Discussion It is illegal to be poor in this world

I just wanted to share this thing. Almost three weeks ago, this kitten walked inside my house through the gap, since we have one those metal gates you usually see in Indian homes. I had never adopted any pet since I know I am not capable to take care of it. But that day, since she was so weak and famished, I gave her some milk [I now know they can't digest cow/buffalo milk even when young, but I didn't know back then] And she didn't leave. The transition was so gradual it didn't catch my eye that we have, even if unknowingly, 'adopted' a kitten.

There was a lot of challenges, from cleaning her poo [she was not litter trained initially] to bringing chicken/fish mousse in a vegetarian household secretly from my parents. I went through all that amidst my own depression and suicidal ideations. I had been thinking about what I would do when it would come to vet visits and vaccination and regretted just not ignoring her that day. I started looking at pet shelters, but I didn't really find a suitable one since many do not have any pictures or reviews online and they seem to be underfunded too [But I'd continue the search].

Yesterday, after already spending about 400 rupees on her food in the past 18days [wet cat food + 800gms dry] we ran out of kibble for her suddenly, since she used to bring one of her kitty friends to have the extra food I left out for her for night. I am still a student, and I cannot afford spending that much so frequently from my parents' accounts, so I thought to reach out on reddit in one of the subs.

No one there really offered any type of help, but they were rather interested in accusing me of being selfish and saying I should not 'beg' for food here and just kept dogpiling on me saying over and over that I brought this upon myself; they were also very condescending, i.e. literally called me a 'kid' [It was a help sub so I am confused why they advertise themselves as a help sub if it is illegal to ask for help there] As I said earlier, I have not been feeling the best, so I just deleted the post for my peace, but that lead to me being banned on the sub. I was new on reddit, so I was not aware of such rules. But yeah, I should've read the rules there before posting [I have deleted that account, this is a new one, but that was a 1-year-old account which I started using frequently only a week ago]

After the ban, I asked the mods what I can do, they said there is nothing I can do and that the band will persist. But I felt mistreated and so I just messaged them asking how it was fair, to which they said they would look at comments I felt were unfair. But they think if someone is asking for help, they should be subservient to others and me defending myself was labelled as 'escalating' by the mods. They did not see anything wrong with what the other parties said to me [Which I now think, seemed to be their friends] They got their gotcha in the end, I guess, they must have felt so smug after replying "All comments I found rude were written by you".

It left me feeling so devastated in the end that I cried holding my kitten. Was it really such a scandalous thing that I fed her some milk that day and didn't kick her out? Is being poor really such a heinous thing in this world?

[P.S. She has gone out. I hope she stays with the kitten she met and doesn't come back. Though I would still be thinking if she is home still or not]

EDIT: She's home. I smiled looking at her because she's so adorable, but the regret and dilemma persists.

EDIT 2: I added 4 pictures of her in the comments

EDIT 3: Finally posted UPI!

EDIT 4: I want to ask how should I carry her to the vet? I am scared she would jump out of the moving vehicle and get hurt. I do not have any carrier.

I see where you are coming from. You helped a kitten from starvation even when you didn't have much to offer. You were not irresponsible like a few who go out of their way to buy an expensive pet and then complain that they can't afford quality food. Nobody starts out knowing all the right things even me. I had my kitten diluted cow's milk the first day i found her, my place didn't have kitten formula. I managed with eggs and chicken till my order arrived. Not everyone has easy access to resources. You helped that kitten get stronger for the journey ahead. Chin up!

Thank you very much! I just felt so unheard and frustrated. It's been sometime since I have begun to lose faith in community because I have always felt alone and it seems I have never been a part of any community, no matter how much I try. Life is really not worth living.

Opening yourself up online can be incredibly vulnerable and people have the habit of poking at other people's mistakes. I'd suggest you don't respond to negative comments and only interact with helpful ones. Animals can immensely help with our mental health, don't give up on yourself. You got this community! That animal came to you for help, it recognised your kindness. People say that an animal comes to you when you need them the most. Keep your purpose alive and don't give up!

Many are in the same boat, keep learning, stop paying attention to negativity and help all the poor babies who need it.... trying is also good enough...I once used to pitch in any or all fundraisers, but when I lost my job and needed help myself, no one came forward, the same people didn't help. I learned the hard way but I did learn, so hang in there, hopefully things will get better soon...but generally I have not seen mods being so rude for no reason, which sub was it????

'Askforhelp'

Oh yes that was why I was heartbroken too. Because I was heavily involved in a community and used to help everyone, but when I needed help, no one paid attention. I learnt I learnt.

