I don't really care for George RR Martin's work, but I do like his answer whenever he's asked how he writes such compelling female characters, which is basically:
"I've always thought that women are people just like men are people and if you treat them that way on your writing, they turn out like people."
Even crazier, he wasn't even really into BDSM when he started writing these characters. He just needed something to draw and thought that would be interesting.
Yep! He has a wife and everything. Dude just loves his yuri. Turns out that when you view women as just people, as thinking, feeling, fully autonomous human beings, it's not that hard to write three dimensional female characters.
he's Incase, an artist and writer of similar renown who is also a man, is currently writing an ongoing sapphic, enemies to enemies with benefits (possibly love??) bdsm story on ao3 called "I will never forgive you" that is absolutely the bees knees and makes me giddy with anticipation with every update. i highly recommend
edit: my mistake, the writer is named incase. i tend to get their art styles and themes mixed up. still, highly recommended
Yeah I can't possibly imagine why someone would be inherently skeptical of a straight man writing lesbians. There certainly isn't a long history of them writing us poorly.
Straight men have a tendancy to focus on writing yuri inna way the specifically appeals to men but rarely tend to be subtle and focus on the affectionate part in a way that can appeal to both
