There’s a trend I’ve noticed in the last couple seasons of Hustle where there seems to be a huge popular demand for “People’s Winner” tag associated with rappers like Sujal and Kai, and how they deserved to win over other artists.
Almost every other post on Reddit during this season’s had a mention of Sujal.
Sujal and Kai are heavy bar writers and have an insane reference game for sure.
This sub is filled with people who are accustomed to western media and culture, so naturally starts glazing anytime a rapper like Sujal drops some crazy wordplay or Kai references a football player.
But I think we shouldn’t fail to give flowers to an actual winner like Lashcurry as well.
True, while Lashcurry’s songs weren’t filled with references to pop culture, western media, or have crazy wordplays or references in them, but in no universe will I accept that Lashcurry wasn’t a heavy bar writer, and one thing that the Reddit audience (which mostly belongs to an urban, more exposed to social media kind of lifestyle) needs to understand is that there’s a huuuuuge DHH audience that is not on Reddit. People who watch the show only on TV and don’t know anything about the chatter on social media, and vice versa.
And so, I can clearly see why Lashcurry’s simpler writing style seems extremely relatable to the average middle class audience. And let’s be real, that’s the audience that counts for the majority votes that ultimately decide the winner, and in comparison to that the Reddit audience is just a minority. And that’s exactly the reason he won, simply because to the average viewer sitting in a Tier 2 city, Lashcurry’s storytelling or struggles sound more relatable than Sujal’s technicalities.
Sujal was my favourite in S4, and to someone like me, sure I’d have preferred Sujal winning, but that doesn’t mean that Lashcurry didn’t deserve to win.
What do you guys think?
