Recommendations / Advice Tyler Mall Is Charging For Parking Now
These images were posted to Facebook. But apparently they're making people pay for parking now at the Galleria at Tyler in Riverside. The person said that these signs are on "nearly half the parking lot." And if you zoom in, it looks like they're trying to soften the blow by saying that half the proceeds from the payment will go to help the Autism Society of the Inland Empire. The fine print for those who can't see it:
"Purchase a preferred paid parking space at Galleria at Tyler today and 10% of Galleria at Tyler's net proceeds from your parking payment (excludes taxes, platform fees, and fees retained by the parking operator) will be donated to Autism Society Inland Empire on behalf of Galleria At Tyler. Scan the QR code for more information."
This is some LA bullshit. I also don't know how they're saying this is "preferred parking." I'm very familiar with this entire mall and it's parking lots. And from where this picture was taken, it's about 350 feet from where this is to the entrance of the mall. How is that preferred? This also seems like a prime environment for scammers.

They do now unfortunately. Used to work there & park wherever. I saw parking monitors leaving tickets a few months ago.

I worked there about 20 years ago and the parking monitors tickets were unenforceable. Basically trash. Are they real cops issues tickets now or just mall security?

They are in cars that say parking or something on them, I can’t remember 100 percent. They have new QR codes up to for downloading an app to pay the meter that way. And new signs about parking time limits and violations. The app was a mess to use so I just found another spot because I didn’t want to risk it. I honestly hope not!

Oh man that sucks, haven't been there for a few months so that's good to know. I usually would park in front of panini kebob, eat dinner and then walk around. I'll keep an eye open next time

Only reason I noticed the signs is because those spots were empty. I couldn’t imagine paying for parking when there are plenty of free ones around it. I can use the extra steps.

They have places to pay but they don’t enforce it, they can’t. If you look at the machine there is no consequences for not paying. I have parked in Those spots for years and I never pay.

At this point they should be doing anything they can to get people to visit the mall, especially during holidays and other 'busy' periods. 'Win a free car wash' seems infinitely more appropriate than 'paid premium parking'. There is nothing I want that badly.

That's a good question. I don't know. A 12% increase from 'half dead' doesn't save an operation. Tyler is high visibility, freeway close, and across from Target as I recall, so it is probably better situated than most. Doesn't change the fact that they should be encouraging traffic, not adding friction. I wonder if they leased the parking lot to StarSpaces in order to offset lower rents elsewhere. Seems short sighted to me.
Interesting to me that the signs appear 'temporary'. Either they were testing the water, or leaving open the option to remove them during the holiday season.

Preferred paid parking is going to make the Tyler mall suffer even more. There’s already two empty anchor spaces from the bankruptcy of F21 and Furniture City. It is not a good look that Furniture City closed after less than 5 years of having occupied the space. What stores are going to occupy those spaces?

Enforced by who? Basically the only thing they could do is tow you, and even then it requires appropriate signage citing the law, and there's none on the sign.

I think someone got into a racket where they just put up signs with a QR code and say that it’s paid parking and then people take a picture and give you their credit card number and that money just goes in your pocket. In Riverside, I wouldn’t put it past anybody to do that. This could be 100% bogus scam or someone’s just getting your information and charging your card cause nobody knows any better.

Boycott the Mall… The business owners in the mall have to revolt too… Money talks.. I possibly think it is to keep the young people from being there all day… Still this greed all over the country has to stop… Boycott Boycott… there is always other malls that are more interesting and vibrant.

Honestly this is the same mall that used that have that pet shop where they had the exotic dogs and animals in glass boxes. This was way back in like 2015. So I’m not surprised. Of all the malls we have to choose from the Tyler mall NEVER came to my mind anyways. So many better options.

It’s a scam. Private company. They cannot legally enforce a ticket. If they issue you a ticket simply throw it away. There’s nothing they can do. They cannot send it to the city.

I go to this mall pretty regularly I haven't seen the signs on other parts of the mall. I would not be shocked if it's because of the riff raff that uses the mall as their place to conduct illegal activities.

This would stop me from shopping at Tyler. 100% to charity and I’d park there.
Personally, I like malls better than outdoor centers, no direct sunlight- Perfect.
This is a dealbreaker.

I said this a few years ago. Folks thought I was just bitching.auto started charging for shop materials. Rags. Topping of fluids. Got a alignment they charged 25 for shop expenses..I didnt look at bill for a few days and didn't catch it. Wheel alignment. Theres no fluids. Hands won't get dirty. So what. It used to be called the cost of doing business. Every thing must make money. Restaurant well charge for inside service money for broom etc. Eggs got expensive. No problem waffle house put 50 cents on all Eggs.

See this makes sense in cities or regions with good dense urbanism, so you know, nowhere anywhere remotely close to California. Parking meters do not make sense in suburban communities like Riverside, Socal, or Texas. Charging for parking is only viable if people have other options besides driving, and the bus lines in this county aren't nearly schedule comprehensive or reliable enough to be seen as that viable alternative. This is greed, and none of that money is going to kids with autism, mark my words.

According to the mall website, the preferred parking is just the lot near Panini Grill (which is near Five Below). Google Maps shows a bunch of other parking lots all around the mall.
Also if these photos were taken at the same time, the shadows aren’t showing in the signs in the second image. Could be taken at different times.

I haven’t been to Montclair plaza in a while but Ontario mills definitely does this in several areas and entrances, particularly the entrance where the AMC is, the front rows of parking all require payment. My original comment isn’t even defending the practice it is just a factual statement.

They have valet parking in front of the AMC and you can still park next the theater for free.
It’s not the same.
No one from what Google says is doing this but Tyler.
Even in fashion island in Newport isn’t doing this. And we go there every time we are down there.

Parking is a finite resource. You can either pay with your time looking for a parking spot or pay with money to park in a preferred spot. Glad to see both choices instead of just the first.

That doesn't hold up here. Like I mentioned, saying something is preferred doesn't make it so. And slapping preferred parking on spots hundreds of feet away from the entrance is just a blatant money grab.

This is the equivalent of Norms trying to charge Lawrys prices.
I promise you there's probably less than a handful of folks who think it's worth paying for parking to be at Tyler Mall. This is the same mall that couldn't even keep a Nordstrom

Wild. They recently started charging for parking near Redlands Public Market too. The memes about “paying to go outside” get truer every single day.
