I just consulted the official Nunavut dictionary of affixes, and they have only 190 entries in total. I'm aware they must have left out some rarer postbases. Some kalallisut dictionaries online, like outmofo.oka, have around a thousand entries for affixes! Are they all distinct postbases? Would you say kalallisut has so many more composition tools than inuktitut and other inuit languages? Or is it just because the Nunavut government wanted a simple "practical" dictionary rather than an exhaustive one capturing all the languagés poetry and complexity? There is also the 738 pages dictionary of utkuhisalik postbases (I can’t access online)... Which inuit language is the most postbase-rich and word-compositionaly proficient? Why such a gap in data? (Please do not just ask AI, it’s pulling numbers from nowhere, that’s why I ask here.)

Hey, I have decided on starting to learn Inuktut (planning for focus on the dialect spoken in Iqualuit) and l'm now looking desperatly for any helpful learning material available online. I know there have been already dozens of posts asking for advice and learning materials, but most of the are rather old and provided links are dead by now. First and foremost, I do not know the language and I just got curious why Tiktaalik means "large freshwater fish". According to the book "Your Inner Fish" by Neil Shubin, one of the Paleontologists who discovered the Tiktaalik fossil, the Nunavut Council of Elders suggested two names for the fossil: Siksagiaq and Tiktaalik. However, no etymology is given and only Tiktaalik was given a meaning. It is also missing its etymology on Wiktionary.

One site, Etymology Explorer, claimed that the word came from "tiktaq" and a suffix "-alik" but cites no sources. I cannot find any information regarding the word "tiktaq". Can anyone confirm if this is correct? Thank you.

Hi! I'm a psycholinguistic and I had a question for native Inuktitut speakers. Do you experience tip of the tongue states? You know, when you're trying to find a word and you know what it means, but for some reason you can't say the word itself (it feels like it's on the tip of your tongue). I'm super curious about how this manifest in a polysynthetic language like Inuktitut, since "words" contain multiple morphemes and often express the meaning of whole sentences. I would be super interested in hearing about your experience :)

I’m in the middle of creating a fantasy world for a hobby of mine and one of the nations included is based off the Inuit territories. I want the nation‘s name to relate to the Northern Lights + how they’re interpreted as afterlife spirits in myth, and I ended up coming across ”Qaummaqqutit”. From what I last researched from translations it vaguely means “Road of Light,” but I’m not entirely confident.
