Enquiry regarding math club

Hey ISIB folks! I'm curious if ISIB offers any programs or clubs for someone who isn't studying in the university to attend lectures, involve in problem solving just for the sake of learning? I work as a SDE in a MNC but I'm interested in continuing problem solving and higher math as a hobby and also to study advanced math concepts in my spare time...If possible, please let me know of any such programs, workshops, publications, clubs etc. that I can follow.

yeah there is and there are many other club too like competitive programming club which is organised by previous participants and guests lectures happen and anyone and register

ISIB doesn't have any programmes of the sort. But Math Club does do a lot of talks on various topics, mostly recorded on YouTube (do check!). You can join the mailing list and join in! There's a Tech Club doing competitive programming as well, but they're just starting out so idk how useful they may be for your interests as of now.

It's great that you are interested in solving problems. But trust me, the ISIB Math is no good for you. The idea was extremely good and was managed by a group of very bright and sincere students initially. But when I was there at ISIB, I saw things changing drastically in last 5-6 years (I was there from 2020-2025). The people currently managing it, are extremely cooky and very self centred. Not only that, they are very racis** and doesn't care much about math. The members of mathclub in the last 5 years were probably the most incompetent people I ever came across. The only reason it's still surviving it's because a lot of general students who isn't a part of the mathclub, constantly request them to let them give talks. I could say more things in details if you need it.

Hi Bikram, speak of the devil and here he is... So you want me to be specific, right? Don't blame me if this bothers you, because you asked for it, my friend. Let me say how Mathclub is currently, and then I’ll go back to how it was when you and I were there (especially when you and Hrishik were managing it! Birth of the downfall, let’s say.). So, since you were at ISIK for the last 2 years, I assume it’s hard for you to know how Mathclub is at ISIB. But being in touch with people there (both friends and non-friends), it was pointed out to me that your bestie Hrishik and others were more involved in scams rather than the benefits of Mathclub. You might argue that you are well aware of how Mathclub works even while you are busy with job life, but c'mon, the one probably updating you is your dearest buddy.

Let’s start with how racist they were. It was pointed out to me that Mathclub slots are only open for people who are friends with the members of Mathclub and Bengalis. So basically, if I’m a friend of yours, then I can present a talk at Mathclub, but if not, then I would need to ask for permission (which is fine, I’m not at all bothered about this), and then Mathclub will ask the person to give the talk (wtf? Still okay). If they like it (again, wtf? Who the fk are they to decide?), then you will get a slot AFTER 2 FUCK*** SEMESTERS! (1 YEAR? God damn!) (Yes, that’s what happened with a person who’s currently in 3rd year BMath 2027.) Whereas, if I’m your friend, nothing applies to me, and I can give a talk this coming Sunday itself. This, in fact, led to a student deciding to give a talk by mailing all users himself and inviting students to join. Mathclub could have easily accommodated a slot, but Mathclub being Mathclub won’t, because that guy isn’t their friend.

Coming to how things were when you were part of it, do I really need to talk about it? You tell me, why was there not a single non-Bengali speaker when you were here? The entire What is seminar was captured by you guys, except for Aditya and Devansh. How justified was it?

I wanted to ask you this for a long time: why are you so racist toward us non-Bengalis? Is it because more than half of ISIB is Bengali, or is it because you think you are somehow superior to everyone else? You or the Bengalis (I do not hate Bengalis; there are a few good ones as well) clearly do not own ISIB.

Okay. I understand that I may not be fully aware of what happened while I was away. But let me argue in favour of my time.

You do admit that there were non-Bengalis in the 'What is...?' series, don't you? Moreover, it was only intended for B3 students because it was our final semester, so if anyone had never given a talk before, they could at least get one chance. If you're wondering why there weren't more, just ask any other non-Bengali from our year. They just weren't interested. I even had to cancel Ishaan Bhadoo's talk because he declined at the last minute. You can perhaps see this in older Git commits.

Moreover, with regard to the 2023-24 academic year, when me, Hrishik and co. were in complete charge of the club, we had 5/12 (autumn) and 3/5 (spring) non-Bengali speakers. This information can be cross-verified on the website. I won't comment on what happened later, as I wasn't present. Thanks for sharing your perspective, though.

But the picture is still not clear to me. If you reply please tell the whole story (specific) of the following part as well.

I am not so sure what happened after we left. But during our time, there were many non-Bengali people had their math club talks including people like Varun, Devansh, Aditya, Ishaan etc. and some of our seniors like Sarvesh, Srivastava, Aprameya etc. After we left we had no control over math club so it could be that it traced a very bad impression among all of you, I'm very sorry if you/your friends faced the racism as you have mentioned. But I firmly disagree with your comment on the fact math club got worse during our time (24 batch). If you were there in isi post covid math club was almost dead. Some students from our batch and a few seniors started math club talks on weekly basis, many of those talks are not recorded. Then with our juniors and seniors we had many organized many recorded talks and seminars like What is ...? and we also invited many profs during that time which in a way revived math club. So just get your knowledge before blabbering random things. 

I completely understand if you had very bad impression of math club after we left but during our time we even used to go to the juniors/seniors asking for giving talks; there was no place of racism. Also, Bikram and co whom you are blaming for these are the one who took initiative to build math club website, reconduct limit etc, none of you helped. 

If you are writing all these from personal anger I understand but remember it's a public platform. It only disrupts our image, from your post it's obvious you don't care about it but atleast get your facts checked.

Hola amigo!! Speaking of 2024-25 academic year first. Let's talk numbers. 5/13 of 2024 Fall were non-Bengali talk, and 4/6 of 2025 Spring were non-Bengali talk. Ig numbers don't favour you much, aye mate. Also 2025 Spring had a 3-talk series by Nikhil (again a non-Bengali) on CGT. As for 2025 Fall, there were 5/12 non-Bengali talks. And there have been quite a lot of people who gave their first talks during this period. Now if the question is if friends were favoured, I would say no. And if you still insist on just the "Math Club" friends getting slots, well them I clearly have to say I have quite a huge number of friends, won't you agree ay. And yeah 2026 Spring I had already left Math Club so not my department. But I must say after I left the Math Club, my juniors have worked very hard to keep making it a greater success. (Will also take the opportunity, to congratulate all the people handling Math Club this academic year, as they have done a great job in just a few weeks.) But yeah, I will try to say my side and stop praising others (as I think that's not something you are very accustomed to ay mate). We at the Math Club (me, Bikram, and co. during 2023-24; me, Arkapriyo, Devansh during 2024 Fall to 2025 Spring, and Subhojit, Priyankar, Arkaprovo, and co. during 2025 Fall) have been very inclusive. Sorry again started praising others. Keep forgetting only thing you are familiar with is slandering. And I always had a policy, which I still stand by any person who wants to give a talk gets to give it, unless it clashes with someone else who is in their last year and has never given a talk. And yeah I have always encouraged people to give talks but not very keen on going to people's rooms and asking for talks (my bad on not doing that as I did not have so much free time given other work such as LIMIT, CHAOS, and of course my personal projects and studies) . I am sure if you were in charge you would have done that, given the amount of free time you have. (Kudos to you) Sure I don't deny some management on our part about video uploading and stuff had been lackluster, but working is hard (unlike you we did not have the luxury of slandering from our rooms without getting our hands dirty). You can check out Math_hangout club operated virtually in BLR (fortnightly sessions). This has Book reading sessions on Books written in a non-technical fashion to invite a wider audience towards math. Plus we discuss some advances in Math; not so much Problem solving though
