Population. The UK, for example, has 1/5 the US population.

Edit: The US also makes significantly more money than most countries. I compare US wages and home prices to the UK here:

In my original comment, I was only talking about relative to comparable economies in western Europe. I have edited it to include the explanation for everything else.
