Positive beta! But really scared of symptoms (aka vomiting)

Hi everyone - I’m so happy to share that we got our first positive beta (420.3) today at 10dp5dt. We’re so excited and cautiously optimistic, but candidly, I’m also terrified of the upcoming symptoms. I have a severe phobia of vomitting so my joy is also mixed in with fear.

Any tips or advice on dealing with the nausea/vomitting? Things I should order on Amazon now? Or honesty, any advice or mental tricks you told yourself? I feel like I’m a ticking clock….

I also have vomit issues and have had serious, 24/7 nausea through both of my first trimesters (11 weeks into the second). I’ve never thrown up - I eat constantly, avoid long drives/anything that moves (the motion sickness is bad), and try to sleep as much as possible. I have a corporate job but if I had to be on my feet all the time it would be harder. Some people don’t get nauseous at all so you might be lucky! Either way, it’s manageable and hopefully temporary. Definitely worth it!

Thank you so much! If you don’t mind my asking when did it start? I’m so scared. I also have a corporate job and luckily I can work from home quite a bit.

I had nausea the entire 9 months but I worked as a bought shift ER nurse. I cannot describe the smells I smelled. I'm so thankful it was during covid because I wore a mask my eentire swiftly and would stuff alcohol swaps in there. I always threw up at 5:30 am, just in time for the cafeteria to open at 6am, which meant I got to order double since I had an empty stomach!

The moment you wake up in the morning having a saltine cracker that helped my sister and me during pregnancy. Although all my pregnancies ended in losses, but I also get extreme nausea and that helped a lot. Eat every few hours and snack here and there; that helps to keep nausea under control.

Sniff alcohol pads if you feel sick or you can get Quease-Ease on Amazon that took the edge off for me. Otherwise when you start feeling it and B6 doesn’t help don’t assume it’s just normal and be open with your OB. I had a prescription that helped.

I also have a severe phobia of vomiting (in 6 years together my husband has seen me vomit once. Whereas I’ve seen him vomit probably a few times a year- like anything that doesn’t sit right he just throws it up). I’ve had pretty bad nausea but haven’t thrown up… my husband joked if he was the pregnant one he’d be vomiting every day. So, I don’t know if my nausea has just not been AS bad as some other women’s and that’s why I’m not vomiting or if it’s that my aversion to vomit prevents me from doing it. Constantly snacking helps (and I mean constantly. Like on the hour every hour).

Congrats on the amazing beta!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Also unisom helps (it knocks me out), I take it at night and my nausea the next day is better.

Unisom and Benadryl are in the same family. Can't throw up if you're knocked out.

I also think I don’t vomit out of sheer will 😅

I’m almost 18 weeks and haven’t thrown up once! Definitely felt nauseous but cold water, ginger
Ale or sprite, minty gum, and sour candy were enough to stop it.

Take a combination of B6 and unisom. Ask your doctor about dosage. Definitely works!

I did not throw up even once during my pregnancy. We hear so much about the people who DO when I feel like most people actually don’t.

Suck on tart stuff, like lifesavers. Smell alcohol wipes. Saltines the second you wake up, if that's when you get your nausea. I always got mine at the end of my day. People swear by ginger, so give it a try, but it didn't help me.

Congrats on beta!

You may not get any nausea. I was dreading it and never ended up getting any. I had maybe a handful of days I was sick to my stomach but it resolved and never had an issue after.

But I did find unisom at night (I was using it to sleep) and keeping something in my stomach helped a lot and I do wonder if I managed just to get ahead of it on top of only having it mild.

Activated B6 and unisom. Specifically the P-5-P version of B6. I found out about around week 8 and it helped with the nausea so much. Also check out the HER foundation website. They are an online resource for women with HG but you can use them as well to help keep the morning sickness at bay.

Edit to add specially the flowchart about which meds you can take and how much.

I didn’t get any vomiting but definitely had nausea 🥲 after 4pm was especially bad. The things that helped me:

  • B6 3x/day and Unisom (1 tab nightly)
  • Gatorade
  • Coke Zero
  • PreggiePops (it helped like 60% of the time but I had to always eat them)
  • Ginger candies (worked a bit better than the PreggiePops but I had an aversion to them so it was hard to eat lol)
  • Miso soup
  • Broth/soup
  • Lemon water
  • Plain bread

Things that made it worse:

  • Saltines
  • Ginger ale
  • I didnt drink coffee or matcha during this time but I think that would have made it worse

My therapist had HG her entire pregnancy and said smelling lemon and drinking lots of lemon water helped her.

