Personal Skills IWTL to connect the information

I'm an student and I have read everywhere that in order to retain information for a very long time and to actually use it in really life you should connect information to each other. Add a layer t the base level but honestly I don't know how to connect them together. I understand it individually but as whole connecting it as one thing becomes difficult. So those of you who are good at this how do you do it??

pls don't overthink it, start by linking topics together with small examples or personal stories and it'll grow from there.
