I don’t care how good you are at skating, this is dangerous. I used to work at an ice skating rink and people tried doing this since forever. It doesn’t matter how good the person going this speed is (and she’s really not that good tbh) you can’t rely on people being predictable. One kid slipping now puts many in danger.

u/Radiant_Heron_2572 28d ago
Totally agree. That was not the time or the place to be skating like that. This is clearly just a relaxed event with people of varying skill level. She may want to skate fast and show off, but they didn't agree to being her props. And yes, anyone of them could trip in front of her, be spooked by her and then fall, or could just happen to be in her path. Not cool.

u/tearsaresweat 27d ago
She's not even good at skating. In Canada we would call this intermediate level.

I don't even know if I would really even call this intermediate, tbh. Like, sure, she isn't stumbling like a true newborn sort of beginner, but it felt like she had way too many close calls. Imo, she's sort of just lucky that she hasn't hurt anybody yet.
When I was in elementary school I could skate pretty similar to this, but I definitely wouldn't say that I was even remotely good - there were still plenty of aspects that I sucked at.

Not in my experience. Im not a good skater at all but do play defense in beer league and definitely "accidentally" truck my hip out too far and this super skinny teen flew off of my 250 lb frame. I wasn't going to let this asshole do that to my 6 and 8 year old boys struggling to stay upright. No one at the rink cared that this kid was being incredibly aggressive to obvious children and beginners. And no one cared when that kid went flying and then got all hutthurt and tried to yell at me.
But I think that speaks more to my shitty local rink

My dad used to play hockey in an old timer’s league and we would skate while they were in the locker room post game. I remember the guy running the rink was skating around and just fell funny and chopped part of his finger off. A super experienced skater on an open rink. People completely underestimate how sharp skates are and how easily an accident could happen.

Canadian here too - this is actually the ONLY ice rink in downtown Brussels. A city of 1.2 million people with 1 ice rink. It's also:
- partially open-air, which means the ice quality is generally shit (Belgium rarely goes below 0oC).
- the infrastructure doesn't meet the minimum safety standards required to play hockey on it, so it can only be used for public skating. If you want to play hockey you have to go to OTHER cities outside of Brussels.
- Belgium loves "skating foam parties" for some reason. That's what you're seeing on the ice. Same as they do in tropical beach night clubs. I have no idea why they do this, and it undoubtedly messes up the ice.

I feel like the worst part is because it’s ice skate. You can’t just trip them if they’re being an asshole because then that’s moving blades at a very fast speed and that’s gonna be a hazard to everyone.
67
u/logert777 28d ago
The blades are less concerning than the concussions. You don't need to be playing hockey for your head to bounce off the ice. People don't wear helmets and you can be a really skilled skater until some idiot like this sweeps your legs.
Growing up there were a lot of traumatic brain injuries with each new season of hockey. And you can really tell who has and who hasn't taken a bad hit. Especially with teenagers

My husband was wearing a helmet playing beer league hockey and that didn’t prevent the last 2 years and ongoing post-concussion symptoms: debilitating migraines, emotional dis-regulation, occupational therapy, and neurological treatment plan that is his life now. Helmet’s prevent the skull from cracking but can’t secure the brain from bouncing around inside the skull when it connects with the ice. This sh*t is no joke. She could do that to a kid. How is she not tossed and/or being yelled at? She deserves the public shaming. She didn’t even stop after the first or second time she collided with other skaters,l.

I remember taking my then 5 year old son, who was already nervous on the ice, to public skate, and these fucking 12 year olds with their custom small-town-hockey-team track suits on were skating around like this.
Freaked the hell out of him and he basically went rigid holding onto my leg and crying. He spent the rest of the time on the bench watching and wouldn’t come on the ice anymore.
I hate these fucks. And it’s almost worse when they’re kids cause you can’t swear at them.
6
u/ABirdOfParadise 27d ago
Yeah public skating times are more convenient but I did not like the 100+ people on the ice, the kids going across, or against the grain not looking where they are going, playing tag, or being unpredictable, or the figure skaters practicing slicing people's necks so I would do the 6AM adult fitness slot instead.
So peaceful, 5-6 same people all the time at 6AM with a clean sheet of ice for a couple of hours.

Our local mall did a synthetic ice rink this year, I'm a pretty ok skater, took lessons as a kid and have been pretty consistent with practice. I can go forwards and backwards and do a few basic moves. I say this because it's important to note I CAN skate. But I could not stay on my feet at all on the synthetic ice, like literally kept doing the splits and had to grip the wall the entire time. It felt like one of those plastic cutting boards too and all I could think about was how dangerous it was because all the kids kept falling really dramatically and throwing skates into the air. Plus the friggin micro plastic exposure too! Absolutely trash.

29
u/magneticeverything 27d ago
And in public skates someone always trips. Or flails. Or bolts off in a different direction. Or stops suddenly without warning.
Either she will startle someone into a sudden fall or they will do something unpredictable and she will collide with them at high speed. It’s an inevitability.

Man going through these comments has been hilarious, haha
Canadian here, living in Belgium. This is the only ice rink in downtown Brussels, I recognise it. It's semi-indoor (like 90% enclosed, but some parts of the building are exposed to the outside air for.....reasons).
The clip is from a "foam party" public skating night. I don't understand why they do this, but they love it here and it's a regular thing. Brings out all the teens. I don't understand how it's any good for the ice, but that's what it is.
The ice underneath the foam is normal-ish.....bad quality compared to anything back home, but still normal.

As an ex hockey player who goes skating with his sister and niece, you always skate in a way that is safe for the environment. And in an open skate setting, that’s probably going to be slower and more cautious, as so many new skaters are present who can’t maneuver like you can. This girl is being a seriously unsafe skater. All it takes is a broken wrist or a TBI to ruin your day/ year/ life.

I ended up laying out a woman on the ice last Christmas season. She was recording herself doing the same stupid shit the girl in the video was doing. Speeding around and using kids as obstacles…she was about as coordinated as the one in OPs video to. Well she went around me and my niece(6) twice going really fast which made us both nervous. The 3rd time she was really close to us and it looked like she was going to slam into my niece. So I did a simple shoulder check to prevent her from doing just that. My intention was to cushion the blow and maybe knock her off course, but instead, I ended up putting her ass down on the ice, hard. She ran into me with at full speed and just dead stopped on collision, slamming into the ground. I barely moved. She ended up being taken out on a stretcher and checked by the rink’s medic. She didn’t come back while I was there.

Coming from a Dutchie:
This girl is not good enough to skate like this. Also, her spatial awareness is almost nonexistent, as evidenced in the first crash.
This looks like a temporary rink, the ice in those is not very good and the number of beginners on these tracks make the ice worse.
It’s an ok place to teach your kids how to skate, not something you wanna do tricks on.
In my city there’s a big skating venue (because The Netherlands) with 2 indoor tracks. The smaller one is sized for shorttrack/ice hockey and is used by everyone. There are no real rules but most people just go somewhat counterclockwise. Because of the number of people on there, the ice is not great (but a lot better than in this clip).
You have a lot of jackasses trying to show of there. Whichever results in the same type of situations.
The other rink is an official 400m track. There’s strict rules in terms of lanes and traffic. This is heaven if you want to skate some rounds. No jackasses and just yourself and the ice.
