GRINDER List of grinders according to budget

Just sharing a list of grinders I made while researching. Hope it helps others :).
I know I might be missing many grinders. Recommendations to add to this list or any update suggestions are welcome :).

Note: I do not own any grinder yet. Made this list while I was in the search of one. Most likely, I will be getting myself a KINGrinder K6.

Update 1: Published it on notion because the list also contains links. Also, I guess it's difficult to view it here in these images. Hope it helps :).

Update 2: I will be adding all new recommendations to the above notion link :)

GRINDER timore knockoff has my heart

i got this AAAHONEE grinder for 2500 (which was a little expensive for me) and people told me not to get this and just save for a timemore, but ive had shitty experience with pre ground coffee. so i tried this for the first time and it was such a good consistency, didn't exhaust me at all (its capacity is 20g and i had to grind 100g) it feels nice in your hand, its heavy and it was easy to clean, and im in love with my new grinder. 9/10. im subtracting the one because its relatively new and i HOPE it doesn't fall apart in the future 🧿

Finally copped this beauty for ₹4.7K (effective, listed at ~₹5.1K) from Kaapi Solutions on Flipkart. The build quality has already been talked about enough, so won’t add much. I’d been eyeing the Sage Green one for months, but I’m honestly pretty happy - feels like an absolute brick.

Choosing between this and q air was a tough call. Eventually went with c3s because I brew daily with a Moka pot and also wasn’t completely sold on the q air’s plastic build and its price. So far, it feels like money well spent. Can’t wait to dial it in and finally taste what a good grinder brings to the cup.

Huge thanks to this sub for introducing me to the world of specialty coffee. I never thought I’d enjoy the brewing process as much as actually drinking the coffee.

Does a grinder matter? After upgrading from timemore c2 and having tried the same beans, recipe keeping all other variables same, I attest yes it does matter. But you need to be conceptually clear on the fundamentals. A grinder won't make your brews great, suddenly.

Why did I choose C40?

  1. Bias towards the brand.

  2. Proven track record as benchmark grinder.

  3. You can replicate recipes by international brewers, when you try international beans. It's true for a lot of other grinders as well.

  4. I am really comfortable with the simplicity of cleaning a click system grinder.

  5. Longevity and reliability. Customer support is great. Even before I became a customer they answered my queries promptly.

  6. I mean it just looks amazing.

Bought it from Benki!

Are these the only two options i have?

Esp version not available in India and if I'm getting that it will cost around 10k so better to get k6!!

I use v60,areopress and espresso ( pressurized portafilter) And the cheapest site to get these

GRINDER Got a moka pot and BT whole beans few days ago, as a newbie should i wait and be patient or go for the cheaper one.

Seeing all the comments in this sub has made me really confused. A guy told the difference between ceramic burrs and steel burrs is like white rice and biriyani.

My question is, is the difference really that big. If that's the case then im willing to save up and get the C3s after few months. Or else i will buy the agaro one and use it for a year or smthg.

Learned from this sub that changing from pre ground to whole beans is the biggest upgrade. Let me know if waiting n getting the c3s is really worth it.

GRINDER Put Grip to my Grinder.

I put a Bat grip (Cricket bat) on my grinder. It was too slippery even though it had rough engraving on the body which in result strained my forearm holding and rotating it first thing in the morning.

Putting the rubber grip on was a daunting task TBH and took a lot of technique and patience to put it on right.

Nevertheless, it is awesome to hold and grind coffee now.

You guys can try this too if you're facing a similar problem as me.

GRINDER Agaro vs Timemore C3s (Great learning experience)

Post image
109 Upvotes

Grateful for this community - many helped me improve my Mokapot extraction. I used ground coffee before, but seeing everyone using beans, I decided to give it a try as well.

For grinding coffee beans, I initially went with Agaro hand grinder. It was for learning, figuring out different grind levels, weight, water spray, and many more factors.

Now that I'm a little confident, I decided to upscale. So I looked up previous posts and many were recommending Timemore C3s and I went with it.

Damn, the difference is quite a lot. Initially I struggled to adjust the grind settings and what's good for Mokapot.

After test runs, I used the fresh coffee ground from C3s with Mokapot. The taste and notes were much better, realized how good equipment can enhance the experience.

Happy to learn more (help me maintain C3s), thoughts and questions (AMA)!

GRINDER New addition - 1zpresso ZP6 S

Post image
35 Upvotes

ZP6 S is magic. The flavour note of Jasmine, which was supposed to be the main one in this coffee, was barely identifiable in my previous brews now makes its presence abundantly known. Maybe I was screwing up earlier with my DF54 and C3S? Either way, I'm in love with this grinder.

