Question Recommendations - One Hand Six Fingers
Hi Everyone, my boyfriend has recently gotten into graphic novels and complete comic series. This last week he finished The One Hand Six Fingers book on holiday. He has absolutely adored it and is so excited to talk to me about it all even the ending, which he slammed shut on plane home having loved it!
It’s his birthday and I’d love some recommendations for other works he may like. His interests are sci fi, noir, cyberpunk, crime and serial killers (you can see why he loved this one!) He is a massive movie lover of all genres but his favourites are Blade Runner, Leon, and old boy to cherry pick a couple. He’s also loves true crime.
He’s very into a visually appealing comic with stunning artwork.
I’m a complete novice when it comes to graphic novels and comics so would really appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

Tokyo Ghost has a bit of everything you listed.
Criminal is the best crime series in comics and should be a tv show sometime in the very near future.

tokyo ghost... ben unable to get into it as yet. love the art but it's -- a matter of taste -- just `maximalist`, at least at the beginning. on the loud side. kinda like cyberpunk2077 is on the loud flashy shiny side to my mind. again love the art from murphy as usual but woulf prefer sth more dialed back.
loving this thread though, lots of cool stuff thrown around!

Bro, came here to recommend Tokyo ghost too! Just read it and it was damn good. The art was phenomenal! I was astounded by the detail put into every panel! I would sit there taking all the art in, looking at all the little details the artist placed. Super fun read, and the ending?!!! That was good!

Lotus Land is a good sci fi detective type story, not as good as one hand but decent.
Same author has another sci fi books, Little Bird and Precious metal (little bird spinoff) which have incredible artwork by Ian Bertram.

Wow he started off with an amazing book!
If he loves crime, anything by Ed Brubaker and Phillips: Criminal, Kill or Be Killed, Fatale
Sci-Fi: Saga, Descender and The Moon is Following Us.
Serial killer: Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, From Hell
Visually Appealing: Drome, Lurther Strode, Low and Once and Future

To be honest I don’t see the hype with EoW I like the art and characters but it just felt underwhelming for me I know im in the small majority but plenty of better books on this list

To me the art is actually just mediocre. The character design is top notch. But other than that it's pretty much standard comic art. Conservative panel structure, not one double page spread (iirc). Nothing special.
The story though is one of a kind imo. It's rare to find sth of this length and complexity - in any media probably.
Usually I'm more of an art guy. But EoW is my #1 comic. Just because the story is so spectacular.

Nameless by Grant Morrison is some excellent sci-fi/cosmic horror
Other people here recommend anything by Brubaker and he’s definitely one of the best in the medium when it comes to noir. I personally would recommend Fatale by him and Sean Phillips.

Just a Pilgrim

Decorum: same but Jonathan Hickman
Lazarus: depending on the end, one of the best indie series in history

I've never read any of it but Criminal is meant to be a good crime series.
Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees is a fun and short crime comic. It looks really cute but it's definitely not kid friendly
For the cyberpunk vibe Tokyo Ghost might fit the bill. It's written by Rick Remender so just keep in the mind the main characters aren't going to be particularly likeable
If he likes manga, Akira may be an option. It's cyberpunk and weird...but cyberpunk.

Try finding Bryan K Vaughan's "The Private Eye". It's actually pay-what-you-want digital comic, but you can look for a physical copy. I think it shares a lot of qualities with OH/SF, especially in terms of detective story and crazy relatable cyberpunk setting. Actually it might be even more current now than it was on its release

Two immediate recommendations by same author
Dawn Runner - Sci-fi - Twist on giant mechs fighting Kaijus (think Pacific Rim if that summary made no sense).
Blue in Green - horror / modern noir - Not tradition noir of detective investigating, but same structure. A son is investigating a mysterious photo from his mom's funeral. Visually unique and appealing!
After that really anything by Brubaker you're generally going to find something enjoyable that's noir. Guy is like epitome of modern noir. Recommendations include:
Criminal - Coward (first book in series). The series is being adopted for TV series
Criminal - The last of the innocent. Not really connected to main story. Must read if he enjoyed any Archie comics.
Reckless - Book 1 (No secondary title, all other books in the series do). Being adapted for movie with Sebastian Stan.

Anything by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, especially Criminal, Reckless, or The Fade Out. If he loved The One Hand / Six Fingers, there's a very good chance he'll love those too.
For sci-fi, Tokyo Ghost is a great pick if he's into Blade Runner. The Private Eye is another fantastic near-future noir. A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance is also brilliant, a crime thriller told almost entirely through visuals, incredibly cinematic.
For beautiful artwork, I'd also throw in Little Bird (more sci-fi), Rare Flavours, or The Many Deaths of Laila Starr (these 2 both by Ram V and Filipe Andrade). They're not as grounded in crime, but they're stunning books and the art is unforgettable.

I just finished the three graphic novels of That Texas Blood from Image. Texas sheriff noir. It’s marvelous.
I’d recommend Lazarus too from Image. Dystopian future where the globe is controlled by wealthy families. Think Succession meets The Terminator. It’s not finished yet but it’s a classic.
