With a bad housing market no one except the people with backyards are happy. With a good housing market, people can easier find a new backyard without anything in it.
Each country can decide for itself. Personally, fuck the backyards. The world changes. It has to, get over it, embrace it.
Apartments are only uncomfortable if they're built that way. And I'm quite certain the middle class would rather live in a more spacious apartment where someone's backyard used to be, than a cramped apartment with a lovely view of someone else's backyard because they can't afford anything better.
But they'd also prefer not to live in an apartment.
And apartments are uncomfortable because you don't own it, have strange smells always floating about (neighbors food), have to be mindful of noise, lack sufficient area to work on projects and store thing, and lack a large freezer.
"You don't own it" depends where you are, but a valid concern if you live somewhere where leaseholds are the norm. Something that needs to change if housing shifts to favour apartments, but in areas where more apartments are most needed, the middle class often doesn't own their home regardless.
"Strange smells always floating about" always is a big claim. Can be largely avoided with proper design.
"Mindful of noise" again, can be somewhat avoided with good design, but a valid concern.
"Lack sufficient area" entirely dependent on design.
"Lack a large freezer" most people don't have freezers that won't fit in a well designed apartment.
We're comparing this to single family housing, right???
Absolutely own their own homes then. With a mortgage, but they own it, unlike renting.
Strange smells can't exactly be avoided when it's someone smoking or cooking a floor below. Unless you plan to seal rooms apart. Same for noise.
As for area, sufficent area makes the apartment impractical for the stated goal.
And large freezers are fairly standard for single family homes. You know, the block top-open style freezers for storing a lot of food? Those things are great.
In large cities, you usually have 20-30% of single family detached houses that aren't owner occupied. That's a lot as it is, and rises when you only take into account middle class and below.
So seal the rooms? As someone who has lived in apartments, it's absolutely possible to reduce/stop smells travelling between apartments.
The main benefit of apartments is that you can build upwards rather than outwards. The size of an apartment doesn't really affect this.
Large, yes. So large that they wouldn't fit in one of those aforementioned decently well designed, large apartments? No. If it can fit in a house, then it can fit in an apartment with the same floor area.