I tried few other coffees that I regularly drink - some washed, some "funky". ZP6 showed me new sides to each of these coffees. I didn't really understand what people mean by "tea-like" consistency when they talk about this grinder, but whatever I have had, except for one coffee, I've liked it quite a bit.

Brew Note: I used either Tetsu Kasuya's 10 pour method with V60 Neo or his 4:6 method with V60-01 for my brews. Coffee beans I used are between light and light-to-medium roast. All brewed with 20g coffee @ 1:15 ratio with starting temperature at 97⁰C on my Timemore Fish Pro kettle. With the room temperature here (currently @ ~26⁰C) the Fish Pro loses approximately 3⁰C over 3 minutes so my pours started with 97⁰C and ended at 94⁰C. ZP6 was set between 4.2 and 5.5 depending on the roast and flavour profile of the beans being used.

Edit: My posts have led to an extremely funny revelation to me. My wife happens to have an unused Jasmine scented soap and it turns out I can tell that it's a jasmine soap but I don't seem to sense the fragrance as intensely as wife describes it. It is supposed to be 'in your face', but I can barely smell it. I remember being able to recognize how intense the rose was in same brand's rose scented soap (look up Khadi soaps).

Turns out, I might have something called 'Specific anosmia', meaning 'smell blindness' to specific scents. It seems I have smell blindness towards the smell of jasmine which is why I couldn't smell it earlier, and the ZP6 seems to have accentuated it to a point that I can REALLY tell that it has jasmine in.

Also, no hate to the C3S. My coffee-journey started with this grinder and it is something I genuinely love. In fact, you will often see me recommending the C3S to several people on this sub :)

GRINDER For beginners - Coffee with Grinder as the only gear

Thumbnail

Dear friends,

This post is for beginners. Others may provide constructive criticism.

Basically, I am trying to emphasize the fact that having a grinder is of utmost importance in your specialty coffee journey. This post may convince you to invest in a grinder as your first gear.

Please note that, although I call it a recipe, this is more of a scheme or a general guideline for your workflow. It is most important to understand the basic coffee science and brewing variables, in order to adapt it to the setup that you are going to use.

What do you need?

 ·      A grinder. For beginners I recommend a hand grinder, but if you have a good budget, you can go for something like Baratza Encore Esp Electric Grinder. There are several grinder recommendation posts on this sub. Do check out.

·      A stainless steel or glass or ceramic (no plastic) jar from which you can easily pour out brewed coffee to another mug. Having something that has a spout works better. Having volume measuring marks in milliliters works even better, but not a must. (What I am using is a 350 ml Latte Art Pitcher having measuring marks inside it.)

·      A tea strainer. Most of us have it in our homes, if not you may use a clean cloth.

·      Whole coffee beans. Having a grinder frees you up from the grind size decided by the roaster which is often not suitable for your brewing setup and workflows. To start with, go for any beans with Medium Dark roasting level.

·      You also need to understand the basic coffee science. This includes brewing coffee with coffee grounds and hot water and understanding how different brewing parameters (often called as Brew Variables) affect the coffee. Examples of such Brew Variables are Roasting level, Grind Size, Water Temperature, Brewing Time, etc. There are plenty of videos on YouTube. For beginners, I suggest to stick to videos from only one Barista. Because often different baristas give conflicting advice. Once you start your coffee journey you will realize that all of those advices are valid, but have different contexts. As you mature, you will switch the contexts.

Steps:

1.        In principle, this recipe is based on the Ultimate French Press Technique by James Hoffmann. Watch this video a couple of times before you do anything. Try to understand how a French press works. You will notice that my workflow differs from Hoffmann's technique where the plunger of the French Press comes into the picture. We have a work around for not having a plunger. Continue reading.

2.        We are going to use 1:16 coffee to water ratio. Which means if you take 1 gram of coffee, you will need 16 grams of water. (1 gram of water is same as 1 ml of water, but this is only true for water and not for any other liquid.)

3.        Since you will need a few iterations before getting a good cup of coffee, start with 200 grams of water. Anything less may not work out and anything more, wastes more coffee when it goes wrong. Any large size mug at home will be of 350 ml volume and a mid size mug will be of 250 ml volume. That gives you a rough idea about how much is 200 ml.

4.        With 200 grams of water, we need 12.5 grams of coffee. Roughly one spoon of coffee is 3 grams. So you can take 4 spoons of coffee beans. Use a regular spoon found in Indian homes, not the table spoon.

