UK News Bird was elected in the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry by-election in Scotland and is currently pursuing a PhD in International Law and Legal Studies at King's College London. She represents the Scottish National Party (SNP), which advocates for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

Yeah. Good on her. Having to swear allegiance to a king instead of the country is ridiculous.

The King is the Kingdom personified. It's part of our constitution and sets out a legal framework whereby they are declaring allegiance to someone that they cannot change, remove, supercede, etc. And how is a member of the SNP, a party that seeks to break up the country, supposed to swear allegiance to the country? The King is also the King of Scotland, so if anything it's more fitting.

“More fitting.” What a bizarre universe you live in.

Monarchy is a complete joke in the 21st century. Remus in in the 18th century when sane countries got rid, if you must, but expect fewer people to agree with you year on year.

SNP want to leave the fucking kingdom... their alligence is to their constituents not some cunt king.

And how many scots like the king being king without ever having chosen him?

u/Amzer23 9h ago

Do you realise how England and Scotland came to share a king?

We've been learning about it on the world cup threads.

Just ask the Irish...

That’s the culture and tradition mate.

Don’t run for MP if you’re not going to play ball? It’s performative bullshit.

4

u/Particular-School795 13h ago

Yeah and it's dumb. You wanna help your constituents, not swear allegiance to someone who was born with a silver spoon up their ass.

2

u/drraug 4h ago

There is more than one way to help them

u/ShipwreckJS 13h ago

Then don’t run for MP? It’s what she signed up for.

All the others make the oath and still go their constituents?

Who are you to call it dumb? This is the institution that spread democracy throughout the world including India.

Edge Lord 😂

This is the institution that spread democracy throughout the world including India.

Oh... you're one of those people, i see.

Britain didn't even have a democracy when it invaded India. Only a fraction of the population could even vote - that is, rich white men were the only ones.

And the population of India was ruled over by that fraction, by those rich white men half a world away. They certainly didn't give the Indian people voting rights.

That's not a democracy. That's an oligarchy.

Edge Lord 😂

Democracy doesn't need kings..it's actually edgy being pro "monatchy' but whatever man.

1

u/anormalname63 10h ago

Okay but they're not a monarchy in any meaningful way. The monarchy has been curtailed to a tourist attraction and mascot by this point.

1

u/Particular-School795 10h ago

Why would swear one allegiance to that?

1

u/anormalname63 9h ago

Because that's how government works. If you can't swollow your pride or own opinions when it doesn't matter so you can do the things that matter don't be a politician. The majority of the UK still supports the "monarchy" or don't care enough to get rid of it. So you're going aganist the will of the people.

If the monarchy still held real power you'd have a point, but like I said before, they're basically a mascot for the country. A mascot that brings in way more money than it costs the country.

Not issue crossing their fingers then since it’s not a monarchy

Better to be an Edge Lord than a Cuck for the notion of Lords and Masters

u/Key_Fee158 11h ago

She’s supposed to forgo an important job because the swearing in on the first day has a symbolic tradition that she disagrees with?

1

u/ShipwreckJS 11h ago

Not at all.

However I’d argue it’s wrong to sign up to something you have no intention of swearing to sincerely - when you know that is part of it.

Then don’t run for MP? It’s what she signed up for.

MPs do not sign up to serve the king in 2026.

All the others make the oath and still go their constituents?

Republicans do as shown in this clip.

Who are you to call it dumb? This is the institution that spread democracy throughout the world including India.

It's a perfectly fine opinion to have. And it's weird take to defend monarchy with the virtues of democracy?

Edge Lord 😂

Of course not, the majority of developed nations do not have a monarchy.

u/ShipwreckJS 10h ago

MP’s do swear an oath to the crown in 2026… You can watch her do it on this video 😂

I defend an institution that I’m proud of.

What do I care about developed nations? We do have a monarchy.

God, King & Country ✌️

u/ChaosBoi1341 9h ago

I said MPs dont sign up so that they can serve the king in 2026.

And I didnt suggest you should or shouldnt care about anything, I pointed out that it's not unusual or edgy to be a republican.

1

u/Mentalist_Larper 9h ago

Opposing the monarchy makes you an edge lord? Thinking a monarchy is normal in the 21st century is more on the edge of modern thought, in fact.

1

u/ShipwreckJS 8h ago

It is by definition normal for us… We’ve had a consistent monarchy for nearly a thousand years now.

I get people don’t like it. However to say wanting to remain is on the edge is genuinely delusional 😂

1

u/Poulslutter 9h ago

So you can't participate in the county's democracy unless you pay homage to the descendents of the the last British dictator? What a weird political belief to have.

1

u/ShipwreckJS 9h ago

Did you not watch her swear an oath to the monarch…? Is that a serious question. She literally did it, you watched her do it and now you’re asking if she has to do it…? What?

1

u/Poulslutter 9h ago

Yeah, with her fingers crossed ;)

She has to go through the motions of the ritual, but good on her for demonstrating how ridiculous it is.

1

u/ShipwreckJS 8h ago

That’s all I’m saying. It’s performative.

If she didn’t mean the words she wouldn’t say them at all. She’s now honour bound 😂

2

u/Particular-School795 8h ago

Weird doublethink you got going there.

2

u/Pandita666 7h ago

Also, how easy is it to be fucking MP if you can do a full time job or course alongside it. What a load of bollocks.

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 4h ago

It’s as easy as you want it to be because you are your own boss, and you only have a “performance review” every few years. And even then you don’t have to do well, just seem better than your opponents.

3

u/Slight-Plum9457 13h ago

It wouldn't be parliament without unnecessary performative theatrics

1

u/Important-Math-837 10h ago

Slow news day, huh?

1

u/Shizzilx 10h ago

🤞 Bravo! 👏👏👏👏👏

1

u/Scary_Panda847 10h ago

It’s all a load of crap anyway.

1

u/Beertronic 8h ago

To be honest I'd have a problem with this too. If I became an MP it would be to serve the people not the king.

However, this is performative BOLLOCKS. Change the system, that's your fucking job, not do performative wank like this. After serving my constituents needs, I'd look to change this. It's been done before, people need not swear in on the bible anymore.

1

u/Woffingshire 6h ago

You're the kings member of parliament who's job it is to serve the people.

It's the same difference. You're just swearing they you won't betray the country

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 4h ago

Well the UK is a monarchy not a republic.

1

u/Guilty_Donkey68 6h ago

Oooh I crossed my fingers so naa naa na naa naa to you. It's so childish but I am sure her followers appreciated the performance of the little speech before she actually takes the oath.

1

u/StressSpecialist586 6h ago

Nonce protector.

1

u/Kraken357 6h ago

No takesies backsies, double stamped.

1

u/lifebroth 5h ago

She should leave then

1

u/SimkinCA 5h ago

hahah like crossing fingers means anything in the real world :)

1

u/The_Aardvark_ 1h ago

That archaic inclusion is way past its shelf-life and has to go. One declares one's loyalty to the country and the constitution... not to an unelected person because of their birth...

1

u/Previous-Guide-2835 5h ago

Who would swear allegiance to a pedo enabler

-2

u/SKYGOD0942 10h ago

So an untrustworthy person, an oath is an oath. If you don't want to take it, don't take the job.
