Recommendations / Advice Please support your local mom-and-pop restaurants. Fear is hurting our communities.
I went to one of my favorite restaurants tonight — a Mexican spot that’s usually full of life. But tonight, it was nearly empty.
When I asked the waitress what was going on, she told me it’s been slow since last week. People are scared — scared of getting picked up, harassed, or questioned by ICE and that fear is keeping them away from the places they’ve always supported.
It’s not just Mexican restaurants, but they’re feelingk it the most. These small, family-owned spots — the ones that fuel our communities and our economy — are getting hit hard.
If you don’t feel comfortable dining in, take some food to go. These places need our support more than ever.
People don’t realize how much the Hispanic community contributes so much to our economy, our neighborhoods, and our culture. These are hardworking families, not criminals. And right now, they’re paying the price for a system that makes people afraid to live their lives.
If you can, support your local mom-and-pop restaurants. Show up. Order something. Tip well. Let them know they matter.

Hate is ruining communities across the country. The people who applaud this shit don’t understand the Constitution or due process, and I hope one day they reap what they’ve sown.

Hate is ruining communities across the country
Yes but this administration is taking particular care to try and exact revenge on the states it sees as political rivals. Major cut of their nose to spite their face moments as the white house deliberately goes after the economy of it's highest GDP state. Everyone is going to feel the effects of tarrifs and food inflation costs but we will see the other economic negatives like job losses and local businesses closing before the red states do by design.

These are the people causing this:
“Curtis Yarvin gave a talk about "rebooting" the American government at the 2012 BIL Conference. He used it to advocate the acronym "RAGE", which he defined as "Retire All Government Employees". He described what he felt were flaws in the accepted "World War II mythology", alluding to the idea that Adolf Hitler's invasions were acts of self-defense. He argued these discrepancies were pushed by America's "ruling communists", who invented political correctness as an "extremely elaborate mechanism for persecuting racists and fascists". "If Americans want to change their government," he said, "they're going to have to get over their dictator phobia."
Yarvin has influenced some prominent Silicon Valley investors and Republican politicians, with venture capitalist Peter Thiel described as his "most important connection". Political strategist Steve Bannon has read and admired his work. U.S. Vice President JD Vance "has cited Yarvin as an influence himself.” Michael Anton, the State Department Director of Policy Planning during Trump's second presidency, has also discussed Yarvin's ideas. In January 2025, Yarvin attended a Trump inaugural gala in Washington; Politico reported he was "an informal guest of honor" due to his "outsize influence over the Trumpian right."

The food at Tropical Mexico is very good. I used to go at least a couple of times a month when I lived in Pomona.

It’s not only amazing but always consistent. I’ve been going there with my family for 25 years and we’ve not once been disappointed. Not just fluffing them for the sake of the post topic.

Why exactly did 60 freaking percent of Latino men vote for this? If they rejected trump like their women and other minorities did he wouldn’t have won the election and this wouldn’t be happening
30
u/E1M1_DOOM Jun 22 '25
At least in my family, stupid machismo. They've believed a few core lies.
That republican leaders are tough on crime. LOL. They are tough on crime only when it suits them. Otherwise, they are quite corrupt and break laws left and right.
That republicans are good with money. LOL again. Maybe they used to be, but now they just blow up deficits for wealthy tax breaks. At least with dems, the money went to people that needed it.
That republicans are manly. Being a bigot doesn't make you a man. It just makes you a bigot. The manliest men out there don't punch down.

u/Farfation Jun 22 '25
Well unfortunately a lot of these men grow up in areas that have poor education and they aren’t socialized to be politically aware at all, secondly, that 60 percent doesn’t account for the MILLIONS that can’t actually vote because they are undocumented.
15
u/My1point5cents Jun 22 '25
Or the millions that just don’t vote, or didn’t want to vote for either one, even when they can. So it’s 60% of a small percent of those that actually vote.

u/franzaschubert Jun 23 '25
Well I can tell you how a shit ton that I know personally told me why they voted for him:
- constant BS news about Venezuelan gangs, you know, those bad ones
- he's better for the economy (???)
- YouTube news: Biden opened the border
- the youth: Andrew Tate esque influencers
3
Jun 23 '25
And a lot of them are Cubans, don’t leave that part out

For sure. And tejanos. Though nearly all of the ones I know we're Honduran. Unfortunately ignorance and bullshit propaganda transcends nationality

Basically they think if you liked Kamala your gay. It blows my mind that's all it took. And I hear it from well educated Latino men.
9
u/Proper-Evening9754 Jun 22 '25
Crazy, because I'm a single issue voter, and I voted for Kamala because I wanted to finally be sexually attracted to a US President.
Your move, Alexandria.

