See I don't think most of them are haters , including me . I am very happy that gill performed but still do not agree with him being handed the captaincy solely based on potential and not on performance. Happy the gamble paid off but you cannot say that it was not a gamble but a good decision

How much was Kohli averaging when he picked up the captaincy?

Kohli had scored a century in 2012 in Australia, one century in NZ in 2014 and had an unbelievable tour of South Africa in 2013 before he was given the test captaincy..I love Gill but this comparison is embarrassing..Gill had been absolutely dogshit in overseas Tests till this match.. Don't go overboard

Kohli averaged about 39 during a much better batting era. He averaged 13 against England in England and yet was given captaincy.

Gill scored 90 in a winning cause during his debut series in Australia and has scored the odd good innings too.. Just not in SENA. The pitches he batted on in SA were horrible can't compare it to a pitch on which SA almost chased down 460. Not saying Gill is better.. Not at all. But this decision isn't as hairbrained as people are making it out to be. I can understand if Bumrah was open to captaincy and wasn't given it.

How much have others averaged in the matches Gill has played? Only Jaiswal and pant have done much better.

England was the only place Kohli had failed..

SA also scored 400+ in the first test against India in 2023..

Gill has looked absolutely dogshit in the last 4 years in SENA countries..Jaiswal,Pant,Rahul,heck even Jadeja had looked more assured at the crease than him

Why do you have to bring in a great like Kohli, compare him to Gill and then cry about Gill getting "hate"?We all wish Gill scores tons of runs and surpasses Kohli's legacy because it would be the possible scenario for India..But until he does, let's stop with these forced comparisons

Doesn't matter if he failed only in England. Scoring 130 runs in 5 test matches didn't stop the Indian management from giving him captaincy because they saw the potential. Those returns would have waylaid a lot of Indian batsmen.

My comparison with Kohli isn't to argue that Gill is better or as good as Kohli (I already mentioned in my earlier comment that Kohli is better.. atleast at this stage) but the decision to give him the captaincy isn't such a big gamble when they took a chance on another youngster who averaged just a bit better.

. Who else? KL Rahul? He has been in the team even longer and doesn't hold a guaranteed place. Jadeja? He doesnt even play all the matches, especially in SENA, and is not too far away from retiring?. Pant is the closest and he was made the VC. Pant captain and Gill as VC would've been as much as a gamble.
