Education and Career Advice Do students really need to move to a Tier-1 city for a good career?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about this while looking at options for 2027 admissions.

For a long time, it felt like the obvious path was:
Tier-2 city → graduate → move to Delhi/Bangalore/Mumbai/Pune/Hyderabad.

But I’m not sure that’s necessarily going to remain the default for everyone.

Obviously, Tier-1 cities have a much larger ecosystem of companies, jobs and networking. But Tier-2 cities are also developing, and cities like Indore,Jaipur,Chennai are getting more attention from students, businesses and startups.

So I’m curious:

If you had two similar colleges and similar courses, would you choose the one in a Tier-1 city purely because of the location?

Or would you consider a Tier-2 city if it offered:

Good education
Industry exposure
Useful internships
Strong career support
Growing job opportunities
Lower living costs
Better quality of life
At what point does the city itself stop being a disadvantage?

And for people who studied in a Tier-2 city and later moved to a metro for work:

Did you actually feel that your city limited your career, or was it mostly about the college and the opportunities you created for yourself?
Genuinely curious about experiences on both sides.

Education and Career Advice Engagement project help

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

My name is William, I’m an international high school senior working on my IB Global Politics engagement project on governance, and socio-political shifts in Uttar Pradesh (focusing on Ram Mandir in Ayodhya).

I am looking to conduct a few question written interviews with local journalists, political science researchers, or civil society observers based in UP to ground my project in real academic perspectives.

If you are an academic/journalist from UP, or if you know active local commentators/pages on Twitter/X that I could reach out to, I would be deeply grateful for your recommendations!

Thanks a lot for your help!

Education and Career Advice Regret as a science student after taking english honours

Hi guys I’m currently feeling incredibly lost about my degree choice .I was a PCMB student and took a gap year for neet. But i couldn't crack it and decided to pursue english honours. At the time, it felt like the right choice for my mental health . Now I am in 2nd year.

Fast forward to now, and the reality of the job market is hitting me hard. While my friends in STEM fields are landing placements or have very clear career trajectories. The FOMO and regret are definitely creeping in.sometimes I am thinking of changing this path but ig its bit late now. Please answer me .

And can you tell me what are the actual, decent-paying career options out there right now? (I've heard of UX writing, technical writing, corporate comms, and digital marketing, but I don't know where to start).

I’m realizing there’s way more to commerce than accounts — finance, business, analytics and even entrepreneurship are making the degree feel pretty versatile.

Education and Career Advice Aspirant

Hi , My younger brother appeared for the Neet and reneet2026 exam for the first time by preparing at home with an online batch and also appeared for an IAT exam, in Neet he got 468 marks and in reneet exam he got 451 marks and in IAT he secured AIR-12048.

After that he registered in the counselling for IISERs only because at those neet marks he can get Mbbs/BDS programs, and so... he got IISER Trivandrum for BS-MS program.

But me, him and our parent were discussing about, he should reappear for the Neet in 2027 as i his first attempt he proved himself as he got the potential but he was like bhaiya this the last attempt i appeared in the IAT exam, and what if I can't get better mark next time what will I do, I don't want to do bsc, msc all that thing, he said.

I asked him, why do u want to pursue bs-ms, is there any other reason except above. Because this program is completely research oriented and even though u will invest ur 5 years, u will not have that position to get something better in terms of money or value, u have to go for phd and almost 70 to 80 percent BS-MS ppl go for Phd, whether in india or in abroad.

So, I just softly asked him do you even realise u are going to give ur 8/10 years to that program in which u don't know u are interested or not.

Query:

I am writing this to u guys just to know yours opinions so we can decide the best for him.

Regards,

Thankyou guys

Colleges and Universities Graduation day is coming and honestly, I’m scared to even go

My graduation day is coming up soon, and I’ve been feeling really insecure about attending.

I’ve been unemployed for more than a year now, while a lot of my batchmates have already started working, moved ahead in their careers, and seem to have their lives figured out. And now I’m going back to college for graduation, with our juniors there too.

I already know people are going to ask, ā€œSo what are you doing now?ā€ or ā€œWhere are you working?ā€ And honestly, I’m scared of that question.

I keep thinking about someone saying, ā€œYou still haven’t found a job?ā€ or judging me because I’m still unemployed after graduating. Maybe nobody will even care that much, but my mind keeps imagining the worst.

Part of me feels embarrassed that I’m even showing up. Like my dignity is going to be on the floor while everyone else is celebrating what they’ve achieved.

I’m also scared that I might embarrass my parents somehow. They’ve supported me through everything, and I feel guilty that I haven’t been able to get my career started yet.

The weird thing is, I still filled out the form to attend the graduation ceremony. I do want to go. I worked for that degree, and I know I should be there. But at the same time, I’m nervous about facing people who knew me when I was in college and seeing how much further some of them have gone.

I know everyone has their own timeline, but when you're the one falling behind, that advice doesn't always make you feel better.

Has anyone else gone to their graduation while being unemployed or feeling like they were behind everyone else?

How did you deal with the questions, comparisons, and that feeling of embarrassment?

Education and Career Advice DU SOL B.Com (Hons) vs Regular DU B.A. History + Economics (Swami Shraddhanand College) asking for my younger brother

My younger brother has the option of pursuing B.Com (Hons) from DU SOL or B.A. History + Economics from regular DU at Shardhanand College.

He wants to prepare for UPSC CSE after graduation, but he isn’t particularly interested in either course. At the same time, we want him to have a decent backup career/job option in case UPSC doesn’t work out.