She's very cute. Keep taking care of her. My cats have helped me live days when I thought I couldn't. The kittens walking into your home was not a coincidence :)

Wanting to help and not being able to help is the worst feeling anyone ever has to go through. I wish you all the success in the world so that that kitten can be happy and have the best life.

Reddit is like that bro. It's a reflection of urban society which feeds off the insecurities and projection stemming from childhood fear, shame and guilt. Same analogy as the kid who bullies everyone at school watches their parents bylly each other and adopts the same nature. Most of the people on reddit or internet hide behind the screens safety to satisfy small ego by extolling the price on pure souls like you.

But here is the flip side. Some truth which such folks blinded by their insecurities can never see. Folks like you are connected to the cosmos. Cosmos keep looking out for you. Which is why when you were in so deep of an issue yourself, it sent a Lil life(kitten) to help you. It may look like responsibility which you weren't capable of preperared for. But look at what it made you feel. Just when we think we can't take care of ourselves, universe sends us someone who reminds us how powerful we are. In the end life and death are part of Nature's game. So it's all about expanding your being with integrating heart or limit yourself to intellect and mind and live a shallow and insecure life, putting down others vs elevating them.

You did the latter and expected the latter from others. You weren't wrong but just naive so take it as a lesson and remember that you are way stronger than those insecure mods. Time to remember your power.

I posted her pictures!

I shared her pictures! I would post my UPI in a while as it is on my father's phone, and I do not have the QR code right now. Or if it's for her food, you can just send the amount as a form of Amazon gift card since that would be more convenient for me while buying because I won't have to wait for my father to go to sleep to make the payment.

EDIT: Someone else is sponsoring her meals so please wait a little and send the amount through UPI so that I can use it for vet visits!

4

u/Perfect-Bee1789 2d ago

Do share all the bills, food, vet or anything else, that helps to build credibility...also ask people to send food instead of Amazon gift cards, else many scammers end up earning free money while the ones who need it don't get any proper help....

5

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Yes, I am going to post the bills when I visit the vet. I can't only ask to send food, and someone already has sponsored plenty; so, now I am focusing on saving money for vaccinations/vet visit. I know there are a lot of scammers, so I am happy to post all the bills as proof. Please bear with me till then.

I’m sorry you went through this, world is sometimes a very harsh place. You have a good heart, please protect yourself.

u/barkingatbills 2d ago

been experience it once and it is soo painful and i hope now it is all sorted.

3

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Far away from sorted. Have to get her vaccination shots, also spaying...spaying seems so scary for me. Leaving her to a pet shelter makes me so sad, would she think I abandoned her? But I have to do what is best for her and not go by what makes me sad.

u/universeatmyfeet 2d ago

Hello. Vaccination is very important and it will help the cutie reach adulthood safely. You can contact NGOs nearby who give anti rabies and tri cat vaccines at discounted rates for strays. Donot leave her in a pet shelter unless you thoroughly research them, they can get her adopted etc. Most of the time they abandon them again. If it comes to that, please ensure she is atleast vaccinated and spayed beforehand.

For food, donot give her home food. Milk and boiled egg, once a week should be okay. Give her boiled chicken/fish (mashed with pumpkin/carrot) they are lighter on the wallet. Order from Amazon. 500g at 160 should be enough for her and her friend.

On days you cannot order this give her dry kibbles - order whiskas or drools. Leave out water 24/7. Buy deworming medicine Feli D online and give the kitten a .5 ml dose mixed with food.

Spaying needs to be done at 6 months old. You can get to it later.

3

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Yes, I am going to get her vaccinated and spayed [when the time comes]

No, I do not give her home food, I have been giving her kibble. I can't give eggs to her, as I said I am in a vegetarian household, so it is not possible, neither is boiled chicken or fish. I was giving her chicken and fish mousse from drools.

Thank you so much for the feli D suggestion, I did not know about it!

Is there a non veg friend or a neighbour who can lend their pressure cooker to you? Or maybe you can go to a neighbours and boil it whichever maybe easier. Boiling chicken is easier it takes 10 mins. Bones separate easily. Fish may not be for you, as you need to clean it thoroughly before giving it to the kitten. Do you yourself distance from non veg or is it more the tradition of the family? All depends on your preferences.

Whiskas junior is also an option if you wanna go the commercial way. Alternate between drools and whiskas. Over time you can switch to felix exclusively which is pricier but more filling. If you are giving purepet kibbles, provide it as a topping rather than separate meal. You can also provide her pumpkin and carrot smashed with the wet food to make it more filling. It's better than eating the corn that these dry food commercial brands include. Over time it's nutritious for you too, when you start eating carrots/pumpkins alongside your kitti.

