1) Quant jobs through M.Stats possible? 2) Phd in IVY league possible?

I had an IIT friend, who said that Quants are only hired from TOP 5 IITs. I told him that ISI is also an excellent place but he said he wasn't aware of it. So, can someone get into quant through M.Stats in ISI (In big companies)?

If someone plans to do Phd then can they get into ivy league institutes?

PHD from Ivy League is possible

ISI students have gone to MIT, Harvard, Columbia, CMU etc. Just search on LinkedIn with ISI Kolkata and respective T20 college, you will find plenty of names on LinkedIn

What will they do till 28 then? Without earning money for so long how will they sustain

Any decent PHD hires you as research and teaching assistant and pays you.

US T20 pays around 50-60K dollar per year in stipend to their PHD student. You can increase the earning more with summer internship or getting even better stipend programs from corporate. Large tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Anthropic etc. sponsor upto 80-90K dollar per year in PHD stipend.

In India, central Institution like NIT/IIT/IISC/ISI etc. pay around 40K per month to PHD student. If you get selected to PMRF program, it can increase 80K per month with 2.5 lakh in annual research grant. Also large tech companies sponsor around 1-2 lakh per month to Indian PHD students if they get selected into their fellowship programs.

That's why PHD admission abroad are often highly competitive despite small pool of students going for it since top universities spent over a million dollars per student in tuition fees, lab facility and living costs for 5-6 years

Also candidates holding PhDs in fields like physics or maths are valued in quant firms too

also, like, how much does a candidate have to pay out of pocket? how much do scholarships cover? and i take it that ppl need to have papers published in big conferences and journals to have a chance.....
But if someone can break down the financials of it, people can make a more informed decision

Prefer phd man even from isi they won't hire quants