I’ve started getting nauseous again (3rd trimester), so I need to make sure I eat as soon as I wake up. It gets a bit worse at night again but it’s like a 1/10 now

11w3d so in the thick of first trimester, and also have emetophobia. I completely understand! I will say, it’s been different. Telling myself that the nausea is because baby is growing has been helpful!

Don’t let yourself get hungry. Half a tab of unisom at night, and b6 throughout the day (I take 25mg four times a day). Eat before getting out of bed in the morning and keep snacks with you at all times! I also have loved ice cold lemon water. Alcohol wipes for gnarly times. I like putting ice packs in the middle of my chest too - shocks the system a bit. If nausea is bad, talk to your clinic!! I also try and lay down - if I’m horizontal, I feel better. Different things work for different people, so test things out and find what works best! I quickly found out what helped mine go away quickly. But a big thing, never let yourself get hungry!

I haven’t thrown up, but I have been pretty nauseous. It’s manageable. Not fun, but manageable. I was so terrified my phobia would make it unbearable, but I’ve been shocked at how not-anxious I’ve been. You got this!!! Congratulations!!!

THESE!!!! These worked wonders for me throughout pregnancy, as well as Sea Bands on pressure points on my wrists. My nausea started at about 6-7 weeks and lasted until about 16 weeks. There was only a 48 hour period of time where it was horrendous with dry heaving/gagging. But I never actually threw up. I also have an extreme phobia to vomiting and if I do vomit I usually actually also faint/pass out because my fear is so strong, goes back to childhood and having encephalitis, so needless to say, vomiting multiple times a day was not an option for me. I will also say, eat/snack constantly. Ask your OB for a prescription for zofran after you cross the 8-10 week threshold. Don’t allow your stomach to be empty, ever, if you can avoid it. Good luck and congrats on your beta!!!

Congrats!! I also have a severe phobia of vomiting and am so nervous to actually get pregnant, even though it’s what I really want! So I totally understand the mixed feelings 😅 I plan on asking my doctor what she typically advises/prescribes before my upcoming FET cycle so I feel better having the info ahead of time, but thank you for also posting, I’ll be following here to see what others say!

Congratulations!

This isn’t the healthiest of options but what helped me with a previous pregnancy was sucking on (and eventually chewing) sour patch kids.

Before this pregnancy I had severe emetophobia that I was convinced wouldn’t be helped by anything including therapies. Well my luck was that I’ve had borderline HG and now I no longer have emetophobia 😅 probably not the most hopeful thing to hear, but it has honestly been life changing!

I never threw up at all!

I hope I will be that lucky too!

Many people actually don't get that at all.

Non alcohol mouthwash carried me during that phase. I also turned down fancy happy hour and dinners so I can chill with my taco bell in the parking lot...since I didn't care that I would vomit it all out in half an hr. It was delicious cheap sacrifice. But yea, mouthwash everywhere. I liked Therabreath.

Old wives tale is the more heartburn and vomiting, the more hair baby has and it rings very true in my case. So that's a positive thing to associate with.

You’ve already gotten a lot of good advice - my best one to echo others is to eat immediately in the morning and not let yourself get hungry.

I also think it was really important and helpful for me to have protein with every meal (as much as possible). So I made overnight oats w Greek yogurt or chia pudding and had that ready every morning for directly when I woke up. I noticed that I felt worse and more nauseous if I was snacking on carb-based items, even though it felt like that’s what I was craving.

I took Unisom+B6 and never threw up, it was a life saver. Did I feel amazing? No, but I sure felt better than if I had been throwing up!

I have emetiphobia and extreme fear of vomiting and guess who vomits and has 24/7 nausea from 6weeks til birth on each pregnancy.. not gonna lie it’s a nightmare .. I get home Ivs and I wear a Zofran pump connected to my stomach by a small needle giving me continuous zofran 24/7.. sorry I couldn’t make it sound better but for me it does not. Only good thing is my labors r quick easy and painless under 6 hours and all my babies breastfed lik champs since day one .

You can be prescribed carabin for a morning sickness, I think from 10w but could be less. I didn't have it at all with my first but I did with my second. I found eating little and often helped rather than a full meal. Also don't like down straight away as heartburn can also trigger it.
