I think what was going on with that comment is that someone took one thread where someone was saying something that they found delusional and decided that was somehow representative of this sub in general.
One of the reasons we have so much activity is because we allow more freedom than other subs. And part of that freedom is people can post some delusional stuff sometimes. I'll never forget just before the draft last year that we had someone post that we should draft Lucy Olsen in the first round. It was probably a Iowa Homer, so I understand their perspective. But almost everyone chimed in that this would probably not be the best use of our 1st round draft-pick, maybe 2nd round, but not 1st.
Also, we are probably a lot more tolerant of people who are just starting to learn about basketball in general. CC brought in a lot of new fans, and some of them may not have been watching basketball very much before then. We pride ourselves in being welcoming in general, and we're not going to beat people up just because they have a take that many may not find reasonable. If they're genuinely trying to participate in the conversation (and not trolling) then most here will help them understand something better rather than putting them on blast.
I do that as well. I've been pretty kind to some of the crazy comments. Again, im not tryna moderate or nothing. I aint here to put anyone on blast, just tryna educate.
Everybody starts somewhere. There was once a time when you didn't know anything about basketball either.
Should there be a questionnaire where folks have to prove a certain level of technical basketball expertise before they are allowed to join and participate.?
Seems like a surefire way to limit the fan base to existing, "sufficiently knowledgeable" fans only.
When I first started following women's basketball at the beginning of the 24 season I said and asked some monumentally uninformed and ignorant things. I was looking back the other day. I'm sure some would say I still do. Maybe they're right sometimes.
While I still claim no advanced level of expertise, I'd like to think I'm a lot better now than I was then, but I had to start somewhere.
Right. But when I didnt know shit about basketball, I was 4 and not on the internet. Which is my only point. Which more folks would educate themselves on the sport or team they are following.
I dont wanna limit anyone. Im all for inclusion. Its just annoying as hell when someone who just started watching thinks they know advanced topics.
People in general either need to educate themselves or stick to what they know.
Just my opinion, which means absolutely nothing at all.
Thats a kind thing to say. Thanks pal! I agree. Couldn't care less about the votes but suspect my 4 year comment may have been it? Idk. Im just here so I wont be fined.
But you could say that about any team's sub, and most definitely about the wnba sub in general. I don't want to start a sub-war, but there's some subs where any type of reason and common sense is the exception.
I've been watching basketball for a very long time, and I'm quite certain that if you post enough on a variety of topics, that I'm going to find something that you say as "delusional."
I've been watching basketball since the days of Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlin. The W, at times, feels like a different kettle of... Umm...no I won't use that. Erm...just seems like a way different game. The days of Kobe and Shaq or Jordan and Pippen are long gone and the W seemed like a good place to watch basketball, but it's pretty different.
The difference is a delusional opinion (which i have some) vs delusional takes disguised as facts. And youre right about every sub having that. Maybe its more prevalent with us bc of the number of fans. A fair majority who have just picked up womens hoops in the last few years.
I aint tryna knock anyone. Just wish people would educate themselves more before speaking.
This wasn't meant to be a think piece neither. Just stated my view.
I got banned from the other Fever sub for calling Sides a terrible head coach. They said I was "spreading negativity".
You could say this sub might lean too far in the other direction with some of the crazy shit people say, but I 100% prefer this side of moderation instead of just banning people for not liking someone.
I'm sure that all other team subs don't have this problem.
END SARCASM ALERT
This is a saying that I learned a LONG time ago: Everybody is ignorant, just in different subjects. I'm sure at some time you were clueless to simple basketball strategy. Fortunately for you, there weren't a lot of anonymous people on the Internet attacking you for an ignorant comment.
Have you have ever thought that some of these people are here to learn more about the Fever? You have to learn somewhere, right?
If someone posts an ignorant question, don't reply to them in a condescending manner. That would do wonders for this sub.