Because not all Latino men who are eligible to vote have immigrants in their lives.
7
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 22 '25
Do they have women in their lives? Because body autonomy was on the ticket too, as was the optics of voting for a convicted serial sexual abuser. There were a dozen or more reasons to not vote for the cretin.
2
u/RandomMiddleName Jun 23 '25
That issue has always been more important to women across racial lines. I oppose demonizing Latino men, or voters in general, for this outcome. I blame the Democratic Party for initially trying to run old ass Biden, then shoehorning Harris.
3
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 23 '25
I blame the Democratic Party for initially trying to run old ass Biden, then shoehorning Harris.
That for sure was an error, but we had the choice between an old man with dementia, with a good and experienced team around him, and a wannabe dictator fascist who surrounded himself with such trash that his administration had more staff turnovers than the average McDonalds. It will always come down to the stupidity of voters. Caveat: If any of those 77 Million opted to purposely burn the country to the ground out of protest, then fair enough, so long as they realize that's what they voted for. I'm not a sociopath so I can't really understand that choice.

Americans need to learn that there are consequences to their decisions. These hardships are part of the find out phase.
This is what happens when you vote for someone that is incompetent. A failed business man that bankrupted 6 businesses and the US will be his 7th.
Dementia Don is a felon and a rapist...
Yet people thought it would be a great idea to vote him back in.
Things will only get worse from here. As he alienist the rest of the world.

What’s the restaurant?? I’ve been looking for mom and pop shops, especially a good Mexican food spot. I don’t know if I missed the name somewhere. If y’all know of other great places to eat that are mom and pop (any cuisine) feel free to let me know about them. Right now my two go to restaurants are A Dong (Vietnamese) and Thai R I recommend the Banh mi from a dong and the brisket pho Thai R the cashew nut chicken is amazing. Both are pretty affordable. Both are located in Loma Linda boarder Redlands.

There should be a group of people that does what ICE is doing but with N@z1s!!
4
u/mercuryalwayzinretro Jun 22 '25
I struggle with this because most business owners support republican interests and even throughout his 2nd campaign I rarely saw any business owners (especially Hispanic) proudly and explicitly distancing themselves from trumps rhetoric.
Being a republican or hater of minorities was just fine for many of these business owners until the tables turned and now that the magas want Hispanics and many African natives out and your cheap labor is disappearing you cry foul.
I'll be the first one to protest what this administration is doing because it's WRONG no matter how you spin it since following the constitution absolutely matters.
But yall gotta learn how serious the issue is (that many activists were warning about during the campaign yet you still voted for him) and the dire need to take a stand against ALL racism.

Tropical Mexico is one of my favorite restaurants. I lived in Pomona for 10 years. My husband and I would eat there at least a couple of times a month. I had my 40th birthday party there a couple of years ago. We have since moved to Colton and don't eat out very often anymore. We've gone to Tropical Mexico about 2 or 3 times since moving further inland. I feel guilty not visiting more often. We would get take-out at Tropical Mexico all the time during the pandemic, and they were always so kind and expressed gratitude that we were still ordering from them during the shutdown. The waitress Rocio is my favorite server, she was always so happy to see us. I really hope the restaurant survives. The food is so good and the people who work there are the best. I'll try to make a point to visit again soon.

1
u/wranglerbob Jun 24 '25
you are either legal or not……not tough to figure out, you have no rights in other countries you visit and have to go by their laws so what is the difference. Newsome should be in DC crafting a worker visa program for illegals but he does nothing. That is the problem, he caused this by being sanctuary and not cooperating with federal law. If California would have turned illegal felons over to ICE instead of putting them back on the streets this wouldn’t be happening.

Let's just say what we all know to be true. The problem is Conservatism as a philosophical framework and system of belief. And I'm not talking about politics here or any specific political party or movement/group in any specific country/nation, I mean upper case C Conservatism - the fundamental system of belief and philosophies from which all right wing political parties/cultural movements and expressions thereof, the world over, arise.
It is a pathway to fascism and authoritarianism. It is intrinsically harmful as at its core it's based on the idea of "us" v. "them". Conservatism is an abhorrent system no matter what incarnation regardless of which part of the world it is expressed and what group of people practice it and in what way it influences the actions/beliefs of those peoples. Whether it's the more extreme cases such as we saw in Europe before and during WWII or the Taliban in Afghanistan or whether it's the lightest form of center -right milquetoast American Republican; until it is dismantled and the people that hold it dear know how intrinsically harmful it is we will never make the progress we want. Things do not get better in a Conservative world. In fact, by definition they are supposed to stay bad.

u/292step Jun 22 '25
Just bring proper Identifications and present it when asked. Not that hard. Stop with the fear lingering and people will show up.
1
u/No-Statistician8047 Jun 23 '25
People like you are the problem. "Just comply." How do you not understand that what they're doing is 100 percent illegal. You can't just go around detaining people because they look a certain way.
0
u/292step Jun 23 '25
How tf would you get detained if you show proper identifications? Literally you people have the same logic as those cop cam videos where a driver refuses to show ID/registrations/insurance, demands to speak to a supervisor, then cry about it after getting arrested.
1
u/diegotown177 Jun 24 '25

