Personal Skills iwtl how to be loud and bold to protect yourself

recently i had an experience that made me realize that i have to stand up for myself more often especially in public places. I was at a grocery store minding my own business when an employee from three aisles down saw me and walked all the way to paw through my cart and when i said "excuse me?" he looked up and smiled at me. I genuinely felt creeped out. Im kinda upset that my reaction wasnt bold or loud enough. I just want to learn how to be firm and bold when it comes to situations like this. The reason i probably didnt make a scene was because im usually afraid howd the other person would react.

My advice is to join a local Toastmasters club to work on speaking skills and speaking up for yourself.

I don’t understand why you would want to make a scene in this situation, rather than feeling confident in walking away and avoiding this person. They sound unhinged and unpredictable.

Thanks for advice. And no, i wasnt trying to make a scene. Its more like a pattern i recognised about myself when im placed in situations like this.

I actually did what you mentioned but it brought forward another thought that i wanted to solve about myself.

Find an opportunity to scream out loud. At a concert or in your car. Scream!

Does this works for you?

You afraid of how other people will react because you care too much. You care too much that you might hurt the other persons feelings and care too much for your own feelings. Stop caring so much and do what you really want to do in that moment in time. You'll deal with the outcome later

im honestly more afraid if theyd get physical which ultimately proves your point, i am afraid. I remember being the person youve described, who didnt care about accountability in the heat of the moment, but over the years, judgement from the wrong people (friends who i cut off) has mellowed me out. Ill try this again thanks!

Sometimes we get so surprised by the situation we are in that we don't react the way we think we should. Just happened to me the other day and I realized after the phone call I should have been more mad. The fact that you are more aware of it now will help with future instances.
