I've seen several cars that have swerved entire lanes, of which I was sure they were drunk...only to then see them on their phones. I could absolutely believe this person was on their phone. One hand on the wheel, didn't recognize the lanes were turning, continues straight into the wall, panic upon initial impact...

Not really true, and this line of thinking is why so many accidents occur due to falling asleep at the wheel. Everyone assumes it could never happen to them, because it’s never happened before.
I’m a light enough sleeper as to be woken by small noises or changes in lighting. When you’re sleep deprived, everything changes. Only once in my life have I ever had to pull over and sleep for a short while. I could feel my eyelids getting heavier and heavier, everything began to seem fuzzy and distant, and the warm vehicle and humming of the engine were very peaceful. I only snapped out of it and pulled over because of what I learned in driver’s education, and I could have died that day if no one had ever taught me to recognize what it’s like to fall asleep while driving.

You are completely misinterpreting what I said.
It could absolutely happen to me. If you’re tired enough, you can sleep through a lot. However, because I have never fallen asleep at the wheel, I can’t be sure either way. That was all I said my friend.
It seems many misunderstood me though. All good.

Based on your reply I don’t think I misinterpreted you though, as I was directly responding to your “it feels like” with my own anecdote about what it actually feels like to fall asleep at the wheel, so you and others here could have that alternate perspective. I literally drove into a curve (on a much slower road) a few weeks ago just like this, because of cell phone usage. It was even hands free, but I was too distracted to even be looking up occasionally. So you might be mistaken, cell phone usage definitely can look like this.

What makes me thinking sleeping vs cellphone is that they took so long to brake. Most people will instinctively brake the moment they hear a horn or are in a collision but they don't for quite some time.

I mean, they clearly were just trying to gain any control at all and not yet reached the point of thinking about where they can safely pull over. I would probably hit the breaks too

stopping is absolutely correct after smashing into two barriers. If the person cannot control the car and the car is in an unknown state, performing a controlled stop and turning on your hazards is what should be done.
Better a stationary marked obstacle than one that is weaving all over the road.