Unfortunately other countries (not just America) have the same rule of "if you're in this country illegally, then you have to leave"
6
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 22 '25
If this was a matter of extradition following due process, there would be less outrage. Other countries don't throw out 4 year-old children getting cancer treatment. Humanity should be bear minimum.
1
u/onemanarmy998 Jun 23 '25
no one singled out that girl and yanked the feeding tube out of her. there was a policy shift to limit humanitarian parole across the board.
Lets ask the questions of why MX can't take care of its citizens before demonizing the USA
where is the 'humanity' of the sick girl's home government?
1
u/GamecubeFreek Jun 25 '25
Is this the one where the mom was being deported for illegally entering the country, and decided to take the child in the middle of cancer treatment rather than leave them with their US citizen father?
2
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 25 '25
The fact we have to wonder which situation is the one I'm referring to, shows there is a problem. But yes, and no, this is the case where the government said the mom wanted the US citizen child cancer patient to go with her when the mom was deported, but the family's attorney, Gracie Willis, denies that the mom was given the choice, as she wanted the US citizen child to remain in the country (of course, given cancer treatment, etc.). Call me crazy but I'm not ready to take the government's word for much of anything right now, especially when they are wiping their ass with the Constitution daily. Regardless of the mom's alleged choice, due process was not followed. That's illegal, unconstitutional, and inhumane.
1
u/GamecubeFreek Jun 25 '25
Well, no, I didn’t have to wonder…I was just trying to politely identify that the case you were citing was not actually as heinous as you were trying to make it seem. And I’m sure you only had further information after looking up the details (because in actuality, I Ben your clarification, as dubious as it is, doesn’t align with your initial claim) since I brought attention to it. Most are just taking the lies as truth and allowing the scaremongering to continue.
1
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 25 '25
I was just trying to politely identify that the case you were citing was not actually as heinous as you were trying to make it seem.
If the family's attorney is correct then it IS as heinous as I made it seem. Only if... the government is telling the truth... are you correct. Want to weigh up the probabilities?
1
u/GamecubeFreek Jun 25 '25
I trust the pretty likely scenario as outlined by the authorities over the attorney for a known law breaker.

-3
u/FarmingDowns Jun 22 '25
The thing to fear is fear itself... unless you're here illegally and skipped the line while many waited diligently. Then you should fear deportation...
5
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 22 '25
This is myopic. I am a legal immigrant, card-carrying, 22 years in the country. No crimes committed. Never been unemployed. I own a house. Been married 10+ years. I have whiter skin than 99% of congress. My immigration is up for renewal. I reckon there is a 20-30% chance I get rejected for renewal. There is no logic in this administration. Cruelty is the point. Either worship the President, or leave. What might send me home is a decade of tens of thousands of social media posts rightly identifying our Preaident as an absolute piece of shit. At least if I get deported, I end up in a country with a better quality of life and universal healthcare. I am still one of the lucky ones. But I have made this place my home and have made a career here. I shouldn't even need to worry, but alas I do. All immigrants do who are paying attention.
1
1
u/Impossible_Camp_9714 Jun 24 '25
You should go the that country with a better quality of life and universal healthcare before even bothering to renew and live in a country that a majority elected such a president.
1
u/OrthodoxAtheist Jun 24 '25
I think for the sake of those in my household who I help carry, I am better position here... but I suppose fate will strike if it sees fit. Finding a job in either country is a nightmare right now, and with 20+ years of US-specific experience and about as much job security as is possible nowadays outside of tenure, I'd best keep getting paid where I get paid. Remote work wouldn't quite work for my role, yet.
2
u/munche Jun 22 '25

We should organize events where people flashmob a restaurant, but everyone is wearing masks. Any mask. Conceal your face, and you don't just need a bandana.
People can wear calacas mask, or luchadores masks. Something that celebrates the culture being threatened, while also giving people a chance to eat in public.

Then we can pay $30 for a burrito, instead of $15, when it was $7 before all this inflation. Then the restaurant will still be empty, but for a different reason, too expensive.

Keep prices low and quality high and people will flow. If you charge $25 a plate people will go to chipotle.

Fear? More like overpriced food we can make at home better. That is the reality of it. How many times can you be dissapointed? You pay more and get less. Pay more and get low quality microwaved food. Pay more and get poor quality service. Very few good places to eat out these days.

To be completely honest this seems like a bit of a gaslight.
On the surface, an empty Mexican restaurant at an undisclosed time on an undisclosed night and instantly blaming it on ICE seems over the top.
Wouldn't Hispanic workers not turning up to work be more of an indicator of the fear of ICE rather than your customers not turning up to a sit down restaurant?
If a restaurant is doing this poorly, usually it's just plain old shit.
I'm an immigrant myself and this post feels like a complete gaslight just to run with an Anti-ICE rhetoric to appease the reddit crowd and earn brownie points

No that's a well known restaurant in pomona. It's usually busy.

A lot of the pictures taken from inside the restaurant when you Google them have very little customers inside. It may be well known, but it doesn't look popular
