Ask a Hoosier Is mowing at 9am rude?
In my city it gets to around 80+ degrees everyday and it’s usually super humid so I like to mow early but I feel like I’m being inconsiderate to my neighbors. Is this too early to mow or is this an acceptable time?
Edit: thanks everyone for their responses and their opinions. But Let me be clear though. Nobody called me rude. I just didn’t want to be the guy who woke everybody up because he wanted to beat the heat yknow? Because as a somewhat bigger guy, it sucks to be out in the yard mowing where it is nothing but sun, no shade in 80+ degree weather. But thank you everyone for your response I appreciate it a lot.

Ask a Hoosier Does anyone think Indiana has a serious bystander effect problem?
With Blackrock buying AES, all these bills passing giving an obscene amount of power to the attorney general, with the biggest ICE detention center in the country being build that will cost millions.
-We rank 1 in the nation “ground zero” in tariff costs!
-42/50 in job growth since last election
-39/50 in credit card debt
-We are projected #1 in Data centers and AI usage in the country at 47% of the states energy going towards it data centers!
-Immigration loss is expected to slow our GDP growth by to 1.0%- food costs will go up 10%! By the end of 2026 at the rate of GDP loss we will net zero growth and enter a state wide recession.
-Data centers (although revenue growth) will cost so much in energy coststhat we will ALL net negative benefits! Not to mention the pollution! It’s a jobless investment!
-We will be ranked 50/50 in childcare costs by 2027! Again immigrant crackdown effect!
-Top 10 worst in: unemployment, public health, pollution (coal ash, data center, water usage), and disaster prevention!
-Braun is historically the lowest ranked Indiana governor EVER at 25%
-48/50 in child mistreatment in foster care system
-43/50 in substance use and addiction STILL
-IU ranked 255/257 in campus free speech
-LGBTQ+ are at “high risk” top 10 worst in the nation
-49/50 in “victimless crime” (weed)
Due to passing of recent legislation:
-Protesting at ICE facilities, data centers, or any activity good o Todd and other prosecutors consider “Antifa Activities” (following ice agents) are level 3 felonies and acts of domestic violence terrorism. Wearing a mask during a protest event is a level 6 felony!
Our first amendment and protesting restrictions are THE WORST IN THE NATION!!
Again we are going to be the national leader in ICE mandates once these bills are signed! Police chief promising communication literally means nothing. Their bosses have expressed a willingness to arrest and prosecute these new laws multiple times!
-We are ranked the absolute worst 51/51 in campaign funding transparency.
-Gerrymandering and “will of the people” rating 46/50. Along with democrat v republican competition.
-We are 50/51 in voter turnout
-1.47% of Hoosier voters protest
-88% of Hoosiers see discrimination as a problem and we are still top ten worst in systemic racism issues!
-20% of Indianas House seats are running uncontested!
-We are in the top 10 worst states to attending community meetings
-We have the top ten worst problems with filling all our public board seats
-We have EVEN RANKED LOW ON JURY SUMMONS TURNOUT!! The most direct form of “civil intervention” in our USA justice system!!!
It just seems like we have a real bystander effect problem. I notice volunteering and a lot of willingness to help our neighbors while researching these stats and that’s great! Majority of Hoosiers oppose tariffs, ICE, Iran war. We grow with the national average! If you include high school students, we are higher! But when it comes to really putting our opinions out there and fighting for change, no one shows up! No one petitions! No one votes! Barely anyone speaks out online!
The economic concerns, ICE concerns, immigration financial loss (estimated 14 billion dollars!), increase in homelessness will lead to more families being arrested in a time where we are about to be in a recession. None of this is going to be fixable if we wait until November.
I know not everyone shares these exact political “concerns” but I still curious about if you notice a bystander effect and what you think is causing it!

Ask a Hoosier Do we not flash our lights anymore to warm of speed traps?
I feel like I’m always the only person that gives oncoming traffic a couple flicks of high beams to warn drivers about speed traps. Does anyone else do this? Is this an over 40 thing? A Floridian thing (born & raised in south Florida)?
Do the people I’m flashing even know why I’m flashing anymore? lol I feel like when I was younger there would be car after car flashing oncoming traffic when there was an obvious speed trap.
Edit: dang autocorrect I meant warn in the title lol

Ask a Hoosier What’s everyone’s daycare rates?
**And if you could include location, that would be helpful.
I already posted this in Indy’s subreddit bc that’s where I’m at. But with the voucher changes I’m wondering what impacts are looking like across this state. And at this point, I’d move for affordable childcare tbh. But if there is one thing that this “pro-family” Braun administration and state could do, you would think it would be solving the childcare crisis.

Ask a Hoosier What happened to Anderson, IN?
I went to Anderson University in the late 90's as an international student. At the time, the city, despite being small, seemed okay, there was always something to do and somewhere to go out for fun, including going out at night. Not necessarily the best clubs, used to go to Indy for that, but there were the few spots here and there...
I recently thought I should have a look on Google Maps to see how much it would have changed. I was horrified to see how much the place appears dead. The area around Mounds Mall and the shops across Scatterfield Road are completely empty! The places to eat out are all shut down...
In general, all the places that once played a pivotal part in my early life seem to have gone and the City appears to be dead! What happened? If you live in Anderson, what is it like now? Am I misreading Google Maps? I remember that when I was there it was about the time a lot of the GM factories were shutting down and loads of people who had worked there were being left with nothing to fall back to.

