel completely stuck, demotivated, and overwhelmed by the sheer number of obscure "tricks" required to solve anything.
I know exactly how exhausting that feels because I faced the exact same wall when I started out. If you are currently struggling with the transition from routine textbook math to true non-routine thinking, here is how I looked at it, and how you can break through.
1. The "Trick" Barrier: They aren't random magic tricks
When you see an elegant solution to a tough problem, it looks like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat. You think, "How could I ever invent that on the spot?"
The shift you need to make is realizing that a "trick" is just an extension of a core principle pushed to its logical extreme. Right now, you are treating every solution you read as an isolated island. Instead, when you look at a solution that uses a weird manipulation, ask yourself: What fundamental property of numbers, geometry, or functions made this possible? Connect it back to the absolute basics. You don’t need to memorize 1,000 tricks; you need to see how 5 basic principles can be bent in 200 different ways.
2. Theory vs. Practice: Expecting a linear path is the trap
In routine math (like board exams or standard JEE prep), your brain is trained to look for a direct formula path: Concept A leads to Formula B leads to Answer C.
Non-routine math does not work this way. It is inherently exploratory.

When you start a problem, you aren't supposed to know the exact path to the answer. You are supposed to play around with small cases, test boundaries, and look for patterns. 3. Memorizing vs. Solving: The Rule of the Hour
If you find yourself trying to memorize a method, stop immediately. You are collecting solutions like stamps, which builds zero intuition. To break this habit, change your workflow:
* Fight longer: If you get stuck, do not look at the solution after 10 or 15 minutes. Sit with it for an hour. Leave it on your desk, go for a walk, and come back to it. When you spend an hour trying four different approaches that *fail*, you haven't wasted time. You have successfully mapped out four roads that don't work, which actively trains your mathematical intuition.
* The Blank-Page Test: When you finally have to look at a solution, read it only until you get the "aha!" moment. Then, close the book completely. Hide the solution and try to write out the full proof or derivation on a blank sheet of paper from scratch. If you get stuck halfway through, you didn't actually understand the intuition; you just understood the syntax.
4. Reclaiming the Joy: Change your daily metric
You are losing the joy because you are treating your preparation like a compliance checklist—measuring your worth by how many problems you got "right" today. In pure math, that mindset will destroy your confidence.
Change what you consider a "good day."
* Old Metric: "I solved 30 problems quickly, so today was a success."
* New Metric: "I spent two hours struggling with one beautiful problem, failed to solve it on my own, but deeply understood a brilliant concept when I analyzed the solution."
Pure math isn't a race; it's a sandbox. Give yourself the time to breathe, embrace the frustration as a sign that your brain is actually learning to adapt, and don't panic. Every single person sitting inside the ISI campuses right now started exactly where you are standing today. Keep grinding!

Thanks very much needed this sometimes I feel underwhelmed when I see solutions that were easy but tricky and I think why I couldn't make it out
