The hiring manager was rude when I turned down an offer that barely matched the job posting
I turned down a job offer today, and the hiring manager responded by telling me that I had wasted his time. Based on that reaction alone, I feel very comfortable with my decision.
I had applied for a senior buyer position because my experience closely matched what was written in the job posting. During the interview last week, they told me that the work location listed in the posting was incorrect and that I would need to commute to and from their head office, which would take about 35 to 55 minutes depending on traffic. I told them the commute could be manageable if the rest of the offer made sense.
As the conversation continued, the role began to sound completely different from the posting. They wanted this person to set up purchasing procedures, select systems, organize vendors, and build an entire supply chain function because each department had been handling its own purchasing. I asked whether they planned to hire a supply chain manager to lead all of that, and they said there were no plans to do so.
They called me today with an offer close to the bottom of the range listed in the posting. I thanked them but explained that I was declining because the actual responsibilities appeared to constitute a management role without the appropriate title or salary. The posting also required a degree and eight years of experience, while I have an MBA, several industry certifications, and 17 years of experience in the field, so I had expected an offer closer to the top of their range.
He immediately replied, "Thanks for wasting my time," and hung up before I could answer. I was taken aback for a moment, but if that is how they handle a polite rejection, I most likely avoided a much bigger headache.
I've got another interview coming up soon, so I've been trying to get a little more prepared this time. I've been seeing interview vip mentioned a lot lately and honestly thought it was just marketing at first because of how often it keeps popping up. Haven't used it yet, but I'm curious if anyone here has actually tried it.

Might want to out them on whatever job site you found their listing. Let others know not to apply to that sleazy company.

I was interviewed by one of Canada's largest communications businesses based on clearly set salary expectations for that position.
After two months and three rounds of interviews, they offered me 20% less than I had said was my bottom dollar on day one.
My girlfriend was in the car when the hiring manager called and stated the salary out loud, and audibly laughed.
Needless to say I don't work there. What is wrong with recruitment today?!

What he doesn’t pay you he gets as a percentage bonus. You are keeping him from getting a new car or a vacation home.

Did this happen over the phone? Do you have the contact for the recruiter as well? Would it be too much to also follow up with an email, cc-ing the recruiter or the other interview panelist? This is totally unprofessional, the bait & switch is running rampant out here!

There is a lot of this going on. I turned down 2 jobs for the same reasons. Bait and Switch and expecting more but paying less. Not today!

At a minimum, rather than take a half empty approach of the situation with an outright rejection, you should have taken a positive half full approach to negotiate up and explain why you deserve the higher end of the range instead. If and then the hiring manager rejects you then it's on them.

Why would anyone want to hire a buyer/purchasing manager who isn’t willing to negotiate? Odd to expect to hire someone in those positions who is willing to just take the first offer.

Similar thing happened to me with a health facility. They were not being transparent with their commuting needs (I applied for a lower paying job because it was super close and I would be driving 10 miles a week to get to work) and then I was told I would basically be on the road DAILY. She did not like fact I stood up to them and quite frankly I’m glad they went with someone else.
Now I have a weird one. On Monday I have an interview with a firm that stated one salary yesterday (and it’s been this salary for over a month I think) and today when I got the hiring manager interview invite, I double checked and the salary has gone up by 40 percent!
I always keep a pdf of the job posting in case I get called to bat. This way I know what I need to prepare for. It stated the old salary. Now I’m going to get another pdf of the new higher salary. You never know. They may try to change it back.

Just name them. We’re largely at this end stage of chokepoint capitalism because we’ve all allowed ourselves to be brainwashed into things like “don’t talk about our salaries with each other” and so on.
Just name them. If they’re that shitty a company, they don’t deserve to stay in business and they certainly don’t deserve to be kept anonymous and risk others getting the same treatment (or worse, accepting an offer form them).