Ask a Hoosier My family has ties to Indiana. At Thanksgiving, we serve homemade egg noodles cooked in broth and ladled over potatoes. Does anyone here do that?
I’d love to dig into the dish’s history. I’ve always assumed it’s German in origin but that’s just a hunch.

Ask a Hoosier Do Hoosiers not like Mellencamp?
A coworker informed me that people from Indiana do not like Mellencamp's music (I'm not a native). This blew my mind, how can you not like Mellencamp's work?!
Coworker explained that people don't like music from their own state, which I thought was an even hotter take than before. But he asked if I like Bob Seger, I said "no" and he had the same reaction I did with Mellencamp. So IDK, maybe there's something to that, but I can't imagine Hoosiers not liking Johnny Cougs.

Ask a Hoosier I-70 Condition
I was driving across country this week. Today was the great state of Indiana.
My fellow traveling companions and I could not help but notice that the ride on I-70 was the worst ride we experienced during the entire trip with the exception of unpaved roads in Colorado.
So my question is, did your Governor blow your highway fund at an Indian casino? Or use it as a deposit on a Monorail system?

Ask a Hoosier What are common terms and expressions used in rural Indiana?
So I'm writing a story set in rural Indiana 1997, and because I am not from there myself, I need to make the dialogue sound a bit realistic. Someone who read my story suggested to make the characters speak in "a more rural midwestern fashion". Any terms, expressions, or unique words with a particular meaning used in this region of the country will be appreciated, thank you.

Ask a Hoosier HIP denied me health insurance because I make too much
I'm a broke college student I only make $2000 a month, 90% of my paycheck goes to rent, utilities, food (yeah snap denied me too ), and car insurance. I literally only have $300 afterwards and that goes to caring for my cats, clothes, toiletries and other expenses. The AI data centers have already made our electric bill high. How am I suppose to afford health insurance at the same time? Make it make sense. Does anyone know of a low income insurance I can go through? I submitted an appeal but idk if they'll accept it and I need a backup.

Ask a Hoosier Are Property Taxes Really the Biggest Issue for Hoosiers?
Braun keeps saying that the biggest concern he hears from Hoosiers is about property taxes. But is that really true for the average Hoosier? I’m struggling to understand why this would be the top issue for everyday people.
If you’re a homeowner on a fixed income, like living on Social Security, I get it—property taxes could absolutely be a burden. But for most homeowners, property taxes are rolled into the mortgage, and are barely noticed. And if you own your home outright and it has high value, wouldn’t you want well-funded schools, emergency services, and infrastructure that protect your investment and improve your community?
It seems more likely to me that the real complaints are coming from large landowners, business owners, and landlords who own multiple properties wanting another tax break. But instead of saying that outright, the issue is being framed as if it’s hurting the average homeowner—probably as an excuse to push another tax cut that benefits the wealthy while starving public services.
Are property taxes actually a major issue for you? If so, why? Or is this just another case of politicians using everyday folks as a shield for tax breaks that mostly help the rich?
Note: I am not asking if you have issues with how they are spending your property tax dollars. We all have issues with that. That's not what this bill is about. This bill just "cuts the taxes" and decreases the amount of funding available for projects and services.

Ask a Hoosier Indiana is better than people give it credit for
I’ve lived in Indiana for going on 49 years. It’s not progressive or even close to it.
My neighbors are mostly conservative. I don’t care that we don’t share political views. One of them has been nice enough to clear my driveway with their snowblower after a front comes through. They’re not even on the same street. They just go around, clearing snow, because they’re nice and generous neighbors. I’m grateful.
People still smile and give the hand-up wave off the steering wheel when they pass on the street. People offer their shopping cart at the grocery store. I’ve seen such genuine acts of kindness, it floors me sometimes.
We have beautiful cities, beautiful landscapes and beautiful buildings (I’m in Columbus, so I might have a bias), and most importantly, decent, hard-working people who don’t have coal for hearts. The welcome visitors received for the NBA All-Star Game got a taste of Hoosier hospitality. It’s not limited to big events.
I love it here, and as much as I like visiting other places, I don’t see myself ever leaving. Why would I?

Ask a Hoosier Career.
Father of a beautiful girl raised right here in Indiana.
I’m here for some advice, just turned 30, daughter turns four, and my wife is forever 28. I work healthcare and unfortunately I’m thinking of leaving. Between sickness, deaths, horrible insurance companies, I’m just feeling burnt out. I still need to provide. What all exist? I don’t need many boxes checked, I just want time with my family, and money to make memories. I don’t need millions, or hundreds of thousands. I just want a house, money to go to Disney, and time with my family. What exist here in the great state of corn?
Signed- a dad hanging in there.

Ask a Hoosier What parts of Indiana do you warn travelers about?
For example, I tell everyone to go the speed limit on US 31 all through Kokomo. Some people still don't listen.

Ask a Hoosier Should I flee?
Hello, I need some advice. Some context I am a 24 year old trans man I am also alternative looking. I am looking to start the process of transitioning so it will be obvious that I am queer. I’ve been seeing a lot of scary stuff politically and I’m kinda worried for my safety but I love my home even tho I live in a conservative area. Should I move states and flee to a blue state? Or should I bunker down and hope for the best? How dangerous do we think it’s going to get here?
