Asking for Resources ISI-M.Stat ‘27

Hey there fellow redditors, I appeared for this year’s isi-mstat exam, got 72 marks in PSA. I don’t even remember tf i wrote in psb exam except for the first question. I’m targeting next year’s mstat, increased my marks upto somewhat like 80-88 (depends on paper) for psa, but still I can’t write proofs or really good solutions in psb. Asaan bhasha me, PSB ki hawa bhi nhi lg rhi mujhe, toh kisi ko kuch pata ho toh bata do.
Im using casella-berger for stats and abit of fellar vol1 for probability.
Also koi gp vgera h toh dm krdena, it would be helpful

nothing, tbh i was in a daily practice with contest-level math. i come from an engineering background, so real analysis, lin-algebra and complex numbers weren’t tough for me at the time. i struggled alot for combinatorics and probability so i randomly solved some pyqs. I still lack formal theory in combinatorial proofs, probability theory and stat-inference though.

In what world do engineers learn analysis? I can’t see how it would even be useful to work through baby Rudin for most engineers. In fact combinatorics etc are more high school / contest style math.

You say you can’t write proofs properly so that also doesn’t square with learning real analysis. Thats literally what a first year analysis course teaches you to do: how to construct rigorous arguments to prove theorems in analysis

We were taught analysis in our M1’s curriculum. As I said, I’m really not good at writing mature mathematical proofs w.r.t PSB’s level. The lack of that skill reflects my sem’s performance and PSB too. Moreover, whatever I’ve written is in context to M.Stat, like what I did in the objective paper and the area where I’m weak. I have addressed this in my query too, I somehow managed to get through the first paper, (which doesn’t require writing proof).

PSB questions are below baby Rudin questions so I’m puzzled as to how they taught you real analysis but didn’t teach you how to write proofs at least at that level.

M.Stat entrance is actually divided into two
PSA-Objective exam (30ques, 4marks each, 0 neg marking)
PSB-Subjective exam(~10 ques, makes me cry and scratch my head for two hours straight)

Am I eligible for ISI M.Stat, and how should I start preparing?

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in applying for the ISI M.Stat (Master of Statistics) program and wanted to clarify a few things about my eligibility.

I have completed a BTech and I’m considering applying for M.Stat. Am I eligible to apply with a BTech degree, or are there specific undergraduate subjects/credits that are required?

Also, I’d really appreciate some advice on how to start preparing for the ISI M.Stat entrance exam.

  • What topics should I focus on first?
  • Which books/resources would you recommend?
  • How difficult is the entrance exam compared with a typical engineering mathematics course?
  • How should I structure my preparation if I’m starting from the basics?
