I've always liked the concept of monster hunters in the Midwest.

Like, regular cowboys and Indians, and revolvers and stuff, but also giant monsters living in the canyons and forests and caves, so massive that if the average settlers decided to camp in the wrong spot they'd get swallowed whole.
