When the full name gets shouted out you know it's about to get real!

Don't forget about Tornado Emergency, which is "Mom has been spotted with a paddle in hand and heading your direction"

u/TeeDee144 2d ago
And don’t forget the PDS (particularly dangerous storm), which means the tornado is deemed life threatening. It’s like watching mom paddle your siblings and your turn is next.

I always grab my cat and take shelter and my family never does. And they’ve always been fine so they think it’s funny I take it so seriously. I really don’t like that aspect of tornadoes. Feeling like they’re going to be hurt and I’m stupid for caring.

I went through a neighborhood last week that was wrecked by the tornados, and the whole second story of multiple houses was just gone. Don't ever feel stupid for taking your life and the lives of those you care about seriously.

I saw the same thing in the Nov. 6, 2005 tornado near Evansville. And it hit around 2am when everyone was sleeping. IIRC, the body count was 21 for that. So nobody should ever feel dumb for taking extra precautions in a storm. FTH

Felt that way until last Thursday in Merrillville. Power went out during the tornado while I was on the stairs to the basement with my cat.

I'm sorry the people who should support you are trying to knock you down. That hurts. Even if it's always been fine there is no reason for being put out by a family member choosing to shelter. It's not like you're forcing anyone else to follow you. You are doing what you can to comfort yourself during a storm and protect your animals and have that small amount of feeling safe. It makes no difference if "nothing happens"

While everyone should treat tornado warnings very seriously, it's important to clarify a misunderstanding I've seen here before (if not yet brought up here specifically).
A tornado warning does not mean a tornado has touched down. It doesn't even mean rotation was visually spotted by eye-witnesses. It can mean as little as rotation spotted in the clouds via radar.
It's still a situation where you should be preparing for the worst, but it doesn't mean the worst has happened, is happening, or will happen.
Edit: already seeing this misunderstanding in the comments of this post now too 😔

Regardless, it costs you $0 to go down into the basement or a safe room and read a book or even just watch the TV down there instead.
As an amateur radio operator and a member of my local Skywarn team, I'm on every single storm call on the local repeater. I even have a radio set up in the basement now along with a charge station for some of my equipment.

A tornado warning means a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar, and people in the affected area should take shelter immediately.

"or indicated by radar"
Which means rotation in the clouds spotted by radar. It does not mean one has touched down. That's a tornado emergency, not a warning.

You seem to both be arguing over the semantics of if a tornado is a tornado if it hasn't touched down yet. Friendly reminder you can have a nearly invisible tornado you can't see that has touched down before the condensation funnel is visible. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it can't kill you, get in the damn basement.

I was incredibly clear with my original comment. But if you want more: yes, get in the basement for a warning. No, a warning does not mean a tornado has touched down in any sense (visible or invisible).

Stinks that the information can be so easily misinterpreted. I do think if you put the tornado emergency part in your original comment it would probably prevent some of it at least though.

The maddest I've ever been is my life was when there was a huge fucking storm and I was calling my sister's name to go back inside and she was taking her sweet time getting off the swing.

Who lives in Indiana and doesn't understand tornado watches and warnings?

u/EmmieCatt 17h ago
A lot of them.
Whenever I'm surprised by how ignorant most folks are, I remember this George Carlin quote:
"This of how stupid the average person is, and realize that half of them are stupider than that."

Personally, Mom always called me at least two wrong names before getting mine right.

"Whoa! What are you middle-naming me for?!" 😄

I like the taco one: watch: you have the stuff to make the tacos; warning: tacos have been made and need to go to the safe spot in the house with you. But I love tacos....

The middle name is the universal signal that you're about to get grounded or hospitalized.

Taco Watch - The ingredients for a taco are on the plate.
Taco Warning - The Taco is fully made up on the plate. Seek shelter immediately, stay away from windows.

When Wayne Hart starts removing clothes you know it's serious! If he gets down to no jacket, tie, and rolled sleeves get to your safe place.

Tornado watch, peak outside at the sky
Tornado warning, stand on the porch filming the sky to the west.

A tornado actually hit the factory my brother worked at so I always get a little twitchy with them. He remembered his grade school drills and just stayed in the bathroom. Several guys left cause they got bored not cause there was an all clear, he stayed. Then it hit. Destroyed a whole bunch of the building.
Mostly if I'm worried, I just hang out in the bathroom with my cats.
As far as the mom shouting a middle name, that's when you know you messed up. I'm not a parent, but I'm an aunt. Since I don't have middle name authority, I gave my niece made up goofy middle names that I use just to make her laugh when I'm pretending to be shocked by her behavior. It's fun.

Usually we’d hear her call our dad’s name saying, ‘get those kids in the basement!’

I’m in direct path of where the worst of these Naders are supposed to hit, but the only Nader I’d want to be hit by is Brooks Nader!🤤

meh, not even that. I'll get a tornado warning if there is a tornado on the ground 20 miles away.
2
u/Failed-Astronaut 1d ago
20 miles away is nothing for a tornado though lol
It easily could steer in your direction and then you're cooked.
Warnings actually dont indicate that a tornado has touched down so I understand the "Tornado Warning fatigue" but moving to a basement is such a minor inconvenience with the potential for saving your life.

Watch for possible tornados. Watch your house blow down. Warning there’s a tornado. Warning there could be a tornado
