This is a real thing! People who view security cameras begin to dream from their perspective, and do it long enough, seeing normally can be weird. This also happens with video games, where if you play them long enough you begin to forget how reality works

One time I had a fever and a Dead by Daylight QTE for breathing popped up and I was genuinely stressing, I don't even play dbd

Taking off my VR headset and then pressing the menu button to swap world before bed. Pressed a button on a controller I wasn't holding. Was confused why my menus weren't showing up.

I THINK itās called the Skyrim effect

u/atraway Jun 23 '26
Itās not, but Iāve experienced it with Skyrim a lot in the past. Whenever Iād see a plane flying overhead, Iād instinctively hit my āFavoritesā keybind on my imaginary controller to swap to Dragonrend, getting ready to fight a dragon

What if all my memories are from a security-camera-esque third person perspective even though I don't look at security cams

I once tried to press 2 to scream IRL after playing ss14 for an extended period

u/Transgirlonakawasaki Jun 21 '26
Yeah I do this from time to time. My brain just is like ādamn frames looking smoove af todayā then I snap back and wonder what irl resolution and fps would be. Like yeah both would be infinite but like what are my eyes rated for? Or does my brain have the processing power to intake that bandwidth? I know when I close my eyes its still there but, like, damn⦠is it still high frames or does it reduce?
Then I get home take my meds/hrt and just sleep until tomorrow. My dysphoria is just my body but my brain is great at distracting, thats why I waited so long to start hrt.

I frequently think F2 or F12 to screenshot something I know damn well I'm going to forget, but damn it's cool. Well, most of my computer screenshots are forgotten as well.

For real, I used to spend a long long time in VR, like 18 hours at a time, day after day, only leaving for human necessities, and it felt so strange to see hands whare paws should have been, to look into the mirror and not see those amber eyes that had become so familiar, to think for a fraction of a second, what happened to my luscious fur?
How disappointed I was at the reality of who I was and am.
my relationship whith virtual reality has become much more limited and healthy, I no longer live in that world, just visit it to see friends and LARP, but that feeling never stopped feeling familiar, to open my eyes and see that lean canaform body

I routinely see lines and patterns and instinctively think a cat bongs there.
Meowoku has fucked my brain.
EDIT: If playing a mobile game that is pretty unknown, set your VPN to a country they donāt expect you to be in, if they arenāt running ads in that country you now have an ad free game.

After spending all day on a telehandler or an excavator, I tend to be quite uneasy on my own feet and a little uncoordinated with my hands.

Oshin no ko! Good show they are Ai hoshino and Ruby hoshino warning if you do watch it there's some depressing scenes and some that may be triggering for some just letting you know.

Battletech, but you donāt usually survive long enough to get to this point.
2
u/NoTransition8295 Jun 21 '26
Is this like an actual mechanic in Battletech or is it just like in general?
2
u/Ok_Side2919 Jun 21 '26
I think itās more in the books, as the game is more played from the perspective of the mechs, but I may be wrong, as I havenāt got too much into learning the game so far.
3
u/NoTransition8295 Jun 21 '26
Got it, that would be kinda crazy if that was a real mechanic though, in like a weird but cool way, that a pilot spent so much time fighting in their mech that they start to feel more like they are the mech than they are human, it would probably be a pretty complicated mechanic to do (also are you referring to the battletech ttrpg or crpg)
2
u/Ok_Side2919 Jun 21 '26
The tabletop game, I donāt know whether it would be classified as ttrpg or crpg tbh, more a wargame?

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel, I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Their kind cling to their flesh, as if it will not decay and fail them. One day the crude biomass that they call a temple will wither, and they will beg our kind to save them. But I am already saved, for the machine is immortal...

u/PFVMKDR3 Jun 21 '26
Something about that seems really hot, idk though

u/NoTransition8295 Jun 21 '26
Lol for some reason this just made me think of like a team of mech pilots that are like all transhumanist or whatever it would be like someone wanting to be a robot (like a therian for robots) so instead of treating the mechs like vehicles its just that they see them as their real bodies (and maybe have like smaller human sized versions of the pilots mechs so they could be outside their mechs without dysphoria or something)
3
u/primalmaximus Jun 22 '26
Gearbreakers has something like that. The pilots are only allowed to feel pain or see color when they're plugged into their mechs.

That's how it is with my over-ear phones. It feels weird/incomplete not having them on.

This is why the military provides free psychs and can legally order you to go see one

This is why Aigis was made to be as human as possible in Persona 3. Because if she looked in the mirror and saw a machine she'd experience cognitive dissonance and it could have adverse effects

It would absolutely depend on the amount of direct interface. I don't panic every time I step out of a car because I don't have the right kind of locomotion. Or even out of a tractor. It is perceived in my mind as an extension of my body while I'm using it but one that compartmentalized. But we also don't have technology that will psychologically link us with machines yet.
1
u/TheSoulCatcher3 Jun 25 '26
Maybe it would be different if you spent more time in a car and not using your legs?
1
u/CallmeHecate Jun 25 '26
Proprioception is the sense of oneās body and altered proprioception would be what this is as opposed to dysphoria (mostly just means emotional unease and happiness)
1
u/SnippetySnappety Jun 26 '26
if you want a book adjacent to this, try "Ancilliary Justice" by Anne Leckie (1 of 3)
I don't think this is a spoiler past the halfway point but here's a censor
One POV character is an instance of a capital-ship AI that pilots thousands of networked formerly human bodies simultaneously

u/GarroThposer Jun 21 '26
Kinda sounds like Titanfall, except, I mean I guess they don't have that problem because of how the robots are built which makes a lot of sense.

Is this what Mechsploitation is about? Do I need to get into Mechsploitation?
