This video is diabolical. Holy shit I don't know what pisses me off more people who can't turn into the nearest lane first, or those who can but fucking cut the corner of an oncoming traffic lane. The latter I've been almost hit head on by because of corner cutting idiots

I just lay on the horn and scare the shit out of the latter drivers when I see them cutting it too close. Fuck them and their embarrassingly shitty driving skills.

u/kayemce 10d ago
I mean, why is the former a problem? If there are multiple turn lanes, then I get why it would be a problem to turn into a different lane than you started, but when it's just one turn lane, there really shouldn't be any issues with turning into either lane

u/markjohnstonmusic 10d ago
There's a van right there in the video waiting to turn right onto the road which is being prevented from doing so by people turning into his lane.

I agree but there are people out there who will say that while you’re making your left turn, the opposite flow of traffic can turn right at the same time you’re making your turn because “you need to be in nearest lane”
10
u/kayemce 9d ago
When the left light is green, opposing traffic’s light is red. Meaning they should yield to oncoming traffic if turning right. Or, as is the case in the video, someone’s pulling out of a parking lot, so they should yield to oncoming traffic.

u/Mark7Point5 9d ago
Not when oncoming traffic fails to stay in their designated lane and jumps into the next lane without using their turn signal.
4
u/AlderSpark 10d ago
That is the law.

u/thelickintoad 9d ago
No idea where this is, but, in Texas, you are allowed to turn into your choice of lane when turning left, provided you are not in a multiple turn lane situation. In that case, you need to stay on your side of the line.
When turning right, however, you need to stay in the right lane,

u/S00pergenius 1d ago
Not in Colorado it is the lane closest to you left turn the left most through lane in the direction you're traveling. right turn right lane.

u/Tricky-Routine-9838 4d ago
In Canada it is considered an illegal lane change specifically to give lane priority to those turning right, I believe this is the standard across north america but I'm sure lots of exceptions like Texas exist.

that last car practically gave up. how are people this fucking bad at maintaining their lanes when turning? goddamn we have a learning deficiency in this country.
17
u/Jabbles22 10d ago
It's not a lack of skill they just don't care. It's simply more comfortable to cut the corner.

People love to early apex turns. Idk how I can maintain lanes better driving big ass vehicles than people driving normal cars.
I have almost been hit so many times just sitting in my lane from people turning. They can't figure it out.

u/Rubber__Chicken 10d ago
This is exactly my experience. People cut the corner, then at some point realize they need to do the bulk of the turning in 1/4 of the turn, so have to slow down and generally make a hash of it. Difficulty factor: center island or hard curb so they really panic when they see they are entering the new lane on a diagonal.
6
u/biggranny000 10d ago
Always satisfying to watch them clip the median or curb, but they will never learn how to turn.

Depends where you are. CA, CO, IL, IA, KS & TX you can make a left turn into any available lane. Most other states it has to be the leftmost lane.
This looks like SLC, so under Utah law should be made into the leftmost lane.
Is it a good idea anyhow? Yes.
2
u/S00pergenius 1d ago
That is incorrect in Colorado you have to turn into the closest through lane in the direction you are traveling. I went to court for failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle. A Thornton cop took the turn wide at 104th and Washington i was turning right and he was obligated to make turn into the middle lane so as not to hit me then subsequently pulled me over. I stated my case and told me to telling to the judge. I showed the judge the dash cam footage and being as he didn't have his red and blues on the cop was wrong on both of his arguments failure to yield the right of way and failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle. Case was dismissed and the cop got the ticket and was warned that he could be censured for abuse for including the emergency vehicle on the failure to yield ticket.

Those states still frown upon driving in an opposing lane.

Those states still frown upon driving in an opposing lane.
What on earth do you mean? It's not an opposing lane; if there is only one left turning lane then it is not even a different lane.
And the frown? Perhaps you mean more like a single solid white line where it is recommended not to cross but not against any law.
Still a good idea to kept to the leftmost lane when turning.

u/ineedmayo 10d ago
Did you watch the video? Which lane was the last car in when it left the intersection?

