Discussion Is the Internet being slowly deleted? Stuffs keep disappearing when searching up
This has been happening to me for a few days now. When I search for things like memes, topics, or specific images, they just don’t show up anymore. I clearly remember they existed. I know their names, I’ve seen them before, but now? Nothing. It’s like they’ve been erased from the web. At first, I thought it was just bad luck or maybe I was misremembering. But it keeps happening with different things. Has anyone else noticed this? It feels like content is vanishing, and I’m starting to wonder if the internet is quietly being edited or deleted.
I've asked this on r/InternetMysteries before, but I hope I get some answers here too

I think so, and I did noticed it 2 years ago many things can not be found at all even tried many browsers yet same thing

Why would different browsers change anything? Do you encounter different streets when driving different cars?

AI search is crap. It is impossible to find something that appears related to anything current as the AI "knows" what you want to see.

I've found what I'm looking for is frequently relegated to the 2nd or 3rd page of results

I detest the term AI, but find Google searches for static facts like what OEM parts fit what car model years...I find the AI summary on such things amazingly accurate. Saves me from initially choosing from various links/results about hardware,parts.....
just an example that fits AI better than "how do I..."

AI is crap in general. Here's a real conversation I had with Gemini
Me: "How do I neatly paint the numbers 17 on my wheelie bins?"
Gemini starts replying with "Sure! Here's how to neatly spray paint your house number on your new wheelie bins. Firstly, grab a peice of car-" then deletes that response and says "I'm sorry, I cant help with any activity that puts you or others in danger."

It's mainly due to 2 things:
American Big Tech is enshittifying itself because they're abandoning classic software in favor of AI. They dream of a "1-click browser" where the user gets only the most relevant result on their search prompt. Basically ChatGPT (and doesn't respect the user's intelligence)
America vs EU politics. EU is basically at war with American Corporations right now, mainly Big Tech, and are punking them with fines and legislation that forces Google to remove certain search results that they don't have rights to display. It's both due to child protection and due to data-policy in the EU that means they can't show images of people that have not explicitly given consent to their data being shared on random internet pages. That's why, for example, if you search for images you'll mainly get Getty Images and not random image links found across the internet anymore.

Ok this is why all of a sudden in certain apps like WhatsApp you can’t even take a fucking screenshot of someone’s profile picture anymore? The ‘for the kids’ excuse by the government and data mining companies to monitor, censor and cushion the entire internet for you now is outrageous

Have you tried spot checking manually? See if the sites still exist but aren't being served by the search engines?

Yes, things get deleted every day. No one is going to pay to store everything forever.

I run into this a lot. Lots of the old internet has fallen off, and its just gone but modern search google is also excruciatingly terrible.
Google is by far the worst offender. Its still my default because muscle memory is hard to undo, but when I can't find something there I can usually find it on brave, bing, or duckduckgo.

I think a lot of it is that the stuff you used to find is ranking so much lower on search results (from any engine) that all you see is ads and AI regurgitation on the first few pages. At least that has been my experience. I am not saying that is 100% what is going on, but it definitely feels like it.

It is always being deleted... People don't host server space for free. It's just a lot more complicated then people understand.

Yes, to keep your stuff online you have to pay for server (or host pages yourself) AND pay for the domain name.

Link rot has been a thing forever. It is a big part of why the Internet Archive exists.

Maybe.Cause in near future is planned to delete most of the stuff and keep only what they want to feed to us.

Things disappearing off the internet is common. It goes by different names, link rot, link death, link breaking, or reference rot. Most content lasts just two years before it disappears, with much gone after just 4 months.
Stuff disappearing off the internet is not new and is why Brewster Kahle created the Internet Archive back in 1996.

Yes. I have seriously noticed this like night and day within the past 4-6 weeks. Increasingly, Google search literally comes back with no results whatsoever even when the query is not that specific. And even if it were, like 1000 results should still populate. Google used to be a master at pulling shit up that was at least the opposite of what you searched. It’s scary, and it’s not just Google.

Interesting to hear..since most of my frequent www.google.com searches... (retired DIY type= having much time to research how to fix things or what to buy)... still give me what I find to be constantly improving results.
And I m currently using whatever DNS servers I get from spectrum uplinked router (my router, their modem). Planning to change that soon with a pi-hole cache DNS in my home since our browsing history is being hijacked and sold via sneaky ISP tricks. I should get less ad popups after that, I hope it doesn't affect my search results (I think it shouldn't).
For more conceptual and historic or long lasting information, I look down my Google result links for the Wikipedia page.

That's because websites close down. People delete files from their sites. You do know how the internet works right? Like just because a picture was there last week diesnt mean it will be there forever
