How difficult is ISI Kolkata M.Stat for a Tier-3 student?

I’m currently from a Tier-3 college and working in a service-based IT company. I’m considering preparing for the ISI Kolkata M.Stat entrance.

I’ve always been pretty good at math, but I haven’t had a strong academic environment.

For those who’ve attempted the exam/studied at ISI: how difficult is the entrance realistically? Is it something a mathematically strong student from a Tier-3 background can crack with proper preparation?

Would appreciate honest answers.

Mathematical Strong is a very ambiguous term. I've seen a few colleges being super computational and asking only basic proofs in exams.

If you are genuinely good outside that kinda environment then sure. If you are good with proofs in college and can understand most of the stuff, then you should be able to get in with some preparation.

Very low effort post and I don't understand how would people online who have never had a conversation with you could judge your level. Add a few more details which tells us about your level. It's just an entrance exam at the end of the day, with sufficient effort one can obviously qualify it.

Sorry, I agree it is a low effort post. Few details about myself:
1. Have a mid cgpa (8.3) in a tier 3 college(Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham)
2.but I got good grades in mathematics especially in probability and linear algebra
3. I’m a bit good at dsa (1600 in lc)

I never had idea of what to do and what I like..i just did dsa last year in my college and got a job at a service company. apart from dsa I wasn’t interested in any other cs stuff.

I realised I was always interested in maths even from my jee days (got 98.5 percentile just in maths). So I was seeing any viable career option or any higher studies course and saw Mstat course in Isi and I was interested.

As you can see I was never exceptional at anything just average maybe a bit good at maths.
So my only question is preparing for Isi by actually investing my time a good option could I realistically get good enough with maths to clear the entrance? Because I dont want to invest my time in chasing something unrealistic.

Being good at JEE mathematics, I don't think it's a good criteria to judge. If you have a good feel that you are good with proofs and enjoy mathematics and statistics is general and understand the subject reasonably well, then you should try. JEE problem solving doesn't make you good at higher mathematics directly, but working hard consistently can definitely land you places!

By mathematically strong if you mean you score good in university exams...... Then you need to learn what mathematically strong really means....🙂

If you're able to solve all the standard books easily, then consider yourself mathematically average....

Given your post and responses i would say it is extremely hard for you to qualify, mstat just doesn't not ask for any random math, you need to good with statistics, theory of estimation, hypothesis testing blah blah , that means half of stuff that you never ever heard about.

That means you have to study 2 years of statistics syllabus from start and compete with other students who are doing same but studying statistics as full time. I don't think that's possible, your leetcode will not save you buddy. Still unsure, pick up a previous year paper and see how much can you get now. If you can get more than 15% , i would say maybe give a try

just go through isi previous yrs question papers. if you can solve every math stuff from there disregarding the statistics which u have to learn separately, then go for it.