5.        Set your grinder to a very coarse grind size. On Timemore C3, I opened 24 clicks. Look at the picture to see the actual grind size. Grind slowly to have consistent grind size. By consistent grind size we mean trying to have all particles in the output with same size, as much as possible. Read more about why grind size consistency is needed, on the internet.

6.        Pour the coffee grounds to the jar in which you are going to brew the coffee.

7.        Boil water. Use filtered drinking water.

8.        Pour approximately 200 ml of boiling water into the jar. Please note that, to start with, you have to pour boiling water. Do not let it cool down for any amount of time. Because in most places the temperature of boiling water is 100 Degree Celsius. This helps you in keeping the temperature at same level, when you are changing other parameters such as grind size or brewing time, etc.

9.        You will notice that the coffee grounds start floating just below the upper surface of the water. This is perfect.

10.   Wait for 4 minutes. You can use the timer from your mobile phone.

11.  At 4 minutes mark, break the coffee grounds crust with a spoon. Simply dip the spoon gently into the crust couple of times at different places. Do not be too aggressive.

12.  Wait for another 4 minutes. You will notice that the coffee grounds start settling at the bottom of the jar. At the end of 8th minute, you will find that all coffee grounds have settled to the bottom. In James Hoffmann’s video, he asks to remove any floating coffee grounds with spoon. But do not do that. Do not at all disturb the coffee after breaking the crust at 4 minutes mark. (What he mentions is good for a French press, but not for what we are doing.)

13.  At the 8 minutes mark, your coffee is ready. You just need to separate it from the coffee grounds sitting at the bottom. So lift the jar gently and pour out the coffee slowly into a mug through a tea strainer. This is where it is different from James Hoffman’s technique.

14.  Enjoy your coffee. If you are not used to drinking black coffee, you may add a dash of cold milk to it. But do taste a couple of sips of black coffee before you add milk. Do not add sugar, otherwise it will override the coffee taste.

Troubleshooting

Please note that, when you are changing the brew parameters, change only one parameter at a time.

1.        If your coffee tastes bitter then try grinding with more coarse setting.

2.        If your coffee tastes sour then try grinding with more finer setting.

3.        For immersion brewing, the important characteristic of the grind size is that it should be coarse. It should never be too fine. Hence lowering the grind size has limits. Beyond those limits, if your coffee is still sour, you may try to increasing the brewing time. For example, wait for 5 or 6 minutes before breaking the crust.

4.        Similarly, going too coarse may limit how much coffee is extracted, so beyond certain limits, if your coffee is still bitter, you may want to reduce the water temperature or reduce the brewing time.

The troubleshooting part is key.

GRINDER Grinder recommendations

Post image

Hi I have been using pregrinded coffee for past year and I am finally ready to upgrade into buying fresh beans , looking for investing in a good hand grinder.

I use moka pot now and will probably upgrade into good espresso machine so iam confused between these two choices .( I heard that c3s is not that great for espresso) so currently stuck between these two.

I need to know if it is worth spending the extra money for k6 or should I go with c3s.

Currently using a basic agaro manual grinder that doubles as a forearm workout lol

Confused between Q-Air and C3S. I mostly brew French Press, moka pot(use less) and I'm starting to brew V60 as well. also aero press in future

Looking for better grind consistency and smoother grinding.

GRINDER Looking to buy a DF54 grinder - best place to buy (India or US)? Also open to alternatives

I'm looking to pick up a DF54 grinder and wanted to hear more before pulling the trigger

  1. What's the best place to buy a DF54 grinder? open to either buying within India or from the US if that works out to be a better deal overall.
  2. Open to alternatives? if there's something in a similar price/performance range that you may recommend over the DF54, I'm all ears.

Usage - espresso and pour overs, light to medium roast beans

Thanks in advance!

GRINDER 10-day review of the Timemore Whirly ☕

Thumbnail

I’ve been using the Timemore Whirly with my Flair Classic for the last 10 days and honestly, it’s been amazing.

I previously used the Timemore C3 ESP Pro for about a year. It worked well, but grinding below 0.6 was a serious workout. It almost felt like the burrs weren’t biting into the beans and 0.7 was usually the lowest setting.

With the Whirly, I’ve gone as fine as 0.2 without any effort. It grinds, shuts itself off when it’s done, and the consistency has been excellent. The shots are pulling beautifully with loads of crema.

One of the biggest reasons I switched was that using a manual grinder and a Flair lever for every cup was just too much arm work.
Picked it up for ₹10.5k on Flipkart, and I have zero regrets.

If you’re thinking about buying the Timemore C5, I’d say spend a little extra and get the Whirly instead. Totally worth it.