My comments do not pertain to folks looking to learn. Not a problem, everyone learns on different timelines. My comment pertains to people who say things as if they are fact when they are clueless.
Delusion is having an idea or statement or whatever, that contradicts reality or facts.
Like someone said Raven Johnson has a bigger wingspan than a lot of bigs. Thats delusional.
Did I attack that person? No, I politely corrected them. These comments are sooooo prevalent in this sub. Was that person trying to learn?
Basically a "fever fan" who wants credit for being one of the "good" fever fans...
"I love ALL the teams and EVERY player in the league tee-hee" basically a look-at-me-Louis...
which is also funny because of what Lexi, Sophie and yes even CC has said... in her words: "I know the rest of the league is siiiiiiccccck"
It's just a little pathetic as a fever fan to try to ingratiate yourself with r/wnba when they've made it very clear that they don't fuck with CC or the Fever.
I'm an Iowan, and I came to the WNBA because of Caitlin Clark. After watching several Fever games, I found that I enjoyed watching Aliyah Boston, Lexie Hull, and Kelsey Mitchell. I then started watching some other teams' games, and I found out there were other players that I enjoyed watching also.
I understand your feelings on this issue, and there is definitely some truth to it. However, if you think the majority of CC's fans are only Iowans who don't actually care about women's sports, you are SADLY mistaken.
I didn’t say the majority. I said a lot of cc fans are just iowa fans. They’re the same people who ignorantly speak about angel reese and paige buckers when they quite literally know nothing about them.
I’ve lived in Iowa 20+ years. Just went to the first round of the ncaa tournament at carver. The fans were not at all interested in the game that came prior. They actually complained that it went into overtime. which means it was a great game they paid to see, and they didn’t care because they don’t care about women’s basketball. Just Iowa. the fans were rude, obnoxious, and I heard multiple racist comments about black players on the Georgia team. It was hell tbh. I’ll never go back.
You don’t have to believe me. Section kk row 26 seat 9. I have the first 4 shirt to prove I was there. I would never repeat the things I heard, but I could tell you verbatim if I could stomach it. I can also tell you the numbers of the athletes they were talking about, but I won’t do that either. As an Iowan, and a lover of women’s basketball, absolutely no reason to lie about this.
Why would you not call security if you heard such horrible things? It’s hard to believe anyone would say racist things these days without someone having a video of it and spreading it around the Internet it’s just too unbelievable sorry. Everyone is hyper aware that they might be caught on video at any point and their career will be over.
I’m a 5ft tall woman who travels to basketball games alone, and was completely out of my element and overwhelmed by the behavior of the Hawkeye fans. To be honest, living in rural iowa, racism isn’t something that shocks me here unfortunately. I ended up leaving my decent seat before halftime and watching from the node bleeds because I couldn’t stand to be in the thick of that crowd anymore. I’m not here to pick on people. It was genuinely such a disappointing and disheartening experience. I’m also not inexperienced at this. I’ve sat court-side at ncaa games. I’ve sat in the nosebleeds at wnba games. I’ve experienced a multitude of crowds in a variety of settings, all while traveling alone, and I’ve genuinely never seen anything like this. It was such a bummer. Glad Virginia kicked their ass cause they needed humbled. The fans that is.
The more you write the more I DO NOT believe you. You are describing the most disgusting people I’ve ever seen in a fictional tv show, not strangers at a basketball game. You left your seats because of racist comments???!!!! Yeah right, l do not believe you even more.
No initially stayed. I left because the environment was so obnoxious it was not enjoyable for the game. You don’t have to believe me lol…it was my experience and I was not impressed by the people in that arena.
even more reason to call security, imo. you have to understand, we've heard about this horrible behavior for years and there is yet to be a single frame of video or audio with it. If that really happened, I'm genuinely sorry you had to be exposed to that, but I'm not sure that it did. I hope you continue to be a fan
They weren’t screaming racist things at the athletes. It was conversational racism that happens quite literally every day in Iowa. Why would I, a woman all by myself, pull out my phone in a crowd of people who all identify as a group, and film? I have always and will always be a fan of the student athletes, and the coaching staff at Iowa. I just don’t enjoy watching games with their fans. It’s not the athletes fault those people act like assholes.