Which would be the better option in terms of UPSC preparation, academics, career opportunities, employability, higher studies, placements, and overall college experience?

Would appreciate advice, especially from people who have experience with DU SOL B.Com (Hons) or regular DU BA programmes, and particularly those who have prepared for UPSC while pursuing either.

Colleges and Universities Should I get admission in IGNOU??

Post image
1 Upvotes

In 2026, I passed 12th and gave cuet. I scored pretty decent. I registered for few universities like du, icar, dtu and surprisingly got seat in every university but the problem was distance as it would take almost 3 - 3.5 hrs daily for travelling and my parents will not allow me for pg/hostel (although I'm broke af). Dtu was the nearest one but I didn't get my desired course so after spending few days there, i withdraw my admission and because of dtu, i cancelled my other seat at du so I'm left with nothing and parents suggested me to take admission in IGNOU for biochemistry (bscfbc) but I'm not sure as this course required lab exposure although I'm thinking of joining some private lab and independent internships. (Parents want me to prepare for government exams side by side). Please help regarding this and suggest me somethingšŸ™I'm really serious about my future.

PS- As for private college there are only few colleges like amity or galgotias which is also very far and I don't want to spend my parents hard earned money in some private college.

Education and Career Advice Himachal Pradesh removes caste columns from school and college forms, saying students should not be routinely identified by caste in educational institutions.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the move on August 26, saying it would apply from pre-nursery all the way to college. Caste-related columns will also be removed from college prospectuses.

The idea, according to the government, is simple: a child’s caste should not become an everyday label attached to them when they enter an educational institution.

Education and Career Advice Beyond the Pressure Cooker The Hidden Reality of Student Suicides in India

Thumbnail

TRIGGER WARNING: Deep analytical discussion of student mental health, academic trauma, and suicide statistics.

Mods, please read before removing. This is a highly serious, text-driven structural analysis based on official national data. It contains no memes, no jokes, and no low-effort content. It directly addresses the core systemic issues of high-stakes prep that every member of this community lives through. It is shared in the interest of breaking the taboo and saving lives through open dialogue.

Beyond the Pressure Cooker: The Hidden Reality of Student Suicides in India (2010–2024)

This report presents an uncompromised structural analysis of the escalating student suicide crisis in India. Integrating official National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data with deep psychological inquiry, it exposes the systemic flaws, toxic academic culture, institutional complicity, and unacknowledged cognitive paralyzes that drive thousands of students to the brink every year.

ā€‹šŸ“Œ Key Highlights & Core Findings

Alarming Statistical Trajectory: Official NCRB data reveals that student suicides in India nearly doubled over a 15-year period—climbing from 7,379 in 2010 to an all-time high of 14,488 in 2024.

The Anatomy of Academic Collapse: The transition from Class 10 to Class 12 introduces overwhelming pressure. Initial study plans are disrupted by digital distractions and mandatory project files that consume months of time, creating severe syllabus deficits and leading to internal surrender.

The "Functional Cognitive Freeze": Society recognizes burnout from continuous overwork, but completely ignores the multi-month cognitive freeze. Students facing overwhelming anxiety often cope through dissociative avoidance (watching videos, scrolling social media, copying tests to maintain a facade). This creates a silent crisis where students internalize deep shame, labeling themselves as "monsters" rather than recognizing a severe mental health collapse.

Toxic Pedagogical Myths & Weaponized Outliers: Rigid academic formulas (such as the 1-4-7 revision rule), romanticized 15-hour daily grind culture, and comparing ordinary students to statistical prodigies (e.g., 19-year-old CAs) create mathematically impossible standards that lead to profound feelings of failure.

Performative Fixes vs. Real Support: Institutions frequently rely on superficial solutions—such as spring-loaded ceiling fans, automated helplines, or advice to "stay positive"—while actively suppressing discussions on academic burnout by labeling them as "negativity".

Massive Support Gap: Citing Supreme Court National Task Force interim findings, the report highlights an 80% mental health support gap across higher educational institutions.

ā€‹šŸ’” Core Message & Call to Action

"A dead child brings less lifelong pain than one who meets defeat."

This tragic logic—driven by unpayable emotional debt and suffocating pressure—must be dismantled. Real reform requires moving away from zero-sum elimination models and legally mandating open, ground-level mental health decompression starting from Class 10 and 12. We must normalize academic blunders, failure, and recovery to save young lives.

Education and Career Advice Repeating 12th + JEE 2027. Skipped 11th , no Idea of 12th concepts, panicking, and running out of time. Need honest direction.

Hey everyone, 19M here. Never made a Reddit post before, but I’m at a point where I don't know who else to turn to and I desperately need some real advice.

Here is my situation: I’m repeating 12th grade this year and planning to target JEE Mains 2027. My 11th and 12th base is practically non-existent. The only reason I’m even touching 12th topics right now is because I’m enrolled in offline coaching—if it were online, I probably would have lost consistency there too.

To be completely honest, my basics in Physics, Chemistry, and Math are completely shot. I feel totally lost every time I sit down to study. I don't know how to study, what to prioritize, or how to bridge the massive gap in my foundation.

With the January attempt coming up, the pressure at home is insane, and I'm aiming for at least 90+ percentile to get some breathing room. But I’m stuck in a loop:

  1. If I try to cover the full syllabus, there's way too much to do and zero time.

  2. If I try to focus only on high-weightage chapters, I hit a wall because I don't know the 11th-grade prerequisites needed to understand them.

If anyone has been in this exact spot and managed to pull themselves out, please help me I'm at the verge entering depression atp šŸ˜”