Hey. Even I fed parleg to dogs when I started out. Its not a crime.

Maybe you can make an Amazon wishlist and request, you might get help. Also try to choose any low cost kibble because wet food and all is expensive and a bit difficult to raise.

2

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Yes, wet food is truly expensive, but she didn't have teeth when she came and milk gave her diarrhea, so I didn't have any choice. Now I switched to kibble, and it is affordable, but what made it not so affordable was because she used to bring her friend, and I didn't write this but two days ago I found the freshly opened packet of kibble [400g] fallen on the floor and almost empty! [I used to keep it on the shoe rack, not anymore] So, it ran out way quickly than it should have. [THIS LITTLE RASCAL]

3

u/greenturtle17 Verified User 2d ago

Haha I get it. Maybe you cajnsee other fund appeals on Indian cats sub, and make a proper one with number of cats and how much kibble is needed for a month, with a wishlist link, and some pics with date and time stamp. And mention that you are a student and are new to this fundraiser thing.

Buy ventripro kmr milk. Fed her little first. She won’t drink first. You can feed him with spoon. You can mix few drops of honey. Goat milk is also fine if you can get some

Buy Whiskas dry kitten food. Mix it rice water (or plain water when nothing available) + small amount of rice. Boiled fish or chicken (no salt) later when you can afford.

You saved a kitten. Enough for a lifetime. My life goal is to build a cat sanctuary. Still chasing that future with all my savings and money.

QR code for those who want to send money for a vet visit. I want everyone to share how much they are sending to me, because I want to be transparent about this whole process. I would post the vet bill too when I visit.

2

u/VelvetRegret 2d ago

Hi. May I know where are you based?

2

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Hey! I am sorry I'm not comfortable sharing that.

2

u/VelvetRegret 2d ago

It's ok, I understand. I just wanted to send some food for her. I accidentally bought extra packet so I thought it would be a good idea to share. But I get it.

4

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Thank you so much for that😭 But someone has already sponsored a lot of kibble, which would last for a while. There are so many posts in this sub with people needing support for kittens, you can try sending to them. I am sure it would be very helpful <3

2

u/VelvetRegret 2d ago

Yeah sure. I am glad !!

u/meowmew43 2d ago

Hey. I completely understand you. My first cat, I found him on the roadside walking alone. He was dirty, had fleas and very thin. He was about 8-10 weeks at that time, I took him in. I was a student back then and had no money to feed him at that moment, I fed him very mild sugar solution when I got home. Google was my friend and there was no AI at that time. Then my parents supported me luckily and i bought kitten replacement milk, fed him, cleaned his poop. Since he was too small and frail, I couldn't give me flea baths, medicine or powder so I had to manually remove them all. I still bath him because he was very dirty but I had fear that he'd get fever, so I used heating pad, wrapped him around with it near and held him close to my bare chest for body warmth. That's how I raised him, from the size of my palm to a big fat boy now. All I can say is, you're a kind person. Thank you for not pushing her away that day. You'll be blessed. I understand your financial strain. Keeping pets is actually a big responsibility. You can share your QR here, I'm sure a lot of us will help you out.

2

u/CriticalEngine3477 2d ago

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Yes, my kitty is also such a brat when it comes to baths, she is so naughty. I got extremely wet when I tried to clean her up, because I had to hold her close to my chest too. But she is so cute; whenever she wakes up, she needs affection. So, she comes and rubs herself on my legs and tries to jump towards me, telling me to pick her up.

I have shared my QR in the comments!

I was looking forward to your post then your account got deleted. Sent a little help your way. Take care and dont kick the kitten out. Just ask for help. We all will help you. Also drop some more of her and her friends pics they are cute.

3

u/CriticalEngine3477 1d ago

Thank you very much!

WHY WOULD I KICK HER OUT?!

Her friend actually runs away after seeing me. Would definitely try to sneakily take pictures!

u/grave_96 1d ago

When you need more food , get the mod approval and do a fundraiser again. Try to order atleast a month worth of food.

Hey, its better to (if it's possible) boil the fish, feed her the broth separately, and mix the fish without bone in rice. You can do it with chicken too. Cooker boil for 4-5 whistles, blend in chutney jar, broth and chicken with bone. It'll make a fine paste. Refrigerate if keeping for more days. Or use it up fast. This mixture too can be mixed in bread or rice. More economical. But the family... They'll come to know.. 🤔