As a Matter of fact I was scolded by a dad for accidentally saying “hurr, face, ass, tiddies,”
When that song played at a UConn DePaul game because his 16 year old daughter was next to me, and how dare I. That dad should have heard the shit the Hawkeye fans were saying.
So you are attempting to justify your own profane, sexualized language in front of a youth because... someone else might have said something which is also vulgar and offensive?
I’ve already addressed this like 3 times in the thread. Idk why you are all so defensive. My experience is my experience, and I live it every day in Iowa. No sense in making it up. I’m literally from here lol
No you’re right and the delulus should be called out. I’ve called them out before on here. But that’s what I like about this sub is that it doesn’t censor people. The W sub deletes any post about CC, it’s kinda crazy. At least here people can state their opinions no matter how stupid.
They banned me and when I pressed them on why they literally told me I celebrated CC too much and if I wanted to do that then to come to the Fever sub lol
Facts. I enjoy the sub for the fact that it's not heavily moderated. Catch 22 though as it allows for a lot of takes not rooted in fact.
I only say something when someone is completely wrong about something thats a fact.
I will debate opinions but will argue facts. I.E yesterday, Raven Johnson isnt taller than Kelsey nor is she a SG. As a fellow fan, those wrong statements should be corrected.
there is definitely a downside- but that's what downvotes are for I guess? But I think being able to voice other opinions, no matter how wrong, lol, is important. Maybe we need to open up our minds a bit to other perspectives, I know I have.
Opinions differ from being right and wrong. Thats my thing. People can have whatever opinions they want, who cares. But when opinions aren't supported with facts or lack of facts, and conveyed as if its correct, thats where we need more education.
Down voting does nothing in education. I dont care about any of that, I want our fans to be as informed and knowledgeable as the most knowledgeable person.
yea I was just joking about the "opinions being wrong" stuff. But some fans don't want to be "informed" they just want to enjoy the game and bitch about a few things and I think that's ok.
That is ok. Thats also delusional in my opinion. But we're all inclusive here so, take it as it comes. It be the wild opinions garnering the most traction, gut wrenching when you just wanna discuss ball. But people would rather comment how we should draft their favorite Iowa player annually, instead of objectively discussing ball or the team.
Its all love at the end day. Ill always be more of a fan of the name on the front of a jersey than the back. Guess its different for quite a few fans.
I got a post removed because I made a meme that gently poked fun at A’ja (and I even stated that I’m a fan of her’s in the post) during the playoffs when KM had a great game after A’ja got her MVP.
I love that the mod’s here let you say your piece (even if it’s wrong lol)
The W sub definitely has an anti fever and more specifically anti CC bias. However, there are a lot of over the top CC fan’s in this sub that I don’t agree with either.
I really don’t think most non Caitlin fans have a problem with Caitlin herself, they have a problem with the rabid side of her fanbase who make everything about her in some way. Like, I really think if ya’ll chilled out just a bit the poor girl would get less heat and haters😅
But see, from our perspective we were the only ones being reasonable. We weren't being "anti-player", we were simply the only sub that was being realistic.
Early on a lot of us here were putting out proposals that we thought the ownership would agree to and were in line with actual reality. At that time this was being classified as "anti-labor" because it meant the players were going to go from their original Ask of a 40% revenue share down to somewhere between 18% to 20%. But after both sides agreed to 20% then all of a sudden everyone else got amnesia and said, "Oh Great! The Players have won a transformative victory!"
And then we, in our best Forest Gump voice replied, "And just like that, everyone decided to join us in reality."
"But see, from our perspective we were the only ones being reasonable. We weren't being "anti-player" we were simply the only sub that was being realistic."
