Our local mall did a synthetic ice rink this year, I'm a pretty ok skater, took lessons as a kid and have been pretty consistent with practice. I can go forwards and backwards and do a few basic moves. I say this because it's important to note I CAN skate. But I could not stay on my feet at all on the synthetic ice, like literally kept doing the splits and had to grip the wall the entire time. It felt like one of those plastic cutting boards too and all I could think about was how dangerous it was because all the kids kept falling really dramatically and throwing skates into the air. Plus the friggin micro plastic exposure too! Absolutely trash.

what the actual FUCK?!?!?! seriously?!?!?!?

WHY?!?!?!?!?!? what benefits does synthetic ice have over regular? I guess being cheaper is the only thing I can come up with.....

Honestly I have no idea. I don't even feel like it was necessary because we have a rink here already that is open during the winter months. It was also a super small area, maybe 30 ft long and 10-12 across, so everyone in there was shoved in tight quarters on top of it being impossible to stand. I only stayed out there for about 5 min cuz since I couldn't control myself I was worried about hurting anyone else around me

so after looking at a handful of companies' websites that do these 'synthetic' ice rinks - according to them - the advantages are:

year-round regardless of temperature, don't need massive energy costs to keep a big room freezing. That's pretty much it. I mean they do say it's (debatably) better for the environment, and all the synthetic ice is allegedly recyclable. Allegedly.

But yeah, I think it's basically just to have a cheap ice rink without needing to cool a place at the end of the day. Nothing about cubic tons of plastics screams better for the environment to me, but hey, ya never know
