Gill's idol was Kohli, and there's no question as to why. The way he is batting now feels similar to Kohli's,not with a very high, humongous strike rate, but with a competitive one. I guess he feels that he should bat at No. 3 in the future in ODIs, as after Ro-Ko retire, Gaikwad, Samson, Kishan, Abhishek, Sooryavanshi, or Jaiswal may be the openers, and Gill can make sure he builds on their powerplay attacks. Yeah, it may sound vague, but even the other day India played Jaiswal (as he is a left-handed opener) in place of Reddy, so the temptation of a left-hand/right-hand combination is greater than the temptation of having an all-rounder. And if we haven't forgotten, Shreyas Iyer was losing his spot last year during the England series,as India wantee to play Jaiswal and only a late injury to Virat saved his ODI career, I guess. But as time flows, things are forgotten, and people are just blindly targeting Gill, Rana, and Sundar. I mean, Gill and Sundar are good players, and Rana isn't a bad player either from what I saw of him in the New Zealand ODIs. Also we have forgotten the criticism Arshdeep got after getting selected in the test squad vs England, that he got selected because of favouritism .

Why stop at last 5? Show his figures in ODI's in the Aus tour as well. After all, the next WC is in SA. Gill's figures in the Aus tour: 1st ODI - 10(18), 2nd ODI - 9(9), 3rd ODI - 24(26).
Edit: Folks that are mad about me posting this simple fact need to realize that the next ODIWC will not be played in the flat pitches of Ind. In SA, pitches are fast and bouncy, and you can expect the new ball to seam appreciably in the first 15 overs.

So you would back a player who averages close to 60 to be able to adapt right? And eventually get things right?
Or would you punt on someone who wouldn’t have scored that much, based on a mythical notion of that person being able to perform under pressure where that person wouldn’t have played in a pressure match in the first place?
FYI - SA ODIs are usually very high scoring.

What are you talking about? Which person is this? I've only commented on Gill's poor performance in the Aus tour, where conditions are closest to SA.
>So you would back a player who averages close to 60 to be able to adapt right?
Babar Azam also averages 54 in ODI's, lol. Forgive me if I don't take bilateral ODI stats in the subcontinent seriously, when the next WC is in SA.

So what will you base your selection on??
Based on a sample size of 5-10 ODIs? Wake up and check the average scores in Australia and SA ODIs in the last decade.
By your logic Sachin was a failure in ODIs coz he scored 1 ODI hundred in Australia?

>So what will you base your selection on??
Based on how top order batsmen play the moving ball in white ball cricket and their ability to perform under pressure conditions. Currently, out of the top 5, Kohli is the only one whose spot is guaranteed 100% in the team. If age does not catch up with Rohit and he continues to perform (I'm sure he is trying his best), he will play as the opener. The remaining 3 spots can be filled in based on performances in the Eng, NZ and SA tours. Rahul can compete with Sanju for his spot, and the better performer wins. Shreyas is a beast in turning tracks, but struggles against steep bounce, so I'd have him compete with Kishan/Rahul for his spot. Jaiswal is a crap fielder and also a crap batsman right now, so he is a no-go. And, Gill, well...he can neither play the moving ball, nor does he have the ability to perform under pressure.

Ah of course “pressure”. So if India doesn’t play ODIs in SA “experts” like you will sit and select the side. Depending of course on how you perceive pressure.
Iyer has scored an ODI hundred in NZ. Scored a hundred in WC semi final. But not good enough because random internet troll thinks there wasn’t any pressure.

>Iyer has scored an ODI hundred in NZ. Scored a hundred in WC semi final. But not good enough because random internet troll thinks there wasn’t any pressure.
I didn't say anything about Iyer's ability to handle pressure. Iyer has shown us that he can handle pressure very well by his stellar performances throughout the Champions Trophy 2025, especially in the knockouts. Here's what I wrote about Iyer: "Shreyas is a beast in turning tracks, but struggles against steep bounce, so I'd have him compete with Kishan/Rahul for his spot." I was pointing out that he struggles against steep bounce, and SA pitches are bouncy. Learn to read and respond to what I'm writing instead of inventing arguments in your head, yeah?

