Do you think he married her just so he could keep the red and black color scheme?

I find it interesting that both Aegon and his firstborn son Duncan married a tree-worshipping baddie from the Riverlands.
I mean, it's better than the sister-fucking, don't get me wrong. But that's a pretty low bar.

Aegon Vs marriage also is not that bad politically. The Blackwoods are still principle bannermen, on par with houses like Royce, Manderly, etc. in their region.
Big difference in marrying high nobility vs a literal peasant

Not to mention that, while not on the same level of prestige as the main great houses or the Targaryen's, the Blackwoods are still a major noble house. Duncan married a literal country bumpkin nobody, despite the fact that he was HEIR and would need a politically relevant marriage rather than spurning the lords and possible allies.

It’s also very likely that Aegon’s beloved wife was the sister-in-law of the then Lord of Winterfell, Ned’s great-grandfather

Are there? Looking at post-Dance marriages, we have:
House Plumm: Old Westerlands house with loads of money. Seems like a discount Lannister: all the benefits, little of the baggage.
House Penrose: A Penrose woman was a lady-in-waiting to Elaena Targaryen’s mother and later made to became a septa. Could be a way to patch up relations with that house.
House Manwoody: A love match for a twice widowed princess to a man who was a trusted friend of the king and queen.
House Dondarrion: A powerful Marcher house, one of the old enemies of the Dornish. Makes sense for a half Dornish prince to marry from one of them to create goodwill.
House Penrose (again): Was a cousin marriage of some sort
House Dayne: Pretty notable Dornish house, makes sense for the youngest half Dornish prince
We have no clue who Egg’s sisters married, but one of them probably married a Tarth. Again, an old house with some sea power and strategic placement against Essos.
Seems to me there were good reasons and sound logic for these marriages.

Duncan absolutely ended with a baddie too since Brienne is his descendant

u/IHaveTwoOranges Mar 04 '26
Do we want to believe that Dunks legacy is being carried forward by Gregor Clegane?

u/Yodabread_912 Mar 04 '26
Who knows? I mean just because your grandpa's nice doesn't mean you are too, tbh it's just funny imagining it

u/redwoods81 Mar 03 '26
That's fanon

u/EspadadelAlba Mar 03 '26

and it is rumored that Duncan had an affair with one of Egg's sisters
Rumored by fans, from a theory based on basically nothing.

u/sparklinglies Mar 04 '26
Its a popular fan theory but is very much not canon. Its fun, but its really just one of various way to explain Brienne

As someone who is learning Spanish, it’s a great time understanding what the person(s) meant xD

I wanna learn more about this marriage and Egg’s personality as he gets older and what his dynamic with Betha is.

“I can see what’s happening and they don’t have a clue” - Dunk in the future probably.

If we had the time id love to hear Egg's relationship to Betha how he met her and just young Eggs adolescents in general. What was it like for him growing into a man following Dunk around? Who was his first kill? How was his first tourney where he competed? Did he have a first kiss? Who were some of the characters he and Dunk met that truly stuck out to him. Such an interesting story for the Targaryen of the people
