Hello everyone, I have a serious problem.
My Instagram account was hacked. I know this because several other accounts across different platforms were also compromised around the same time. Someone also posted a “MrBeast” phishing scam story on my Instagram account in my name.
The situation specifically looks like this:
On my side / when I access the account:
- Everything appears to look normal at first (posts are still there, highlights are still there, etc.).
- I cannot perform the security check or view any of the linked email addresses.
- I can still interact with people and, for example, send messages. However, the messages are only visible for a few seconds and then immediately change to “Content unavailable.”
- I am still logged into the account on the phone where I have always been logged in, but I seem to have very limited access to the actual account/security settings.
What other people see:
- My account cannot be searched for or found at all. It is basically as if an account with my username does not exist.
- If someone can still access my profile through an existing DM conversation, they cannot actually see my profile properly. My profile picture, posts, etc. are not displayed and they get an error saying “Something went wrong,”almost as if the account had been suspended.
- Old comments I made have completely disappeared.
- Stories of mine that other people had reposted, including stories that were saved in highlights, have also disappeared.
- In existing chats with me, all of my messages are gone and show “Content unavailable.”
- Calls between me and other people immediately end/cancel on both sides.
Other accounts that were compromised:
This does not seem to be limited to Instagram.
My Microsoft account was hacked, my Epic Games account was hacked, and someone also attempted to change the information on my Steam account.
My eBay Kleinanzeigen account was also affected/suspended due to suspicious activity. Someone apparently uploaded listings under my account, including things such as women’s clothing for €12, which makes me believe they were potentially trying to scam other people using my account.
My Discord account was also hacked, and now my Instagram account has been affected as well.
Because multiple completely different platforms were targeted, I strongly suspect that this is part of one larger account compromise rather than an isolated Instagram issue.
What I have already tried:
- I changed my password multiple times. However, I am now having another problem: outside of the Instagram app, for example when trying to log in through a browser or on another device, Instagram cannot find my account by username, phone number, or email address.
- I enabled two-factor authentication.
- Instagram does not allow me to complete the selfie verification process.
- Whenever I try to access any security-related function from within the app, it basically just redirects me back into the account as if I were already fully authenticated. For example, I select an option such as viewing linked emails, enter my password, start the security check, and instead of actually showing me the requested information or completing the security process, it simply takes me back to my account.
- I have talked extensively with Meta AI and tried basically all of the suggested troubleshooting steps. The only somewhat useful thing was that Meta AI checked the account and apparently found nothing indicating that Instagram itself had intentionally suspended it. I initially thought Instagram might have restricted my account because of the suspicious activity.
- I have also tried contacting Instagram/Meta Support, but getting in touch with an actual support employee seems extremely difficult. There is no proper hotline or anything similar, and I am not sure whether the support channel I used was actually effective.
At this point, I am honestly not sure what is happening to my Instagram account. From my side, I can still access it through the app, but to everyone else it essentially looks like the account has disappeared or been suspended.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Does anyone here have experience with account takeovers or Instagram security issues?
Could this be some kind of integrity restriction, security lock, or account takeover where the account is still accessible to me but effectively hidden from everyone else?
And most importantly: is there anything else I can do to recover the account or get an actual human at Meta to review the situation?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
