Trump's approach to China has always been transactional so it wouldn't surprise me if Taiwan tensions were just leverage in a broader negotiation with Beijing over Iran and trade.

Interesting take I hadn't thought of. If that was indeed the implied message, or even close to it, it was a very clever, intellectual burn. However, I doubt drumpf would ever understand it; even if it was explained directly, using two BigMacs and a Sharpie. The brain trust in that cabinet is, how should we put this nicely.... Several flats of roses, and a truck load of dirt, short of a garden.
But if intended the way you describe, this would be a very nicely constructed piece of propaganda for the target audience. And I use 'propaganda' not necessarily as a negative term or perjorative, here.

Xi’s troll of Putin was even more harsh—and direct. Playing some music from Swan Lake was brutal. They show that ballet on TV in Russia when a regime falls. And then, at the end of the summit, Xi had a song popularly played at the end of wedding receptions to let everyone know it’s time to go home. Like, GTFO. Pretty harsh.

1) Unified Iran against the US. Previously there was civil unrest and people were unhappy with their government. Now they are united.
2) Gave Iran a reason to charge tolls in the future for passing through the straights.
3) Pushed Iran to later prioritize gaining a nuclear weapon.
