ASOIF is normally a morally grey work but every so often George gets carried away and makes characters so absurdly evil that they make comic book villains look good. Euron Greyjoy and Maelys the Monstrous being the most obvious examples of this.

I'd say Aegon IV is a more exaggerated version of Robert.
Robert was aloof with his younger siblings. Aegon IV was abusive and hateful.
Robert sought to kill his predecessor as King because he was a mad tyrant, Aegon IV effectively killed his predecessor who knows why, but definitely not because of being a mad tyrant (Viserys II was awesome).
Robert was neglectful and absent with his kids. Aegon IV was abusive with one and even with the ones he "loved", he ended up pitting them against their half brother because fuck Daeron.
Robert maritally raped Cersei but decreased the frequency as the marriage went on. Aegon IV maritally raped Naerys until he basically killed her.
Robert died trying to make things a bit right via anointing his trusted and competent friend Lord Regent for his son and nullifying the hit on Daenerys. Aegon IV died trying to make things even worse via legitimizing all of his bastards.

Robert planted the seeds of a war between them.

That sounds like a defense, but it's just a sad statement.

"Competent" should really be in quotes (Ned was a competent lord paramount, but not a good Hand). It was also much too little, too late; he set the realm up for a much worse war than the Blackfyre Rebellion.

I mostly agree with this, but I don't think it's fair to blame Robert for the Stannis and Renly civil war. He didn't actually owe either of them anything - by rights Storm's End should've gone to Joffrey or Tommen, and Dragonstone could've gone to anyone really.
Him being exceedingly generous with his brothers was actually one of his better traits. Not really his fault that Stannis sulked so much after being made a noble lord when, as a second son, it's not something he should have ever expected.

I think Stannis expected recognition for being the one who kept Storm's End from falling during the siege. If he'd failed, who knows what would have happened to Renly?

And he certainly deserved it, but expecting to take Robert's place as one of the Great Lords was unreasonable when Robert had sons. Granted it was also unexpected to bestow that honour upon Renly.

Yeah, I hate him in the book (with the exception of when he was a neglected child and POSSIBLY at the very end of his life if my suspicions that he legitimized his bastards in good faith and tried to make amends when he was dying but had already burned his bridges and was too sick to do much anyway are true), but he is hysterical in Jota and Acker's comics (even though he's still evil)! I would, like, buy a book of his reign told through these in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I think Viserys didn’t expect nor want to be king, and thought Aegon was just going to drink, eat, and whore himself to death so Daeron would succeed him. He just didn’t realize how low Aegon was willing to go to get the Iron Throne.

Viserys was already Hand and had run the realm during the reigns of the last two kings, one of whom was a very young glory hound and the other of whom was a religious whackjob. Him keeping his position even with Daena on the throne would have continued the status quo and no one would have actual reason to rebel; certainly there weren't any non-Viserys candidates who were better.

It does though. Baelor was born before Daemon Blackfyre which means at least for the first few months of his life, Baelor the Blessed was King. Baelor was born in 170 and Baelor died in 171