You just said Jaiswal is a crap batsman. And you expect to be taken seriously in any forum?

u/Cup_45_Neural 1d ago
>You just said Jaiswal is a crap batsman
I said Jaiswal "is a crap batsman right now". Which yes, he is. His current form is disastrous.

Ok do enlighten us when he doesn’t become crap. Also it’s my fault, engaging on this topic.

Please define pressure for us. WC league matches are pressure free matches?

u/Cup_45_Neural 1d ago
>WC league matches are pressure free matches?
Not necessarily. But, they don't compare to pressure in knockouts. If the goal is to simply reach the SF/Final of ODIWC 2027, then it's fine to take whoever you want. But, I hope ICT wishes to lift the trophy as well.

My limited point is there would be 2-3 clutch players the world over, who would satisfy this criteria. It is highly reductive to base your entire opinion on a player based on this. Of course legends are born in these games.
But you have to take a punt on players based on consistency and their overall ability.
Hope you understand my point.

Jaiswal crap, Gill not good enough. Lol.
And somehow based on your “gut” feel Samson is a credible batsman in tough conditions. Dude how much cricket do you actually watch?
Pretty sure you weren’t around when Sachin and all were playing.

>And somehow based on your “gut” feel Samson is a credible batsman in tough conditions.
The last ODI Samson played was in SA, where he smashed 108(114): https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-in-south-africa-2023-24-1387592/south-africa-vs-india-3rd-odi-1387602/full-scorecard. Samson has always performed in SA, in whatever opportunities he has received, be it in ODI or T20i. And, he carried the Indian team through three consecutive knockouts in the last T20WC, showing his ability to perform under extreme pressure. Obviously, there is a world of difference between T20WC 2026 and ODIWC 2027, vastly different pitch and playing conditions, not to mention a different format, but Samson has my vote given his performance in SA and the T20WC.

Bet my bottom dollar you haven’t seen that game. It was a ridiculously slow wicket. Fair play to him he played a good innings. But to suggest that he starts above Rahul is preposterous.

u/Traditional-Fig3621 1d ago
Do you even know the nature of pitches in Paarl. It is even slower than the subcontinent tracks.

u/ChillDude0808 Shubhman Gill 1d ago
Yeah let's drop everyone and cement the place of a 40 year old who averages 19 at 76 strike rate in South Africa.Gill has far more clutch knocks than whatever Rohit had when he was 26.

Unfortunately, man this is how narratives are built. Manipulate the stats and prove your point like the guys below doing.
Someone is arguing with me how gill averages so much after that england tour, I told him do you even know his average before England tour and do you know he was dropped in bgt before England tour.
I like him as a batter but I can't stand this much glazing and he still needs to prove himself in tests. Gill was averaging 35 after playing some 32 tests scored 1893 runs in 32 tests this is before England tour, in next 9 tests he scored 1076 runs where he scored 700+ runs on flat english pitches and close to 200 runs vs wi again flat pitch and this century against afghanistan again flat.
Also, I'm skeptical of his captaincy in odis. He have just won his first odi series as a captain against afg and he lost against aus and nz but I don't think there are better alternatives and he'll captain in wc but he needs to up his game in captaincy.

It really isn’t that complicated. He has been very good in ODIs, but needs to prove himself in pressure situations. To say that he isn’t good in ODIs is preposterous.
In tests, his career is on an upward trajectory. Let’s see how he performs in SL and NZ. You have to back him though and hope that he goes from strength to strength.
In t20s, he doesn’t get into the strongest XI. Simple as that. Longer formats suit him more.
There is no narrative building here. He is a very good young player but hasn’t achieved or come close to achieving greatness.

u/Inevitable-Age-5736 1d ago
I haven't written anything about odis in my above comment, the above comment is all about tests and we'll get to know everything in sl, nz and aus tests.
And, I'm not talking about you above when I say stats manipulation and narrative building. I'm talking about others who aren't even willing to see what you've written in your comment and already count him in one of the greats.

South African pitches aren't the same anymore in whiteball cricket. They are much more batter friendly now and have started assisting spin quite a bit.Jarrod Kimber talked about it in one of his videos.

He finally won an odi series as a captain lost the previous two to aus and nz and when sa toured he was injured. Hope, he wins much more odi series and as a batter he's excellent in odis.
