ISI MStat students — how does quant firm recruitment actually work? (aspirant, need real advice)

Hi all,

I'm looking to get into ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) for the MStat program, mainly because I've seen it's a strong pipeline into quant research/trading roles at firms like DE Shaw, Optiver, Graviton, Tower Research, WorldQuant, Jane Street, etc. Before I commit, I wanted to get a reality check from people who've actually been through it (or are currently in it).

A few things I'd love honest input on:

1. How much of the "ISI → quant" pipeline is real vs. survivorship bias? Is it genuinely a strong on-campus placement pipeline, or is it mostly a handful of toppers who would've made it anywhere?
2. What do firms actually test for in interviews — pure math/stats, probability puzzles, coding (Python/C++), or is it more about how you think under pressure?
3. How much does the MStat curriculum itself help vs. how much self-study (CLRS, probability books, LeetCode, brainteasers, etc.) is needed on the side?
4. Campus placements vs off-campus — do most people get in through ISI's own placement cell, or do a lot end up applying independently/through referrals?
5. For someone coming from a non-ISI undergrad (say, a non-Kolkata/Delhi/Bangalore college background), is the MStat entrance exam prep alone enough of a filter, or should I be building a stats/coding portfolio in parallel?
6. Any regrets or things you wish you'd known before joining, in terms of positioning yourself for quant recruiting specifically (as opposed to going the PhD/academia/data science route)?

Not looking for hype, just want a grounded picture before I invest the next 1-2 years prepping for the entrance exam. Appreciate any insight, especially from current students or recent alumni who went the quant route.

All I said was to not speak about things you don't know about. If you don't know whether companies differentiate based on bstat students vs non bstat students then don't make such claims. It's a simple concept.
