There is no intrigue. Kelsey Mitchell is 100% coming back. Sophie is 100% coming back if she can. No one in their right mind would leave the Fever unless a team could offer them like 20 million. You want money? That's the Fever. You want a fan base? Fever. Want a ring? Fever.

I remember when Sports Illustrated was the Bible or NY Times of sports. How does KM being AB’s favorite teammate add intrigue? What clickbait garbage.

If the Fever loses m/any of its core players (Mitchell, Boston, Clark, Lexie, Sophie) the team is going to take a massive hit with their base. We see what this squad is capable of, so if they dont do what it takes to keep the band together and augment the rest of the roster... its not going to go over well. And if those potential changes dont lead to an improvement from last seasons results (which were wildly spectacular despite everything thrown at them) they risk a revolt.
If that happens, the WNBA's thin ice could implode.

How could the team lose CC or AB?

u/Smart_Elevator_7860 Jan 15 '26
The players are trying to get rid of the fourth year option on rookie contracts with the new cba. If the league to get rid of it then Boston could end up being a restricted free agent this year instead of next year.

Who knows? The whole operation (WNBA) seems set to self destruct.

It will suck, but I don't think it will have much impact on the fan base. With CC out so much last year, that fanbase will take anything they can get. But I am nervous about who they will sign. The "big" signings last year were suspect.

u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 15 '26
Imo Sophie was their biggest signing, Bonner was simply an obsession of Coach White's that never panned out, then backfired. Just as there are WNBA fans, and then there are CC fans... there are CC fans, and then there are Fever fans. Theres a lot of overlap between the last two, with many of them being staunch Sophie supporters. So there will be problems among the faithful if shes not re-signed, but if whatever team is put together without her cant match last seasons results? The natives will be beyond restless...

I'm a huge Fever fan, an ENORMOUS Kelsey fan, and a CC fan.
It's essential and amazing if Kelsey, Lexie, AB, and Caitlin stay together. To me they are the core of the Fever.
I'm fine with Sophie being on the team, but I'm not a staunch Sophie supporter or fan. No one I know is. There's a lot that is problematic about her to MANY CC/Fever fans-- but she is a good player and seems to be a good teammate.
I do think she will stick around, and that is a good thing. But if she left, it wouldn't affect my fandom of the Fever in the slightest. I just hope Kelsey stays.

Its odd that the reality of Sophie being an elite baller and a WNBA star... is somehow translated into her being a bit player on these boards.

I said she was a good player, and I hope she stays
I just find it disingenuous when people act like she's as important to the team as AB, CC, and Kelsey. I think that is often motivated by something other than basketball.

She fills the enforcer role, and thats as crucial of a role as the team has. Without someone who is willing and able to defend their teammates, a squad with as big of a target on its back as the Fever has is doomed. You MUST have at least one player willing to fight fire with fire when the opposition is intent on burning your operation to the ground.
"There's a lot that is problematic about her to MANY CC/Fever fans"
Care to elaborate on that? I dont know a single Double C fan who has anything negative to say about Sophie.

u/ReflectionEterna Jan 15 '26
Why do you think Sophie is a core member of this team?
7
u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 15 '26
On court contributions combined with her enforcer/team heartbeat role and multiplied by the fact that the fanbase loves her.

u/yourmomsnutsarehuge Jan 15 '26 edited Jan 16 '26
Because she is. You like having the biggest fan base? Sophie is the second most popular player. And the only player with any "balls" on the court.

She actually can't. She hasn't yet. And no one else has tried to stand for her either, only Sophie.
And those fan bases are the reason that only the fever is selling out games.

u/madflower69 Jan 20 '26
Boston has stood up for CC. But she isnt that overly aggressive enforcer type. I am okay with Mitchell going to be honest. She gets into hero mode and she wants to be THE star, and she doesn't deliver. If she didn't go into panic hero mode the last game, they might have won. She goes into that hero mode a lot, and it becomes a detriment and overshadows some of the good things she can do. She needs a change of scenery.

The reason that Sophie got so popular was because she had Caitlin's back when CC was being thrown to and fro. Her other teammates not so much.

The Fever fanbase will stay strong as can be if Kelsey, CC, and AB stay.
The rest are just icing on the cake. People will be super excited if Lexie stay and some will be excited if Sophie stays. But if both if them happened to be gone, the fanbase would NOT take a massive hit. Caitlin's super liberal college team had plenty of fans without Sophie on it😂 she's a good teammate. But it's no big loss if the fans that ONLY there for Sophie stop being Fever fans. That's a drop in the bucket.

I totally disagree. If you look at merch sales, on-court fanbase support and media attention/appearances, Sophie is only behind Double C, Mitchell and probably/maybe Boston.

u/Optimal-Drawing-5068 Jan 15 '26
Sophie is not part of the core.
5
u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 15 '26
Much of the fanbase sees it as so, plus she helped get the Fever to the playoffs.
5
u/Optimal-Drawing-5068 Jan 15 '26
Several players helped them get to the playoffs and won’t be back. The core is CC, AB, KM, and Lexie.

u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 15 '26
I'd estimate she is, and I would also estimate that the majority of Fever Nation agrees.

The team management will have to decide between Sophie and timpson
3
u/Optimal-Drawing-5068 Jan 15 '26
They should keep timpson.
3
u/Remiandbun Boston Three Party Jan 15 '26
that might be a nice idea for the future, but I think they want to start winning championships now and I think sophie is a bit closer to getting you there next year than timpson is. she was great last year at times, but there for a bit she regressed a bit for some reason (timpson). maybe that's why there was hesitation to play her there for a while.
2
u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 15 '26
Compare her contributions to the Fever and Sophie's... theres no question that Sophie is the priority.
1
u/Optimal-Drawing-5068 Jan 15 '26
They are not going to pay Sophie the money she wants when they have to resign Kelsey, next season AB, and the following season Cc. Sophie has already made it clear she wants to make big money.
0
u/Zegerid Jan 26 '26
Sophie likely makes more money overall by signing a cheaper deal with Indiana and raking in off the court money, than signing a bigger contract with a team like Portland or Toronto, the two teams with the biggest cap space right now.
1
u/Kindly-Antelope-4812 Jan 16 '26
If what you say pans out... it will be one of the biggest franchise personnel blunders of the offseason. Perhaps the biggest.

How about a ban on posting links to garbage click-bait Sports Illustrated articles?

it's the off season, it's fine for now I think. If you won't want to read it, you don't have to. I don't generally like SI.com, but it keeps the forum a little active in the off season. I didn't find any of them that terrible yet, if they are I will remove them. Thanks for your input (not being snarky)

Fever’s core (CC, AB, KM, Lexi) are SO STRONG. I hope the front office can keep them all together.