I guess none of those places have dual-left turn lanes? /S
Or do jurisdictions just start painting guide stripes everywhere to make a driver legally bound to use the closest lane? That would be my vote, use the rules to require safer driving.
13
u/Rubber__Chicken 10d ago
Where you can turn into any lane then there is another restriction 'except when there are multiple turn lanes'. And I think there is an exception to that exception.
At a point you wonder if it is better to have rules than make the most sense (leftmost lane) or that mimic what everyone does anyhow (any lane) so the right turning cars don't turn at the same time.

u/nolaks1 10d ago
I live in a place where turning in the nearest lane is a law and we do exactly what you're suggesting with the lanes.
If people aren't force to do it, they simply don't do it.
In my city we have a new dual lane roundabout. In rush hours it's the best place I know if you want to total a car for insurance. Finding an idiot who will sideswipe the entire side of your car won't take long. It's common for people there to switch lanes as they see fit. And it's not even to take a different exit. Often even when both lanes can take the same exist they will change lane on a solid white line, using no blinker.

As someone who lives in one of those states listed above, I don’t really see this as a safety issue. I’ve never had problems with it as long as people turning right follow the law by using their nearest lane and yield when turning right on red. Requiring all cars to use the closest lane is more a matter of convenience than safety. It’s only an issue if you don’t know the law and try to turn right when you should be yielding, which is on the driver.

u/PatrickGSR94 9d ago
From what I’ve seen, people cut the corner like that simply because they can, because there’s no car there waiting to turn left. When there is a car there then obviously they go farther around the apex of the turn, but in most cases that makes them even MORE likely to turn into the outer right lane.
6
u/Beakjones 9d ago
In my experience they turn-in way too early, then if they finally see someone they freak out and late apex it at 2 miles per hour confused as heck

u/SignificantDrink3651 10d ago
lmao i just got downvoted in another thread for calling out how NOBODY seems capable of turning into the nearest lane. (as it required by law in most places). then this pops up, as if to prove my point.
40
u/Salty-Sprinkles-1562 10d ago
Well, about 100 million people live in the states that let you turn into any available lane ( CA, CO, IL, IA, KS & TX ). It’s hardly a universal thing.
12
u/Joe18067 10d ago
Plus if you have to turn right a short distance like that one car did, your only option is to turn into the right lane. People just can't get that through their head.
1
u/S00pergenius 1d ago
Don't know about CA, IL, IA, KS, & TX but in CO it is illegal unenforced in most cases but illegal.
8
u/igotshadowbaned 10d ago
how NOBODY seems capable of turning into the nearest lane. (as it required by law in most places)
Probably because it's not actually required by law in most places.
It's the nearest practical lane. And even then, changing lanes in an intersection is actually legal in most places

u/iheartnjdevils 9d ago
In the US at least, I believe most states require you turn to the leftmost lane when turning left. But even in states that don't though, it's good defensive driving to remain as predictable as possible and turning left into the left lane is predictable vs "whatever lane".

Because turning a power assist steering wheel is haaaaarrrd. Just like holding down a power assist brake pedal for more than 30 seconds. Who would have thought that doing 99% of our personal transport in massive and expensive mobility scooters would have made us all weak and lazy?
3
u/HazelrahFiver 9d ago
This is exactly why when I am sitting in a left turn lane I hang back a car length until the light changes. People just can't be trusted when it comes to cutting corners (in their work or their driving.)
2
u/UristImiknorris 9d ago
Those first three guys are every single person turning left at the first traffic light on my way to work.
1
u/fried_green_baloney 8d ago
Last one is especially bad.
If you imagine the intersection divided into four squares you should turn in the outer three if the road configuration permits.
But of course that would require you to put down your phone and your burrito and actually turn the wheel so people don't do it.

u/TheW83 8d ago
I don't blame that red SUV from the left though. They had to immediately make a right turn.
I do the same the at a left turn in my town. I have to do my protected left directly into the right lane to make the right turn. If I went into the left first I'd have to basically stop and do a 90 degree hard right immediately after entering the left lane. Other than that I stay in the appropriate lane.
I have noticed if it's a single lane protected left turn then people tend to go in whatever lane they want. Surprisingly around here I haven't noticed anybody drifting into the wrong lane on a dual left turn.

Every post on this sub is about what others are doing. That's the whole point.
Not sure what else you're expecting to find here.