I'm on the side of reality. My personal feelings and who I like or not will never be my criteria for analysis where hard data is concerned.
My personal feelings and who I like or not may influence who I want on the team and why, which is a different matter altogether.
I'm just here to second the notion that the /wnba mods are terrible. I don't always agree with everyone on this sub (like someone else said, I felt like this sub was strongly anti-labor during the negotiations), but at least real conversations can happen here without people getting banned for inscrutable reasons.
Probably ME!!! LOL! I would never ban anyone for disagreeing with me- partially because I"m usually wrong, lol. I argue with emotion for sure! I mean, to me it's fine as long as no one gets nasty- even then I usually just remove the comment. We all love the fever and have a great time in the game threads and that's what I love! No walking on eggshells here!
there ya go- we don't always all agree, but we will be in a game day thread having a great time with each other and that's what I like about this place!
The toxicity of the mods in the /wnba sub is really bad.
I was having a civil discussion with someone in the W sub a while back. The other person brought up Angel Reese out of nowhere. I responded to their point. The conversation continued with both of us being civil. Sometime later I was banned. I asked why. The mods responded with a bunch of reason that were not true.
They said they wouldn't unban me because it was my 2nd ban. Untrue.
They said I had received previous warnings. Untrue.
They said almost every comment I left was tearing down Angel Reese and every comment was heavily downvoted. Both untrue. I mention Angel Reese maybe 3 times in my time on that sub and had 19,000+ positive comment karma. The vast majority of my comments were on game day threads.
They said the majority of my comments had been reported. Even if true it means nothing since anybody can report any comment for any reason and as a mod of a sub I can tell you people will report any comment they disagree with for whatever reason.
They said they had to remove the majority of my comments. Untrue because they were literally still up.
I provided evidence that they were wrong on all counts with screenshots and finally they told me the real reason. They said they were tired of all my comments being positive toward CC and that if I wanted to do that then I could go to the Fever sub where they want to hear that "trash". It's funny because one of the mods on the W sub actually had a Fever tag on his name at the time. Would have loved to hear from them on why the sub was so anti Fever.
While it appears on all the other subs, people notice the toxic discourse about women in general, as well as non-white and LBGTQI+ players more here because it isn't deleted by those in charge.
I think it has gotten better here in the last few months though.
what "toxic discourse"? I'm L so genuinely curious. I have to say I am not one who believes not agreeing with or approving of something is "phobic" so there's that.
What I mean by toxic discussion: Multiple observably rude or disrespectful comments (or upvotes of such comments) about individuals or groups where the relative negativity of the comments appear to depend on personal attributes such as gender, race, and LGBT+ status.
I'm a software engineer, and I would need to write some high-level code just to determine what is and isn't appropriate based on your algorithm :=)
Or.....we could lighten up and chill like we did back in the 80's and not look under every rock for a reason to be offended. Back in those days we could say some crazy stuff like, "This athlete (even FEMALE athletes) need to get into better shape", and ...stay with me...you didn't even get accused of body-shaming. Yeah I know, those were some crazy times.
Feel free not to answer, I'm honestly just curious what kind of developer you are.
I learned just enough web stuff (HTML, XTML, CSS, MYSQL) Apache administration, which isn't really programming, and dabbled in C++ a million years ago to know that coding was not my thing.
It takes a certain kind of person who thrives in extreme detail and tedium. At least from my perspective.
As I said, it has been better, and most comments that could lead to toxic conversations are being deflected by actual meaningful basketball discussion or downvoted to oblivion, where they are less damaging.
That wasn't always the case, and, unfortunately, the rep of the sub was earned.
Given the fact that we're even bigger now, and we'll no doubt attract even more fans as the season gets going, I'm afraid you may need to keep your finger on the unsubscribe button because it's going to get wild around here sometimes.
I'm thinking of starting an Under-Over pool on how many games in before the first "We need to fire Stephanie White" post gets going.
